I am learning to…Describe the properties that are used to define the behaviour of engineering materials.
All List and describe the reason for 5 material tests
Most Describe how each test is conducted
Some Justify the importance of material testing
Material Properties:Describe how a material acts or behaves when being used.
• MECHANICAL
• ELECTROMAGNETIC
• CHEMICAL
Tensile Strength:The maximum load that a material can carry before it breaks.
MECHANICAL
The FORCE applied is measured in
Newtons!
Hardness:The hardness of a material is its resistance to wear. A hard material is difficult to cut.
MECHANICAL
Toughness:A tough material is resistance to impact. Tough materials can absorb energy when something strikes them without breaking.
MECHANICAL
Malleability:Some materials are malleable when cold, others have to be pressed into shape.
MECHANICAL
Conductivity:The ability of a material to allow electricity to flow through it.
ELECTROMAGNETIC
Ohm (Ω)
Conductivity is measured as resistance!
Corrosion Resistance:Rust occurs when the iron is exposed to oxygen and water.
It is the formation of red oxides which corrode the material.
CHEMICAL
Corrosion Resistance:CHEMICAL
Which metals rust the quickest?
Steel Aluminium StainlessSteel
Copper
Solvent Resistance:Some rubbers and plastics are attacked by certain chemicals.
These chemicals are called solvents.
CHEMICAL
Environmental Resistance:If unprotected, wood will rot when exposed to water.
Wood becomes more durable when painted or treated with chemicals.
CHEMICAL
Question 1:Name a component of a BMX that must perform well for each property:
a) Good tensile strength
b) Hardness
c) Flexibility
d) Solvent resistance
Question 2:What material properties do you think the following workshop items should have?
Chisel Soldering iron bitHand file Screwdriver
Question 3:What material properties do you think the following domestic items should have?
Saucepan Washing up bottleKitchen Knife Radiator
