What is a satellite Why Satellite Communication Satellite vs terrestrial and others Choosing Communication Platform
2
Satelit is man made object launched into space orbiting the earth
Arthur Clarke’s vision of satellite , 120 degree apart, circling the earth as global communication medium (1945)
Relay in Space
First Russian satellite Sputnik 1 launched in 4 Oct 1957
• Communication satellite is a Relay in Space
First American satellite Explorer1 (31 Jan 1958)
A satellite communications system is an efficient way to link multiple communication sites together within a large area of coverage.
It consists of two segments :– Ground Segment (terminal, earth station)
Responsible for delivering user communications to the space segment
All satellite terminals within the coverage can communicate
– Space Segment ( satellite ) The communication satellite is a
microwave repeater in the sky Transponder receives signals at a
given frequency (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits them at corresponding frequency (downlink)
Indonesia is early adopter of satellite communication (Palapa A - 1976)
Indonesia has adopted an ‘Open Sky’ Policy since early years
Foreign satellite can serve Indonesian market – Landing Right requires Reciprocity– Coordinated satellite – No interference to other
Indonesian telecommunication systems6

Indonesian Satellites have enjoyed spectrum priority over terrestrial– Ext-C Band vs Broadband WiMAX– S-Band vs Broadband WiMAX and LTE
Satellite is viewed as Strategic for Indonesia’s archipelago– Broadband is better via fiber but takes time and
resources to link 13,997 island

Point to Point
Microwave Radio Trunking WiMAX WiFi Fiber Optic Wired (copper, coax) Satellite
Point to Multipoint
WiMAX Radio Trunking UMTS LTE WiFi Satellite
10Which one is best ?
Wireless vs wired
All wireless requires specrum allocation
Spectrum is limited resource
Time to deploy Life time of service Geographical terrain
– Indoor vs outdoor
Voice, Video or Data transmission
Satellite vs Fiber Optic
Satellite is best for broadcast/multicast / 1way
Wide coverage Expensive to launch
11
FO is getting cheaper to lay
Best for throughput Point to point only
12
WiMAX vs LTE
Similar technology but different in origins
Still requires spectrum Eccosystem is important Time to market
WiFi vs 3G
Licensed vs Unlicensed Indoor vs outdoor Widely available /
inexpensive Non QOS IEE802.11 to IEE802.22 CDMA, GSM & all 3GPP
are all voice derived technology
Super WiFi13
Regulation (license, standard , TKDN) Product availabillity (market mass scale) Innovation & new technology
– Hybrid Fiber + Coax or FTTH– Satellite + 3G– Pico Cell
Budget
