WELCOME BACK!
ST. THOMAS PARISH & ST. MONICA PARISH RETURN TO MASS PLAN MAY & JUNE 2020
MASS MINISTERS
Sacristan: We will need one (1) sacristan for each mass. During this restart period, we will consecrate the entire bag of hosts. Do not touch or count individual hosts until July. Monitor the tabernacle; if there are enough for mass, we will just consecrate (1) priest host <or> (2) priest hosts if the deacon is present. We will also need two chalices if the Deacon is present
Altar Servers: No altar servers are needed until July due to the
need for social distancing. Lector: One (1) lector is needed for each mass. That lector will
proclaim the first reading, psalm, and second reading. The lector will sit in the sanctuary to shorten the distance to walk to proclaim the readings. They are not required to wear a mask while proclaiming the readings.
Eucharistic Ministers: If the Deacon is present, none are needed. One (1) will be needed in the absence of the Deacon. That person must have a mask and must wash hands before mass with Father and sanitize their hands before and after communion with Father.
Ushers: Help people to find open seats if they are looking confused or we are getting close to capacity. When capacity is reached, place signs on the door indicating we are at capacity. DO NOT hand out bulletins to people; they need to pick those up off the table themselves. NO books, hymnals, or missalettes should be in the pews.
Cleaners: Three (3) people are needed before each Mass to disinfect the surfaces that are touched the most (door handles, knobs, toilet handles, water fountains, sink knobs). We only have enough cleaning supplies to clean the major touch surfaces. Parishioners will need to bring their own hand sanitizer for their hands and wipes (if they need them) to wipe things around their individual seating area.
Greeters: will not be used during this reopen period. This is to encourage people to quickly enter and exit church. This goes against hospitality beliefs that I hold personally, but it is a necessity for this reopen period. The priest and the deacon will also follow this as well during this time.
Announcements: all information will be printed in the bulletin. No announcements until July.
(Continued on page 4)

MASS MODIFICATIONS Favorite Chair or Pew: It is likely that your favorite pew or chair
will not be available during this reopen period. PLEASE be flexible and accommodating. Please do not move chairs or rearrange furniture. There is a reason for the chair alignment and the open pew choices.
Coming to Church: The doors will open only Ten (10) minutes before the church start time to allow for cleaning and traffic. Please wait in your vehicle until ten minutes before mass to maintain social distancing.
Households sit together:
Chairs: If there are three (3) of you, sit at a place with three (3) chairs. If you are single, sit a place with a single chair. Please do not move a chair unless we are close to capacity and there are NO remaining choices.
Pews: Use the pews marked with green. Space appropriately.
Cry Rooms: Reserved for kids and parents only until July.
Beginning of Mass No procession or carrying of the cross. The clergy will sit
in their seats about 2 minutes before mass starts. At the start of mass, the clergy will go to the Altar to begin mass.
Music
We will complete mass with the Antiphons. No music, hymns, or accompaniment until at least July. Our goal right now is it safely get as many people as possible back to church and back into the Sunday Mass Mode.
Collection The collection basket will be available at the entrances to the church. We will not pass the basket but will bring the baskets to the altar at the very start of mass for safety.
Our Father
No holding hands during the Our Father.
Sign of Peace Father will say “The Peace of the Lord be with you always” People Respond: “And with your spirit” Skip exchange of peace with neighbors Immediately Recite “Lamb of God”
Communion
The Priest and the Deacon (or Eucharistic Minister) will receive at the regular place/time in the mass. The Priest and the Deacon will purify their own chalice but leave the Body of Christ on the altar for distribution to the people.
The Priest will then complete the Closing Rites (Final Prayer & Dismissal)
People will receive at the end of mass after the prayer and the dismissal. This is to allow Parishioners to receive communion and immediately exit the Church to allow for preparations for the next mass. Before coming to communion, make sure that you are ready to exit church.
Maintain social distancing as you are coming up to communion, exiting Church, and all the way to your vehicle.
If you normally receive communion seated, please remain seated and the priest or deacon will come to you after the communion line is complete.
MASS SCHEDULE ANYONE who is sick, feeling sick, caring for a sick
person, or has deep fears about returning to church is granted a dispensation (excused absence) from the Sunday Obligation until further notice from Archbishop Kurtz. To help make sure that everyone can pray Sunday Mass, two masses will be offered around each regularly scheduled mass time. People should pay attention to the alphabetical order so that we can accommodate all who wish to return to church. The last name of the driver of your vehicle should decide which mass time to attend:
Daily Mass: Daily mass will resume on July 7th, 2020.
Online Mass: Online mass will continue to be posted Tuesday through Friday and Sunday for those who are not ready to return to church. We want to keep you connected to the mass and the parish. For time saving and schedules, all online masses be recorded at St. Thomas Historic Church after May 23rd.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Only clergy should attend both masses at a location. Holy Water Fonts will not be filled until further notice Parish Council and Finance Council needs to meet in
June for brief in-person meetings to approve the budget. Masks will be needed for these brief in-person meetings.

All other committees, regular meetings, events, rentals, etc. can
resume their meetings in July, pending no other delays from the Archbishop.
First Communion/RCIA/Baptisms: we are waiting more direction
about the next steps for these events. They will happen soon. We will keep you posted.
Time: Just a gentle reminder that we must start on time and adhere to
the time schedule to give everyone a chance to worship back in church on Sunday.
Patience: Please be patient with everyone and everything. No one
really knows how to do this the CORRECT way. This initial plan may have to change, even after the first week. But, we have to get back to church because I miss praying with you all so much. I cannot wait for July when we can greet each other properly at the entrance and hear about you as you arrive to church each week. Hurry up July! Hurry up Virus!

Christ fulfilled his vocation by finishing the work God gave him. An important part of our stewardship is the discernment of our unique vocation. Stewardship is not just a matter of doing more volunteer work. It is a response to the personal call God makes to each of us – to fulfill the unique tasks that God has given to us.

In nomin Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sanctus
To understand the title, “Mother of God,”
we must first clearly understand Mary‟s
role as mother of our Savior, Jesus
Christ. As Catholics, we firmly believe in
the incarnation of our Lord: Mary
conceived by the power of the Holy
Spirit. (Confer Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew
1:18-25.) Through her, Jesus Christ–
second person of the Holy Trinity, one-in-
being (consubstantial) with the Father,
and true God from true God– entered this
world taking on human flesh and a human
soul. Jesus is true God and true man. In
His person are united both a divine nature
and a human nature. Mary did not create
the divine person of Jesus, who existed
with the Father from all eternity: “In fact,
the One whom she conceived as man by
the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son
according to the flesh, was none other
than the Father‟s eternal Son, the second
person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the
Church confesses that Mary is truly
„Mother of God‟ (Theotokos)” (Catechism,
#495). As St. John wrote, “The Word
became flesh and made His dwelling
among us, and we have seen His
glory: The glory of an only Son coming
from the Father filled with enduring
love” (John 1:14).
For this reason, sometime in the early
history of the Church, our Blessed Mother
was given the title “Mother of God.” St.
John Chrysostom (d. 407), for example,
composed in his Eucharistic Prayer for the
Mass an anthem in honor of her: “It is
truly just to proclaim you blessed, O
Mother of God, who are most blessed, all
pure and Mother of our God. We magnify
you who are more honorable than the
Cherubim and incomparably more
glorious than the Seraphim. You who,
without losing your virginity, gave birth to
the Word of God. You who are truly the
Mother of God.”
However, objection to the title “Mother of
God” arose in the fifth century due to
confusion concerning the mystery of the
incarnation. Nestorius, Bishop of
Constantinople (428-431), incited a major
controversy. He stated that Mary gave
birth to Jesus Christ, a regular human
person period. To this human person was
united the person of the Word of God (the
divine Jesus). This union of two persons–
the human Christ and the divine Word–
was “sublime and unique” but merely
accidental. The divine person dwelt in the
human person “as in a temple.” Following
his own reasoning, Nestorius asserted that
the human Jesus died on the cross, not the
divine Jesus. As such, Mary is not “Mother
of God,” but simply “Mother of Christ”–
the human Jesus. Sound confusing? It is,
but the result is the splitting of Christ into
two persons and the denial of the
incarnation.

PRAYER - THE HAIL MARY
St. Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria (d. 440)
refuted Nestorius, asserting, “It was not that
an ordinary man was born first of the Holy
Virgin, on whom afterwards the Word
descended; what we say is that, being united
with the flesh from the womb, [the Word]
has undergone birth in the flesh, making the
birth in the flesh His own…” (Against Those
Who do not Wish to Confess that the Holy
Virgin is the Mother of God). This
statement affirms the belief asserted in the
first paragraph.
On June 22, 431, the Council of Ephesus
convened to settle this argument. The
Council declared, “If anyone does not confess
that the Emmanuel is truly God and
therefore that the holy Virgin is the Mother
of God (Theotokos) (since she begot
according to the flesh the Word of God made
flesh), anathema sit.” Therefore, the Council
officially recognized that Jesus is one person,
with two natures– human and divine–
united in a true union. Second, Ephesus
affirmed that our Blessed Mother can
rightfully be called the Mother of God: Mary
is not Mother of God, the Father, or Mother
of God, the Holy Spirit; rather, she is Mother
of God, the Son– Jesus Christ. The Council
of Ephesus declared Nestorius a heretic, and
the Emperor Theodosius ordered him
deposed and exiled. (Interestingly, a small
Nestorian Church still exists in Iraq, Iran,
and Syria.)
The incarnation is indeed a profound
mystery. The Church uses very precise–
albeit philosophical– language to prevent
confusion and error. Nevertheless, we must
ponder this great mystery of how our divine
Savior entered this world, taking on our
human flesh, to free us from sin. We must
also ponder and emulate the great example of
our Blessed Mother, who said, “I am the
handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me
according to thy word.” May we turn to her
always as our own Mother, pleading, “Holy
Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
