Gosper County May 2019 4-H News
Flooded with 4-H Volunteers “I pledge my hands to larger service.” 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learn-ing leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Participating in community service is one way to continue to help youth learn those life skills and become productive and contributing members of their own communi-ties.
Disaster recovery is one way that youth and adult volunteers can get involved with their community in a time of crisis. As with any service project, it is important to be prepared and have resources that pro-vide support in making a safe plan and successful event. Extension faculty/staff should assist in assessing any risks to volun-teers and property. Extension faculty/staff or capable 4-H leader (adult volunteer) may supervise and assist where needed. No group should engage in a service project that poses a risk for any person or property. A Guide to Managing 4-H Youth and Adult Volunteers During Disas-ter Recovery provides some tools to help assist in facilitating a suc-cessful event and help minimize potential risks. Here are a couple ways to help: 1. DONATE using the link below. All funds will go to the 4-Hers helping 4-Hers program. 2. CREATE A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN on your page and share with all your friends today! (https://www.facebook.com/fund/Nebraska4H/)
Funds are available to any Nebraska 4-H fami-ly, who has been impacted by a disaster and has been recommended for support by a 4-H parent or guardian, 4-H volunteer, or 4-H alum-ni. Visit http://ne4hfoundation.org/2019/03/4-hers-helping-4-hers-2/ for more information.

Tractor Safety Training The most common cause of agricultural-related death in Nebraska is overturned tractors and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Employing uncertified individuals under the age of 16 is a liability risk for farmers if those young people operate such equipment.
Nebraska Extension offers Tractor Safety Training for youth looking to become certified through a Hazardous Occupations Course. All youth, ages 14-15, working on a farm or ranch other than their own MUST be certified through a Hazardous Occupations Course. Anyone older than 15 is also welcome to attend these trainings, but those under 14 are not eligible. Extensive training on tractor and ATV safety occurs during in-class lessons with hands-on activities. Instilling an attitude of safe-ty and respect for agricultural equipment is the primary goal of this course. For more information https://4h.unl.edu/tractor-safety-training
