Math and the Common Core
An Informational session for parents about the demands of Common Core
Eastwood ElementaryJanuary 21, 2014
Instructional Shifts in MathematicsShift 1 Focus Instruction focuses on concepts that are prioritized in
the standards. More time is spend on fewer concepts.
Shift 2 Coherence Instruction carefully connects learning within and across grade levels so that students build understanding onto foundations from previous years.
Shift 3 Fluency Students develop speed and accuracy with simple calculations
Shift 4 Deep Understanding
Students deeply understand the math and operate easily within a math concepts before moving on.
Shift 5 Application Students are expected to use math and choose the appropriate concept for application
Shift 6 Dual Intensity Students are practicing and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in the classroom – both are occurring with intensity
Standards for Mathematical PracticeMP 1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them.MP 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP 3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP 4 Model with mathematics.
MP 5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP 6 Attend to precision.
MP 7 Look for and make use of structure.
MP 8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
