Growing pains lead to tripled operational efficiency, optimized warehouseKDC accelerates growth with wire-guided Swing Reach Trucks, very narrow aisle warehouse layoutDel Williams
When a manufacturer goes from production start-up to nearly outgrowing a 60,000 sq. ft. addition in a few years – then optimizes its new warehouse, tripling operational efficiency – the growing pains are worth it.
That is what The Knowlton Development Corporation (KDC), a Tier-1 contract manufacturer and custom formulator for the North American consumer goods industry, has achieved at its Columbus, Ohio facility.
“We’ve grown much more than we anticipated,” says Todd Lowe, KDC’s Senior Director of Operations, noting the facility now produces about 300 million units a year including 1.5 million units a day during peak season.
KDC’s original 90,000 sq. ft. warehouse, which is used for incoming components, finished goods and label storage, has used a variety of forklifts and racking systems including double deep rack. However, this setup was soon pushed to capacity.
Growing pains“Keeping up with the growth of our facility was challenging,” says
Lowe. “With the double deep rack, we often had to unload two pallets just to get one, which was inefficient.”
A similar setup, it was determined, would not meet the manufactur-er’s growth needs in its planned 60,000 sq. ft. addition, half of which would be used for production and half for storage.
“We needed to fit 4,000 pallet positions in 30,000 sq. ft. of ware-house space, but could only fit about 2,500 pallet positions using typical double deep, deep reach storage with 9' aisles,” says Lowe. “We didn’t know how to achieve our required capacity.”
The contract manufacturer turned to Raymond Storage Concepts, a material handling solutions integrator and official dealer of Raymond lift trucks in Ohio, Kentucky, Southeast Indiana and West Virginia.
After a thorough engineering review that included seven different layout options – including standard selective, drive-in, pallet flow, pushback rack, double-deep narrow aisle rack, and very narrow aisle layout – KDC made their choice.
Accelerating growthKDC chose the very narrow aisle layout, Raymond Swing Reach
Trucks, and single deep selective rack from Steel King Industries, a leading material handling and storage rack manufacturer.
“To achieve required storage capacity, full selectivity and improve picking efficiency, the solution was to narrow the warehouse aisles to 6-feet, use Raymond Swing Reach Trucks, and Steel King SK2000 pallet rack,” says Mike Hoelzle, a Raymond Storage Concepts Systems Sales Engineer involved with the project.
The Swing Reach Trucks allow the operator to pick or put pallets away to either side of the warehouse aisle as the operator rides up and down in a turret with the pallet load. The SK2000 pallet rack is a bolt-less, closed tubular upright product.
According to Hoelzle, the warehouse aisles can be narrowed to 6-feet because the Swing Reach Trucks follow a wire-guided system that maximizes storage capacity and operational efficiency.
To accomplish this, a ¼" x ¼" groove was cut in the concrete floor
aisles, a guide wire placed in the groove and covered with epoxy until flush with the floor, and the wire hooked to a power source. The electric current passing through the wire emits a magnetic field that the Swing Reach Trucks track on.
“With the wire-guided system, operators no longer have to wor-ry about steering and centering the Swing Reach Trucks,” explains Hoelzle. “Operators can focus on speed, travel direction and lift. The lift allows pallet placement and picking from either side of the aisle and full selectivity, which allows them to run at peak efficiency.”
According to Hoelzle, the Steel King pallet rack was chosen for a number of reasons.
“Perhaps the main reason we recommended the closed back tubular SK2000 rack design is that it is a nice hybrid between higher cost impact resistant structural steel and lower cost roll formed steel,” says Hoelzle. “It’s more economical than structural steel, provides the load capacities we need, and is more durable than open backed rack.”
Compared to open back roll formed columns, the closed tubular uprights are 44 times more torsion/twist resistant, with 250% greater frontal impact resistance and 68% greater side impact resistance. All beams are constructed of high-strength (55,000 p.s.i. minimum) steel, and holes are placed on the column's face, not the corners, minimizing strength loss.
“Customers also like the closed tube rack for its cleanliness,” adds Hoelzle. “They do not have to worry about any dust or debris that has accumulated on the floor getting inside the open end of the tube.”
According to Hoelzle, the boltless design of the rack helped with quick installation within the required timeframe.
Game changing efficiencyThe end result of the new warehouse layout has been “game chang-
ing efficiency,” according to Lowe.“With the very narrow aisle layout, wire guided Swing Reach Trucks,
and Steel King closed tubular selective rack, we can not only store the 4,000 pallets we need, but also pick and put away the pallets three times more efficiently,” says Lowe.
KDC’s improved efficiency is proving itself in hard numbers.“Before shipping 750 pallets in a day was the best we had ever
done,” says Lowe. “Recently we shipped 1,200 pallets in a day – about 37 truck loads of product – with the same workforce.”
Lowe says that the improved operational efficiency is allowing his existing operators to take on more tasks.
“What used to take two people is now done by one because of the increased efficiency,” adds Lowe. “Our Swing Reach Truck operators not only help with product shipping, but also take finished good prod-ucts from the production floor and put them away.”
Previously, a complete warehouse physical inventory required five days with operators going up and down the aisles in scissor lifts. With the new system, KDC recently finished a complete inventory in three days, according to Lowe.
“For any volume manufacturer who wants to optimize workflow, I think KDC in collaboration with Raymond Storage Concepts and Steel King may have created a best practice warehouse operation,” concludes Lowe.

Become the Exception
72 shots – three goalsMike Marchev
Like hockey or not, today’s message serves as a great reminder for all of us.
Last season the Washington Capitols and The NY Rangers faced off for game seven in the semi-finals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was all on the line. The winner moved onto the finals, while the loser went home to catch up on some TV reruns.
I tuned in with 17 minutes left in the 3rd period with the score tied one apiece. I heard the announcer say, “61 shots. Two in.” Those numbers immediately caught my attention.
The Rangers where a sure loser as they were down three to one in the loss column going into the night’s game. The smart money was on the Caps.
When the game came to a conclusion in overtime, the shot on goal count rose to 72 with just three goals scored. The Rangers overcame a two game deficit and were moving on.
It took 72 attempts to successfully achieve three positive outputs. Sound familiar? Probably not, since most of you reading this article give up or quit long before that many attempts are registered with little to show for them.
I am not sure what your sales statistics look like, but I bet that you are not taking enough shots… not meeting enough prospects… not thanking enough people.
To win in any game today requires a great deal of focus, effort, and persistence. You can also toss in the concept of “tenacity.”
My sage advice to you today: Keep on skating. Keep on shooting. Take the luck when you can and expect to score sooner or later.

Business Profile
Dorner celebrates 50 years of conveyor excellenceWhat started out as a little tool and die shop has evolved to
become an industry powerhouse in the design and building of low profile conveyor platforms…and 50 years later Dorner Mfg. is still going strong!
Dorner, this year, commemorates its 50th anniversary in business. Although the brand has become a household name within numerous industries, the company originally founded by brothers Wolfgang and Horst Dorner looked very different back then.
The Dorners first opened their doors for business on Jan. 14, 1966, as a tool and die shop. Their reputation for quality and respon-siveness was born out of their philosophy: catering to the customers, which meant building a high quality precision product, making sure customers were satisfied, providing responsive service – followed by a belief that in return customers would reward them with their business.
The transition to conveyors in the early 1970s happened out of necessity. The Dorners were looking for a conveyor to efficiently remove scrap and parts from under their dies; however they couldn’t find one that fit in such a tight space. Manufacturers they spoke with said conveyors could not be built that small because a bearing of that size would not be durable, and belts would not wrap around such tiny diameter rollers. The Dorners would see about that, and set out to prove them wrong.
Shortly thereafter, they developed and patented a new radial thrust bearing and worked with belting companies to obtain a flexible,
durable belt, and in 1973, the 4100 Series industrial conveyor was born. Word of this con-veyor began to spread, and within a few years conveyor sales were greater than the tool and die business, which was then phased out of production. From that point forward, the brothers focused on conveyors…and the company hasn’t looked back since.
“Our philosophy today mirrors that of the one set forth by the Dorners 50 years ago – a philosophy based on being responsive to our customers,” said Terry Schadeberg, President & CEO, Dorner Mfg. “Carrying the torch forward and continuing to live up to the ideals established by the Dorners is something every employee embraces. We’re very excited for what the next 50 years holds for Dorner.”
While the company has enjoyed many noteworthy accomplish-ments through the years, the past year has been marked by several major milestones:
• Opening its first office in Canada to better serve the Canadi-an market
• Acquiring FlexMove, a Malaysian-based manufacturer of flexible chain conveyors for food, beverage, automotive, electronic and other industries
• Adding staff aimed at establishing brand recognition and growing sales to international markets
• Expanding its Hartland, Wisconsin, headquarters by adding a 25,000 square-foot expansion to its manufacturing area to meet future production goals and anticipated growth
• Major expansions to many of its conveyors, including its AquaPruf sanitary, SmartFlex and 2200 Series platforms
Dorner is observing its 50th anniversary with an open house and other celebratory events in June. www.dornerconveyors.com/50

Creamer's CornerWalk – behind scrubber 101Mike Creamer
For those of you planning to purchase, operate or just want to learn more about a walk-behind scrubber, this article may be up your alley.
First of all, there are many, many manufacturers of wb scrubbers. Some of them are well known names as Tennant, Clarke, Nilfisk-Ad-vance and Minuteman to name a few. Some are NOT as well known, however this should not be a reflection of the quality of the equip-ment. Karcher is one such example. Even though this company is glob-al, many people from my experience have not heard of them. Viper, Pullman-Holt and Betco are other less known, but I encourage you to do your “due-diligence” when buying a new piece of equipment.
So let’s talk about the major components which make up a wb scrubber. In order to be a legitimate wb scrubber they must have the following. 1. Solution and recovery tank. 2. A vacuum motor. 3. Scrub deck or sometimes referred to as a brush deck. 4. Drive tires. 5. Solution control valve. 6. Squeegee assembly. 7. Battery pak. 8. Self-charging system. 9. Operator control handle. So let’s discuss these more in detail.1. Solution and recovery tank. These tanks are a must for a scrubber.
The solution tank is also known as the clean water tank. One can fill this tank with a combination of liquid detergent, pre-mixed detergent or just plain water. There are plenty of examples for any one of these combinations and there is nothing wrong with experimenting to see what works best for a particular application. The recovery tank fits its description very well. This is a tank that recovers the clean dirty water or solution that was used to clean the surface.
2. Vacuum motor. The vacuum motor provides the suction power to suck the dirty water from the floor to the recovery tank. Certainly, a must have for a scrubber.
3. Scrub deck or brush deck. This compartment is where the scrub brushes are contained. There are two styles of brush: disc brush, aka rotary brush and the second are cylindrical brush, aka tube brush. They both meet their particular purposes and I would sug-gest to do your homework on this point of what to choose.
4. Drive tires. Of course every mobile piece of equipment has to have tires. I noted this item because my suggestion is always two points. Use non-marking tires on your wb scrubber and have your tires foam-filled. You would not imagine the countless hours saved by not having to repair flat tires.
5. Solution control valve. This valve controls the amount of deter-gent/water released to the surface of the floor. For dirtier floors you put it down heavy and floors needing less detergent you can put less.
6. Squeegee assembly. Well, what can I say. Your scrubber must be equipped with one of these. However one point I want to make here is some scrubber manufacturers offer one of two types. A squeegee assembly that is curved/convex and a squeegee assembly that is straight. Go with the curved squeegee as it contains the dirty water better as it is vacuumed into the recovery tank.
7. Battery pack. Every wb scrubber has to be equipped with batteries. Typically they have six 6-volt when combined make the machine a 36-volt unit. Traction motors, scrub brush motors and scrub deck actuators are among some of the electrical units that must be powered.
8. Self-charging system. Many also know this system as an on-board charger. Just plug into an ordinary 110V outlet. Some required 220V. The other style would be to have a battery charger separate from the machine. You have to plug this into an electrical outlet and then plug your machine into this charger. One problem with this set-up is that if you are operating the machine on the other side of your facility and batteries have a low charge you have to make it back to your maintenance department before your batteries die. With a built-in charger, no worries. You can charge anywhere there is an 110V outlet in the building.
9. Operator control handle. This control allows the operator forward and reverse movement. I remember the day, way back when, some manufacturers didn’t offer reverse so one had to be very mindful of their surroundings.
Even though I covered much information, there are still some items I didn’t mention. One would be the recycling systems. This system is simply the recycling of detergent/water back onto the surface. This system does have its applications and limits.
In closing, the wb scrubber can be your friend. Finding the right combination of performances for your machine takes time and pa-tience. There are some very good scrubbers offered and some not so much. Do your homework and I hope you take away a better sense of the walk-behind scrubber.
Thanks for reading.

The meaning of lifeDetermining lifespan for “lubed for Life” bearings. Hint: at best, it's the L10 lifeIan A. Rubin, Director of Marketing, Regal Power Transmission Solutions
End users and OEMs frequently specify "lubed for life" mounted bearings, thinking the lubed-for-life bearings will deliver the same life – without lubrication – as bearings that currently require peri-odic lubrication. The truth is it depends on many factors, and only a detailed review of the application and testing will provide a more accurate answer.
As a bearing manufacturer, we are often asked why we cannot give a definitive answer. We would love to provide one, but it depends on many variables, even when application data is available.
Bearing manufacturers often provide "lubed for life" mounted bear-ings with a plug in the housing in place of a grease fitting, and some may add extra grease. In addition, you may see a tapered land design that helps direct lubrication back into the raceway. Then consider certain retainer designs can help a bearing run cooler. Even with these features and a very good seal, the most accurate answer to the question about bearing life still requires a detailed application review and test-ing. So, before you pull all of your bearing lubrication fittings and plug the holes, you need to understand why this is a gray area.
First, let's clear up any misunderstanding that "life" means infinite life. Under correct application conditions, properly installed and prop-erly maintained, your mounted bearing's life is limited to its L10 life or rating life calculated using industry standards.
What is L10? The L10 life is the number of revolutions or hours that 90 percent of a group of apparently identical bearings will complete or exceed before fatigue is expected to occur. In other words, 10 percent of the group is not expected to achieve the L10 life. The rating life can be calculated in terms of millions of revolutions or hours by using the bearing Basic Dynamic Rating (BDR). BDR is a calculated value, based on the bearing’s geometry, and represents the constant load which 90% of a group of apparently identical bearings can endure for a rating life of 1 million revolutions (33 1/3 rpm for 500 hours).
The basic load rating is a reference value only, to be used for selection of an adequately sized bearing to provide the desired L10 life in a given application. The L10 rating standard was originally established by the ABMA - American Bearing Manufacturers Association. Based on years of analysis very few bearings actually fail because of "fatigue." The cause is usually another factor, such as lubricant failure or contamination.
Grease is the wordPrecise answers for bearing life are challenging because L10 life is
based on ideal conditions, while real applications seldom duplicate those conditions precisely. A critical element in bearing life is the condition of the grease in the bearing. When the grease fails or gets expelled or contaminated with water, chemicals or foreign matter, bearing failure follows.
Grease is made up of 80 to 90 percent oil and the balance a thick-ener (often referred to as "soap") and additives. The oil provides the protective film between the rolling elements and raceway surface. The bearing will run smoothly until the grease breaks down. As the lubricating film between the rolling elements and raceway degrades, metal-on-metal contact begins.
Grease is affected by application conditions and the environment. Application factors that affect grease life are load, speed, and ambient and operating temperatures. Heavier loads and higher speeds in-
crease bearing internal temperatures, hastening lubricant breakdown. Likewise, two identical bearings under the same loads and speeds will have vastly different grease lifespans when one is in a climate controlled facility, while another is positioned near a 500°F (260°C) oven. A good rule of thumb is that for every 18°F (10°C) of temperature rise, the grease maintenance cycle should double in frequency.
Environment often plays a bigger role in grease life. Is the environ-ment wet, dry, or gritty? Is the equipment washed down – how? What chemicals or cleaners is the bearing exposed to? Is the bearing housing protected from water blasts or foreign material ingress? Does the bear-ing have appropriate seals?
There are many types of protection for mounted bearings, including protective end caps and backside seals. No single style or seal design is perfect for all applications. Some seals last 10 times longer than others in lab testing, but better sealing typically increases drag and frictional torque, which can be undesirable in some applications. The best seal for a given environment may not always be the best for the applica-tion. And even the best seals can be penetrated by overzealous cleaning crews with high-pressure spray equipment.
Even bearings in a parcel distribution center can be contaminated by particles of paper or packaging material dust, and certainly gritty dusts in a wood processing plant, quarry, or grain handling operation require excellent seals – and re-lubrication, if possible.
L10 adjusted and improvedThe ABMA provides a means to modify the L10 rating with "adjust-
ment" factors, known as a1, a2, a3 that are applied to the standard L10 value in order to determine an adjusted rating life (Lna). The a1 factor accounts for fatigue life based on reliability other than 90 percent. The a2 factor accounts for the bearing material. For example, standard bearing quality steel sets a baseline factor of 1.0.
The a3 factor adjusts for operating conditions, such as lubricant quality, presence of foreign matter, conditions that cause changes in material properties, unusual loading or mounting conditions. Mount-ed bearings are typically slip fitted to the shaft and rely on features such as inner race length and the locking device for support. ABMA recommends an a3 factor of 0.456 for "slip fit" ball bearings. Shock and vibration can act as an additional load over and above the expected applied load, also requiring an a3 life adjustment. Accurate determina-tion of the a3 factor often requires testing and in-field experience.
Protecting and replacing greaseIn any given application running side by side, a properly re-lu-
bricated bearing will always outlast a sealed "lubed for life" bearing. Re-lubrication provides fresh grease to the raceway and pushes old or contaminated grease away from the raceway. "Proper" lubrication means to avoid over lubricating and make sure the grease fitting and gun nozzle are cleaned before use.
Re-lubrication may not always be practical. It can be costly and may introduce more problems than no lubrication. But when specifying a "lubed for life" bearing, make sure you understand how your environment and application will affect grease life, because "life" never means forever.

New product keeps forklift operators cool
With yet another scorching sum-mer upon us, it’s imperative that both employers and employees are aware and prepared for the dangers of heat stress. Workers exposed to extreme heat (both indoor and outdoor) may be at risk for heat stroke. Forklift operators are especially at risk, since they often perform long shifts in these conditions. Keytroller, a de-signer, manufacturer and supplier of
electronic safety and weighing devices, has unveiled two products to combat this serious issue: Th e COOLTROLLER Dual Fan Cooling Forklift Seat Cushion and COOLTROLLER Double Headed Opera-tor Cooling Fans. www.keytroller.com
Improve worker safety with CartMover™
With compact, battery-powered CartMover™, in addition to increas-ing productivity you can ensure worker safety whenever heavy loads on wheels need to be moved. Th is material handler is ideal for moving just about anything on casters or wheels, weighing 100 lbs to 20,000 lbs. Whether it’s mobile carts with
heavy castings or metal parts, supply carts, or multi-cart trains, the CartMover™ keeps production rolling along without the need for spe-cial tow trucks or moving machinery. No more safety concerns with fast moving fork trucks as the CartMover™ replaces them. www.appletonmfg.com
Rite-Hite LED CountDown® provides timely safety
Th e new LED Countdown light commu-nication system from Rite-Hite uses LED lights to let workers know how much time there is before a high-speed door closes. Sometimes a few seconds can mean the diff erence between a serious accident and effi cient operations. Now standard with all Rite-Hite FasTrax High-Speed Doors, the LED Countdown works in conjunction
with the door’s internal timers. When the door is approached, an up arrow will signal that the door is opening. A white box will appear when the door is in a fully open position. Once the forklift or per-sonnel exit the door’s threshold, a timer will count down. www.ritehite.com

Camso makes skid steers all season ready
Camso, formerly Camoplast Solideal, engi-neers over-the-tire rubber tracks (OTT HXD) to give conventional skid steers the extra mo-bility to do more jobs in more places. With an ever-growing range of attachments, skid steer owners always have the right tool for the job. But many owners overlook one of the most useful of skid steer attachments: one that gives tough traction to the ground and superior floatation when needed it most. “The Camso OTT HXD tracks improve a loader’s flotation
by five times over the same machine running on its usual pneumatic tires,”says Mike Dembe, Market Development Manager, at Camso. www.camso.co

SAFETY CORNERBecoming a forklift operator can be harder than you might imagineBrian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems
Most types of serious vehicles have a fairly lengthy training process to become qualified and there are usually hundreds of training schools clamoring for the business. If you want to learn to operate a forklift, and you are not currently employed at a company that will train you internally or pay for your training, then good luck finding training at all.
Typical time frames to achieve proficiency and be ready to function at reasonable levels: (approx. timeframes)
• CDL – Commercial Drivers License for semi trucks = 15 days• Single Engine Private Pilot License = 60 days• Heavy Equipment (including dozer, scraper, etc.) = 90 days• Powered Industrial Truck?
The U.S. has a serious problem; one that is likely causing more deaths, injuries and damage than need to occur. We get calls every week from individuals who have never driven a forklift and who want to get a job driving one. Forklift jobs typically pay several dollars per hour more, which adds up to thousands of dollars over a typical year. For someone that is just “getting by,” a few thousand more can
make a huge difference in their lives and in the lives of their families. You might ask, “What’s the problem,” send them down to the local forklift dealer for “the generic class.”
OSHA now requires training to be site and lift specific; which means a trainer needs to know what they will be operating, under what type of conditions, etc. If they don’t know these factors and can’t test them on the exact lift, or at least the same type, then provid-ing training to that person is impractical because it may not be what they really need. For someone that has never driven a forklift, taking a class of a few hours and then spending 5-10 minutes of hands on time creates a problem. If the person worked for a company that had forklifts, then their company could provide them “practice operation” and get them up to speed; which is permissible according to the OSHA standard. Those without a company, or working at a compa-ny that will not spend the time to work with them, don’t have the practice operation luxury; they must try and “buy” their training and hands on experience. Potential employers, many of which don’t know what is required for training, accept just about any card a person can produce, which is also a problem.
You can log onto the internet today and obtain a permit to drive a forklift in a fairly short amount of time, maybe without even com-pleting the hands on portion. How valuable is this type of training and the card you get with it? It has little or no value, but it provides a piece of paper which potential employers are looking for and may get a person a job they are not qualified to perform, which puts everyone in danger. Where people and companies are missing the mark is that the paper means nothing without the skills and experience to back it up. It is better to have significant experience and no card to prove it, than have a current card and nothing to back it up, since sooner or later you must prove your skills on the forklift.
There are tons of forklift training centers across the U.S., but how many of them are equipped to take in people that have never been on a lift and shape them into forklift operators; allotting the needed time? You might ask “How much time is needed to get someone up to speed?” I would guess each trainer would have their own opinions and they might run from less than a day to over a month, but my opinion would be that if you could spend the better part of a work week with a small group of new people, you could get them function-al to a reasonable level and able to perform most typical operations on one or even several types of forklifts.
Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not trying to be critical of any company or any trainer because I don’t have the solution to the problem either. The logistics, capital investment, time commitments and liability to pull off this type of training is huge, but we have to find a better way than what is currently available for folks to obtain knowledge and skills.

Hannibal's Tuberack confirms forklift operator safety
Hannibal Industries Inc. conducted and recorded the first-ever, side-by-side comparison between standard structural rack and Hannibal’s patented TubeRack.
The purpose in conducting this test was to demonstrate the safety measures provided to forklift operators by TubeRack. The wreck-ing ball used for the impact test simulated an 18,000 lb. forklift traveling at the speed of 2 miles per hour (mph) impacting both the standard structural rack and TubeRack, presenting a side-by-side comparison. The impact tests included direct, angled and head-on offset hits to the racks.
“Hannibal Industries is proud to be able to offer a racking solu-tion that provides safety provisions to forklift operators in ware-houses and distribution centers globally,” commented Steve Rogers, executive vice president for Hannibal.
The inventor of Hannibal’s patented TubeRack, Andrew Kirby, said, “We were all pleased to see its horizontal spring and dual-mo-ment frame perform exactly as we had expected. Determined by the test results, TubeRack proved capable of withstanding an intense real world impact test.”
The side-by-side comparison displays the standard structural rack not able to withstand the force of the 18,000 lb. forklift traveling at 2 mph. Being hit with the same weight and force, TubeRack was able to bounce back and yield minimal damage. These results serve to increase awareness of the importance for safety precautions to be made within warehouses in preventing significant damage caused by forklift accidents. www.hannibalrack.com
Comprehensive Training – Key to Forklift SafetyBy: Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc.
Annually there are over 34,000 injury accidents that involve forklifts, more than 13,000 Workers’ Compensation claims are led as a result of forklift accidents and 70 to 90% of all accidents are caused by operator error. Furthermore, unnecessary wear and tear resulting in higher maintenance costs are attributable to improper operation and poorly trained operators.
There soaring statistics can be signi cantly reduced by implementing a comprehensive training program to help reduce accidents, injuries, employer liability and maintenance costs, only to realize improved morale, productivity and ef ciency.
The results (shown to the right), of a detailed study sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), found that proper training can improve operator safety and performance by as much as 70%.
Properly trained forklift operators are the responsibility of the employer, as clearly stated in the O.S.H.A. Federal Regulation 1910.178, and safe operating practices must be reinforced in the workplace on a daily basis in addition to the required training, testing, evaluations and employer authorizations.
The training program must include formal classroom instruction, written test and a driving evaluation or performance test for each speci c forklift that the employee will operate. A periodic evaluation of each operator’s performance is required. Refresher or remedial training is required and the employer must check training to ensure that it is current.
For speci c forklift operator safety training, refer to OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck Regulation Z9CFR1910.178, paragraph “L”, Operator Training.
Forklift safety has many aspects. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces regulations governing the manufacture and operation of powered industrial trucks. The Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute, administers the development of consensus safety standards for manufacturing and using industrial trucks. These standards re ect the considered judgment of industry, government safety of cials, users, and private safety experts on issues of forklift safety. OSHA has incorporated these consensus standards by reference into the federal regulations. Updating the consensus standards and working to have them recognized in the federal regulations is an ongoing process. But safety doesn’t come from writing good standards and regulations, it comes from knowing and following them. In other words, it comes from awareness and commitment. National Forklift Safety Day is about enhancing our awareness and renewing our commitment to forklift safety.

MHEDA women in industry initiative
As the number of women entering the primarily male material handling industry grows, it offers exciting new opportunities for women to learn, network and offer their unique skillsets as leaders in the industry.
At MHEDA’s leadership conferences, Liz Richards, MHEDA CEO; Connie Costner, MHEDA board of directors member, and others have noticed a steady increase in the number of women attendees; an exciting trend in a traditionally male industry. So, at last year’s MHEDA Conven-tion, there was a “Women in Industry” breakfast held to see how much support the initiative would attract. To everyone’s delight, there was an overwhelmingly positive response and widespread support for the idea. The breakfast spurred plans for a number of new activities within the initiative, including an upcoming women’s leadership workshop, titled “Women Mean Business,” and the possibility of a Women in Industry conference in 2017.
The Material Handling industry has been largely male throughout much of its history. The recent growth of women both in the industry at large and in leadership positions presents a positive trend, and organizations such as MHEDA, by creating Women in Industry, are working to help women in material handling learn from and network with one another to further improve their opportunities in the material handling world.
These and other plans are coming down the pipeline as part of MHE-DA’s exciting new Women in Industry initiative. Be sure to stay up to date with MHEDA and the Women in Industry initiative to learn more about the cause and to take advantage of opportunities for learning, networking and professional growth.

Toyota announces additions to leadership team
Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU) recently announced Bret Bruin was promoted to director of aftermarket operations and Tracy Stachniak was promoted to director of human resources and training and development.
As director of aftermarket operations, Bruin is responsible for all Toyota Forklift service parts operations, including Fleet Management and Telematics. As director of human resources and training and development, Stachniak is responsible for human resources, internal/associate training and development, and dealer and customer training.
“Bret’s 22 years in the material handling industry, particularly his extensive parts and service background, make him well suited for his new role,” said TMHU President Jeff Rufener. “And Tracy’s background and experience will help revamp and improve our
internal and external training programs. We welcome them both to the executive leadership team.”
Bruin has worked in the material handling industry for more than 20 years. His previous role at Toyota was national manager, strategic planning and dealer development. Prior to joining Toyota, Bruin held several management positions at Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America, Inc. He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Indiana University in Bloomington.
Stachniak has been at TMHU since 2005. Her previous role was national manager of human resources. Tracy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Economics and Finance from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., and a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership in Human Resources Management from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.www.toyotaforklifts.com

Health Nudge
Does your organization have an energy crisis?A workplace is only as strong as its workforce. Does your organization
struggle with employee engagement during the work day? The result can be loss of productivity and health issues. In an effort to address skyrock-eting healthcare costs, companies focus on promoting health to disen-gaged employees.
Unfortunately, health is not enough of a motivator because it’s vague and innocuous, until you no longer have it. What if companies began to take a different approach? Start by asking employees, “Do you want more energy?”
Instead of viewing time as our greatest resource, that resource should be energy. Time without energy results is in disengagement at work and home. I challenge a mind shift change.
If our most critical resource is human energy, it is important to manage it correctly. Jack Groppel, PhD, founder of Human Performance Institute, describes this as “human energy crisis.” A 2014 Gallup poll reveals the decline in physical health is coupled with the rise in obesity, while less than one-third of the workforce reports being engaged at the job.
Exhaustion and fatigue are common complaints in today’s fast paced society. According to the National Institutes of Health, feeling fatigued is not the same as feeling drowsy or sleepy. When you are fatigued, you have no motivation and no energy.
The most effective antidote to our exhaustion and distractedness is energy management. It’s not an option to add more hours to the day; therefore, learning to train, expand and manage energy capacity provides the answer to our well-being.
Most of the time, fatigue can be traced to one or more of your habits or routines, particularly lack of exercise. Sitting has become the new
smoking, draining our body of vitality and energy. Activity must replace the sedentary lifestyle for health to improve.
At TVH, a number of programs and activities are available to increase energy levels. Walking during break and lunch hours as well as walking meetings have become part of the workplace culture.
Currently over 250 employees are participating in a 4-week walking challenge called “Spring Into Action”. The goal of this challenge is to increase one’s activity level.
TVH provides a Garmin or FitBit wearable device that tracks steps and other activity for the challenge participants. Based on their average steps, Nudge Points are earned and can be redeemed for a variety of items.
By the end of the four weeks, the participants’ daily steps and distance walked will have increased and energy levels fuel the desire to maintain this sustainable lifestyle change.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed walking with my co-workers and feeling my energy level improve. The simple act of wearing a step tracker and participating in this 4-week challenge has profoundly impacted me. My daily steps goal is important but increasing my energy and stamina is my real focus,” shares a TVH employee.
Next month, be on the lookout for more information on TVH’s “ac-tive office area” designed to get employees moving while at work.
If you would like to know more about TVH and the Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas, at [email protected].

Ask your professional
Eric,
Just wanted to let you know that Shelving, Inc. has
completed their installation of our new Unirak
pallet racks (Phase I). They did a wonderful job and
your racks look great. (I attached a few pictures)
We have received many compliments on them already and
have passed on Unirak’s information and Shelving, Inc.
contact information to two friends. Looking forward to future
installations in our Phase II and Phase III plans over the next
few years.
A quick question – is your colors of blue and orange paint
available commercially in spray cans? We are thinking of
painting our rivet shelving blue and orange to have them
look similar to our racking.
Todd and I thank you again for you time and the tour last
year … it made the difference and the sale. If we can ever
help your business, even as a secondary source when you
might be in a jam, with steel strapping, shipping products,
protection products, etc., please never hesitate to call!
Best regards,
John A. Haapala

Sellick Equipment breaks ground on new manufacturing facility
On April, 20, 2016, at the young age of 97 years, Walter Sellick along with sons How-ard Sellick – President, David Sellick- Vice President, and grandson Colin Sellick – Systems Manager, had a ground breaking ceremony for
a new multi-million dollar, 120,000 square feet facility. “In order to compete on a global scale, we needed to expand and build a state-of-the -art plant” said Howard Sellick. Sellick Equipment has been manufacturing rough terrain and truck mounted forklifts for over 47 years to a variety of industries including building supply yards, engineered wood products, automotive recycling, oil fi eld services, mining and military applications. In recent years, a new generation of forklifts was introduced featuring enhanced ergonomics, environ-mentally-friendly diesel engines, and increased lift capacities. Sellick products are supported by a nationwide dealer network providing superior parts and service needs. www.sellickequipment.com
