The President, who was talking about winning both Congress and the Senate from the Republicans in the next election, replied I agree with you although why dont I talk about it later because I am just about to finish. You and me will talk about it. I am going to be coming around. But Abebe continued his message and loudly called for help to free jailed bloggers and journalists. Stand with the people of Ethiopia, dont support tyranny, he said to which the president answered again, I agree with you. We have tyranny in Ethiopia, Abebe said and added, We love you! I love you back, the present replied and noted that his speech was kind of screwed up. That is okay. And we got free speech in this country, he said before wrapping up his speech...Read more page 20

04 MAY 2014 REPORT HAMBURG, GERMANY Ethiopias Shumi Dechasa emerged victorious in a head-to-head duel with Kenyas Eric Ndiema for the Hamburg Marathon title on Sunday (4), the 24-year-old setting a personal best of 2:06:44 the third-fastest winning time in the history of the race.
This means a lot to me, said Dechasa. Its my sixth marathon, and the first time Ive won. My best before this was second in Seoul. The Ethiopian picked up 20,000 in prize money for the win, and added his name to the list of former champions that includes Dechasas training partner Shami Dawit who won the race in 2012 and last years victor, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya.
Dechasa made his intentions clear early in the race, and was always prominent behind the three pacemakers as they passed the halfway mark in 1:03:32. If anything, the Ethiopian found the pace too relaxed. The pace was comfortable for the first half, but still felt a little bit slow, he said. My plan was to run a faster time today but I still ran a personal best, so Im happy.
Shortly after the leading group passed the 30km mark in 1:30:31, Dechasa surged to the front and only the pre-race favourite, Eric Ndiema of Kenya, was able to follow the Ethiopians move. As they entered the final two kilometres, though, Dechasa was visibly the stronger of the leading duo and began to open a gap, which grew to 17 seconds by the time he crossed the finish line victorious in 2:06:44. Ndiema slowed considerably over the final kilometre but held on for second in 2:07:01, with Philemon Rono, also of Kenya, taking third in 2:07:08.
Speaking moments after the race, Dechasa was already looking ahead to later in the year, when he thinks he can break new ground in the marathon and

record a fast time. I will celebrate now with my family and coach, and then take a break for recovery, he said. I will then make a plan for running a fast time in September, 2:05 or 2:04. This win will mean a lot for me in the coming years.
Another notable performance in the mens race came from Japans Yuki Kawauchi, who in his fifth marathon of the year recorded a time of 2:09:36 for ninth place. Kawauchi intends to complete at least five more marathons this year, with his focus now on winning gold at the Asian Games in October.
Rono fulfils role as favourite
In the womens race, Kenyas Georgina Rono lived up to her billing as overwhelming pre-race favourite by taking a comfortable victory in 2:26:48. Rono stayed with the leading group as they passed halfway in a relatively pedestrian 1:13:57 and when she made her move shortly after the 30km mark, the race as a contest was as good as over.
The 34-year-old Kenyan with a personal best of 2:21:39 opened a sizeable lead over the closing 10km and came home with 42 seconds to spare in a winning time of 2:26:48. Ethiopias Dinknesh Mekash won the battle for second, finishing in 2:27:30, with Kenyas Winny Jepkorir third in 2:27:57.
It was good, said Rono. The course was tough. The atmosphere was great, though, with many people out on the course. I felt good, but it was a tough race.
Katharina Heinig was the first German finisher in ninth place, recording 2:33:56. The first of the home contingent in the mens race was Julian Flugel, who finished 14th in 2:15:39, on a day that saw almost 15,000 runners take to the streets of Hamburg.

Ottawa, OntarioPrime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement after participating in events marking the National Day of Honour, which commemorated and recognized Canadas military mission in Afghanistan:Throughout our history, Canadians have fought tyranny and evil around the world because it was the right thing to do.Much has changed since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Towers on 9/11. In response to those attacks, which killed thousands of civilians including 24 Canadians, the Government of Canada stood steadfast beside our Allies and responded swiftly to these deadly acts of terrorism. For the last 12 years, more than 40,000
Ottawa Hon. Chris Alexander, Canadas Citizenship and Immigration Minister, announced that in April 2014 approximately 95 percent of the visitor visas issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada were Multiple-Entry Visas (MEVs). MEVs are a fast and convenient option allowing qualified visitors to enter and exit Canada for six months at a time for up to 10 years. Last month alone, Canada issued more than
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen reflect on the lives lost in Afghanistan at the Hall of Honour. -
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ON THE NATIONAL DAY OF HONOUR
brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, along with hundreds of courageous Canadian civilians, have fought to help Afghans make their country a more stable, secure and self-reliant place to live, free from the yoke of terrorists and oppressors. Our Canadian Armed Forces fought extremely well in Kandahar, arguably the most dangerous province in Afghanistan. The ingenuity, spirit and strength of our men and women has made a difference in one of the most violent and dangerous parts of the world. Their accomplishments and attributes have given Afghans the opportunity to build on the work of these brave Canadians in order to build a better life for themselves. Their contributions are celebrated by Afghans, by our Allies, and
of course by Canadians here at home.Too often in the past our Armed Forces have returned to Canada from their trials with little fanfare. Not so today. Canadians across the country came out in force, united in appreciation, to honour the bravery, heroism, strength and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom and security in Afghanistan. The entire country watched with tremendous pride as the Veterans of this mission marched in the Commemoration Parade. We honoured those wounded by lining up in communities throughout Ontario and in Gatineau, Quebec, to watch the Soldier On Afghanistan Relay, and we were somber during the two minutes of silence marking a special tribute to the fallen and their families.I had the honour of paying tribute to the Families of the Fallen in a private ceremony and to hear first-hand how these remarkable individuals touched their families, friends and the entire country. When the last Canadian flag that flew at NATOs International Security Assistance Force headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, was handed to me, it was a deeply emotional moment. It reminded me of the blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice that Canadians had endured to make Afghanistan a better place; a place where a little girl could go to school, a place where a mother might have medicine for her child, and a place where a woman could vote. Most importantly, the entire day, with
its outpouring of love and affection for our troops, reminded me that a loving and proud nation was welcoming its military home, with open arms, after a job so well done.To ensure that their contributions are forever in the hearts and minds of Canadians, our Government recently announced that we will create a national memorial to those who served in Afghanistan, in addition to making a new inscription to commemorate the mission onto our existing National War Memorial. We will also be renaming La Promenade Building in Ottawa to The Valour Building in honour of their strength and service. I am also pleased to be announcing today that eligible units of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Special Operations Forces who played key roles in Afghanistan have been bestowed with the Arabian Sea or the Afghanistan Theatre Honour. It is a testimony to the national effort that characterized this mission that every major Canadian Army regular and reserve infantry and armoured regiment that sent soldiers to Afghanistan has been awarded the Afghanistan Theatre Honour. As they have done in so many previous conflicts, all of these units have defended Canada and served their country and fellow citizens well.God Bless the Canadian Armed Forces and their families and keep them safe.

Voterlookup.ca, an online tool developed by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), replaces the traditional municipal enumeration form mail-in system. The information collected through the voterlookup tool will be used to build and maintain information for the Preliminary List of Electors and preparation of the voters' list used on election day.
Accessing voterlookup.ca is easy and takes just a few minutes from start to finish. To add or confirm information, electors need to enter their full name date of birth, and Toronto property address.
"Eligible electors are encouraged to check if their information is correct," said City Clerk Ulli Watkiss. "Doing so will ensure they receive a Voter Information Card, which will tell them when and where to vote as well as making the process at the voting place quicker and easier."
Highlighting the success of Canadas multiple-entry visa
Hon. Chris Alexander, Canadas Citizenship and Immigration Minister,
95,000 MEVs to individuals coming to Canada on vacation or to spend time with family. The government has been making changes to facilitate legitimate travel, including investing $42 million over two years to improve the way Canada processes temporary resident applications. This investment, which began in 2013, aims to meet the growing demand to process applications for those who want to come to Canada temporarily. Alexander highlighted the success of Canadas MEV program while announcing a new facilitative visa program for Mexican travellers called CAN+ (Can-plus). Under the CAN+ program Mexican visitors, who have previously travelled to Canada or the United States in the last 10 years, will be processed much more quickly and will not need to provide as many supporting documents. CAN+ is one of a number of facilitative programs available to make it easier and faster for Mexican citizens to visit Canada

San Jose, CaliforniaU.S. President Barack Obama has agreed with journalist Abebe Gellaws demand to support freedom in Ethiopia and help free bloggers, journalists and political prisoners jailed by the tyrannical regime.
While Obama was wrapping up his speech at a glitzy Democratic National Committee reception in San Joses Fairmont Hotel, journalist and activist Abebe Gellaw interrupted the president and called support for freedom in Ethiopia. The event jointly hosted by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and and Y Combinator CEO Sam Altman was mainly attended by Silicon Valley business and political leaders.Journalist and activist Abebe Gellaw interrupted president Obama
Abebe began his message with a positive note. Mr. Obama, we Ethiopians love you. We demand freedom for Ethiopia, he said.
And we got free speech in this country, he said before wrapping up his speech.
In a letter Abebe handed to the President at the end of the event, he noted that he wanted to take the rare opportunity to raise the voices of the oppressed people Ethiopia.
Mr. President, as an exiled journalist and freedom activist trying to raise the voices of the oppressed people of Ethiopia, I can tell you that Ethiopians have genuine respect for this great land of freedom and your inspirational leadership, he wrote.
But it pains and frustrates me and millions of Ethiopians to see that for over two decades the United States has overridden its core values and forged a questionable alliance with the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front, a terrorist group that has continued to oppress, massacre, jail, torture and displace defenseless Ethiopians.
According to Abebe, the rare opportunity
Abebe Gellaw interrupted Obama and Obama agrees with Ethiopias call for freedom
was another unmissable chance to demand our freedom and expose the tyrants at such a high profile platform of the most powerful decision makers in the world. I am glad I took the chance though security was extremely tight. At the end of the day,we should consistently demand the U.S to the review its questionable foreign policy towards Ethiopia. That was also the heart of my demand, he said.
Full text of letter
President Barack Obama1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500 May 8, 2014Dear Mr. President,
It is a great honor and privilege for me to attend this unique reception organized in your honor at the Fairmont Hotel, San Jose.
There is probably no greater place in the United States than the Silicon Valley that truly exemplifies the transformative power of freedom. Transformative Silicon Valley companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Oracle and HP, are more veritable expressions of Americas power and dynamism than its military might.
Mr. President, can you imagine Silicon Valley if all the visionary innovators and dreamers that have made it possible are unjustly locked up in harsh jails to break their spirit and silence them? Mr. President, the answer is simple and obvious. Fortunately, the United States is not ruled by mindless and ruthless criminals like Ethiopia.
Mr. President, as an exiled journalist and freedom activist trying to raise the voices of the oppressed people of Ethiopia, I can tell you that Ethiopians have genuine respect for this great land of freedom and your inspirational leadership.
So many Ethiopians were glad that you sent Secretary of State John Kerry to Ethiopia last week on a mission of promoting democracy and human rights, among other things. They were also pleased that Secretary Kerry demanded the tyrannical government to release Zone 9 bloggers including Nathnael Feleke, a young blogger he had a chance to meet and inspire last year in Addis Ababa. Nathnael, Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu and so many journalists, activists and dissidents locked up in rat infested prisons have committed no crimes except for dreaming about freedom, justice and equality for their country. Still worse, a few days after Mr. Kerry returned home, over fifty defenceless civilians have been gunned down and countless others have been detained and tortured for opposing land grab and
President Barack Obama has agreed with journalist Abebe Gellaws demand to support freedom in Ethiopia
displacement of the poor in Oromia region and Gondar.
The young men and women condemned confinement in dark jails are dreamers and visionaries that want to see the transformative power of freedom, dignity and justice. Like Martin Luther King Jr., they too have a dream that one day children of oppressors and the oppressed will sit together as citizens of a nation to decide the destiny and fate of their country. They do not dream of revenge and retribution but forgiveness and peace. As Secretary Kerry correctly said during his recent trip to Ethiopia, Africans have an opportunity to bend the arc of history towards reform, not retribution; towards peace and prosperity, not revenge and resentment. That is exactly what we aspire to see in Ethiopia, a country wallowing in the quagmires of poverty, tyranny and backwardness.
Mr. President, it is, therefore, with utmost hope that I urge you, to do your level best not to compromise our freedom and dignity in exchange for short-term security concerns. While the security concerns of the United States in the Horn of Africa is understandable, forging alliance with a terrorist regime will have far more destabilizing impact in the long term. If this tyranny and terrorism continues unabated, Ethiopia will be another Rwanda or Somalia. We Ethiopians do not wish that to happen, a specter that is becoming more and more imminent with each passing day under the terrorist TPLF regime oppressing our people with impunity.
Mr. President, we remember your speech and promise to Africa that you made standing in Accra: No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of
brutality and bribery. That is not democracy, that is tyranny, and now is the time for it to end. Mr. President, we Ethiopians need to end the corrupt tyranny that has made our lives meaningless. Help us to end Apartheid and state-sponsored terrorism in Ethiopia at least by desisting from propping up those who are oppressing and tormenting our people.
Mr. President I loudly and clearly appeal to you to help Ethiopia move in the right direction. Yes, you can!
- Mr. President, Ethiopia needs freedom and justice.- Help us free our bloggers and journalists.- Help us free Eskinder Nega and all political prisoners.- Help us free Zone 9 bloggers.- We need freedom, more than food aid.- Mr. President, help us free all political prisoners.- Help us stop the massacres and terrorism against Ethiopians.- Unites States, dont support dictators in Ethiopia.- TPLF is a terrorist group. Dont support it.- President Obama, please stand with the people of Ethiopia.- President Obama help us to end Apartheid.- Mr. President thank you for inspiring us to tell the truth.
I sincerely apologize for the interruption and inconvenience. I do hope that you understand and stand with the oppressed people of Ethiopia.
Most respectfully,
Abebe Gellaw

Chief Judge Ray Wyant is leaving the provincial court to accept a unique contract with the United Nations to consult on a judicial project in Ethiopia. One of Manitoba's most recognizable judges is stepping down from the bench to tackle what may be his biggest challenge yet -- bringing judicial reform to a developing Third World country. Ray Wyant informed his colleagues this week he was leaving his post in the provincial court, effective May 16, to accept a prestigious consulting project in Ethiopia on behalf of the United Nations. Wyant will spend the next several months working on an extensive initiative for all courts in Ethiopia, which includes developing a judicial code of conduct, a comprehensive training curriculum for judges and reviewing rules and standards of judicial ethics. "I think it's going to be a huge opportunity to make a difference," Wyant told the Free Press. "It's a fairly unique thing. I think as much consulting as I'll be doing, I'll also be learning." 'I think it's going to be a huge opportunity to make a difference' -- Ray Wyant. Wyant

at downtown's Sojourn House Refugee Shelter, the gateway of many of Toronto's newest immigrants and refugees, to being an instructor at the Ryerson's University's Continuing Education Suicide Prevention and Intervention programme. At Seneca College, he served as an instructor in its Counseling & Disability Services program by providing a variety of services such as counseling, support, referral services as well as mentorship. As an instructor, he is making a positive impression to the future guardian of Canada's social programs.
Gordon has been a popular anti-racism course instructor at a wide variety of venues and been a teacher on mental health issues, mediation and criminal law at a number of colleges in Toronto. He has also been a mentor of countless new and old immigrants navigate their way in their adopted new country. Wherever he has been stationed, he has expanded his role, been an inclusive activist and helped create a movement of good.
I am proud to call him a mentor. That is precisely why I nominated him for a prestigious Aroni Image Awards earlier this year. He is a worthy candidate. His decades of social justice activism influenced by Jesuit teachings that he passionately follows, positive community work and nation building deserves to be recognized
and acknowledged.
At the Margaret's Housing & Community Support Services, where he served previously for instance as manager of its signature mental health & justice program, he provided leadership in the unique delivery of its services to its diverse clients. At Sojourn House Refugee Shelter, where he served as its manager of the shelter program for six years, he provided leadership and direction to new immigrants via mentorship.
At the Jamaican Canadian Association where he currently works, he has become an activist CEO to the more than 50 year old organization expands its services and become self-sufficient.
The first time I met Gordon was at Sojourn House, though he vividly remembers meeting me previously, where he had invited me as a guest speaker. He wanted me to talk about a unique program of Maytree Foundation I was involved in then. In his introduction of me, he spoke eloquently of his own successful biography to Canada's future citizens and how we too can also attain it. He spoke well, was poised to a fault and he never seemed to patronize anyone of our future destinations. It seemed he believed in our hopes rather than our limitations.
Since then, I have witnessed him in action. He has mentored me and many others become successful Canadian citizens. I have seen him, in admiration and respect, as he is easily charmed by the music of my native Ethiopia at Toronto's diverse Ethiopian eateries and as strangers rush to him for advice. He listens and he responds well even if it compromises his leisure time.
I recently witnessed him in awe in deep conversation with one of Toronto's well known activist, Gordon Cressy, as they both planned on nation building projects in his native Jamaica and Toronto and how they can both cooperate to maximize their potential. I was heartened to know that there are indeed such people in our backyards concerned for public good and service.
What are his future plans? In a year, Gordon expects to complete his PHD from the University of Toronto's Sociology Department as well continue to lead JCA in a positive direction of long-term growth and vision while continuing to mentor a new generation of community leaders.
I have absolutely no doubt he will indeed be successful.
Judge eyes Ethiopia reformsWyant departs job here to work on judiciary in developing nation
By: Mike McIntyre
PHIL HOSSACK / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Enlarge ImageChief Judge Ray Wyant
is no stranger to taking on what may be perceived as big projects and has one of the more unique resums. He has served in all facets of the justice system after receiving his law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1978, including:-- Spending his first seven years working as a defence lawyer in private practice.-- Spending the next 13 years working a provincial Crown attorney, including a stint as deputy director of prosecutions.-- Spending the past 16 years working as a judge, including a stint as the chief judge of the provincial court. Wyant even tried his hand at newspaper reporting in the mid-1970s, working as an intern at the Free Press, which included a memorable project -- going undercover as an inmate at Headingley Correctional Centre and spending a night behind bars. He still has the framed article, along with his mug-shot photo that was included, in his office. Wyant has earned a reputation of being a fair, caring judge who always goes the extra step in engaging criminals in his courtroom. Rather than just give a lecture and hand down a sentence, Wyant has always strived to learn what makes criminals tick while attempting to find solutions to avoid repeat appearances. He summarized his views in a poignant farewell sent to his colleagues on the bench this week. "It has been an honour and a pleasure to work in our court. I will miss the daily challenge of dealing with the people and situations that come before us that touch every part of a person's emotions," Wyant wrote. "We see the very raw underbelly of society. We deal with the mad, the bad and the sad charged with criminal offences and we often see the very tragic consequences of their crimes on others. It is a scarring
process for those victims and accused who come before us -- and for us."
Wyant has been one of the more progressive judges in Manitoba. He's long advocated for cameras in the courtroom and has publicly applauded a recent decision by all three levels of court in the province to launch a pilot project that has seen some select cases broadcast live.
Wyant has also spent several years doing a monthly appearance on a nationally syndicated radio show out of Winnipeg in which he takes live calls about the criminal justice system. That type of water-cooler discussion has often carried over to the hockey rinks and grocery-store aisles where members of the public will often stop to give their two cents with the always-engaging Wyant. Wyant will fly to Ethiopia toward the end of this month to begin the process of
working with all levels of judges in that country. The contract runs through October and could be extended to include other nations, he said. "It's an opportunity I felt I would be foolish to pass up at this stage of my career and after nearly 37 years of life in the criminal justice system," said Wyant. He won't be entirely gone from the local judicial landscape. Wyant will have to return to finish a few reserved cases he's already presided over, and plans to apply for the senior judges' program in Manitoba. He would then join a handful of other "retired" judges who are called to help out and fill in when needed.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into the skin at precise points known as acupuncture points.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is based on the theory that an essential life energy, called Qi (chi), flows through the body along channels called meridians. Each meridian is connected to a specific internal organ. When the flow of Qi is blocked or out of balance, illness or pain results. The stimulation of acupuncture points along the meridians releases the blockage of Qi and promotes the smooth natural flow of energy, restoring balance and health to the body's systems.
According to Westernized medicine, it is proposed that acupuncture produces its effects through regulating the nervous system. Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called "endorphins". These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pain pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body's own internal regulation systems.
Acupuncture has been shown to aid in the activity of immune system cells at specific sites in the body. In addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones and therefore affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processess that regulate a person's blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation, and promoting physical and emotional well-beinghttp://www.lakeshorechiropractic.com/For more information call: 416-733-7760
9 Timeless Nutrition Tips for Any AgeYour health is your life. Make it a priority.
There are a zillion nutrition tips floating around out there. Here are a few simple ones that have worked well for me over the years.
1. Limit junk food or dont eat it at all. Whatever junk food you have in your kitchen, throw it out and replace it with healthy foods and snacks. Look into other ways to comfort yourself and think of food as nutrition, not entertainment or emotional fodder. 2. Go on a healthy food shopping spree. Dont look at prices. Buy items that are healthy and appealing. Fill your cupboards, pantry and fridge with healthy foods so you will not feel like your kitchen is empty. 3. Limit eating out. Most restaurant food has high amounts of sodium, sugar and
fat. There are few exceptions. Spend more time with family or friends cooking together, or enjoy cooking for yourself. 4. Visit a farmers market. Because farmers markets make buying healthy food fun and interesting. Most of the produce will be freshly picked, and taste heavenly compared to the refrigerated and thawed produce we get at grocery stores. Many farmers markets have healthy homemade jams, local honey, hot sauce, or pickled this and that. 5. Cut out the white stuff. Sugar has zero nutrition. Cut out high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners, too. Sugar is linked to the growing obesity epidemic in the US and the rising rates of diabetes. It is also linked to heart disease, which remains the number one killer of people in the US. Use natural sweeteners in baking like raw honey, date sugar or molasses, which retains high
amounts of nutrients. 6. Exercise. No level of nutrition can make up the difference for lack of exercise. Walking counts, as does taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Dr. Walter Willett of Harvards School of Public Health places exercise at the foundational base of his food pyramid. 7. Eat at a table. According to Michael Pollans latest book, Food Rules: An Eaters Manual, No, a desk is not a table. If we eat while were working, or while watching TV or driving, we eat mindlessly, and as a result eat a lot more than we would if we were eating at a table, paying attention to what were doing. When eating somewhere other than a table, stick to fruits and vegetables. 8. Eat smaller portions by buying smaller plates. I gave my giant-sized dinner plates to the Salvation Army and bought smaller square plates. And I eat less because
of it. According to Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, in a study focused on size illusions, People with a large bowl and a three-ounce scoop dished out 57 percent more ice cream than those given a smaller bowl and smaller scoop. 9. Cut out beverages and drink water. Water is free, whereas most beverages come with a price a health price and a financial price. One popular 12-ounce soda boasts a whopping 150 calories, and it offers no nutrition. As a treat, drink tea instead of soda.Remember, it only takes 21 days of doing something to make it a habit. So pick one of the tips above and start making it a healthy habit today.
