Dear Fellow HSL Employee
As we approach the official start of summer with Memorial Day on Monday, I’m pleased to
report that HSL has entered the 3rd Quarter of FY16 with a good financial performance. While
some of our services have volumes below budget, EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes,
Depreciation and Amortization) is at or ahead of budget across HSL thanks to great budget
management. Thank you all for always working so hard to provide our residents, patients, and
families with outstanding care, and doing so as cost effectively as possible so we can care for
as many seniors in our community as possible.
In addition to EBITDA, Operating Cash Flow is
also ahead of budget—thanks mainly to the
strength of our Development team and their
outstanding fundraising efforts—as well as the
appreciation and generosity of our donors.
Fundraising and the associated philanthropic
support we receive from individuals and
foundations do much to enhance the programs
and services we offer our residents, patients and
families. Philanthropy also supports our HSL
Scholarship Program and a
number of Professional
Development opportunities for our
employees. Please be sure to read
the philanthropic details in the
stories below about ribbon-cutting dedications for Great Days for Seniors and The Danesh
Family Residences at 100 Centre Street, and about the launch of Rabbi Sara Paasche-
Orlow’s and Rabbi Joel Baron’s newly-published book. These events are just three of the
many that Development organizes, and I want to personally thank and applaud each team
member for “Owning” and “Teaming Up” to bring these and all Development activities to
fruition.
Please know that your comments about the Friday Report are always welcome—just send
your note to Lou’[email protected]
HSL Highlights Earlier this week we celebrated Brookline residents and long-
time HSL supporters, Marilyn and André Danesh, at a ribbon-
cutting event pictured above. The Daneshes’ very generous
$1.5 million gift has formally named CCB’s 100 Centre Street
as The Marilyn and Andre Danesh Family Residences at
100 Centre Street. Their donation will be used across HSL to
fund programs and services for our seniors, helping each live
her or his best life in the best place. Please click here to learn
more about this gift.
Thanks to a $45,000 grant from BNY Mellon, the participants of HRC’s Great Days for
Seniors now have a safe, secure, accessible
outdoor patio that was dedicated at a formal
ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this week. The
new patio area will enhance the quality of
programming for participants by offering activities
such as gardening, outdoor exercises, and outdoor
dining options. Congratulations to Suzie Kaytis,
Director of GDS, and her team.

I was so honored to attend and speak at last week’s education lecture and reception at NewBridge
celebrating the recent publication of “Deathbed Wisdom of the Hasidic Masters.” The book, translated and
annotated by HSL Hospice Care Chaplain, Rabbi Joel Baron and HSL’s Spiritual Care Director, Rabbi Sara
Paasche-Orlow, sheds light on Jewish traditions about death, the afterlife, and how to care for people in
their final days. The book discussion was moderated by HSL’s Rabbi Suzanne Offit. HSL and Hebrew
College co-sponsored the evening’s program that celebrates the legacy of Jewish Memorial Hospital (JMH)
through its funding for HSL’s annual education lecture. Please click here to learn more about Rabbi Joel’s
and Rabbi Sara’s fascinating book.
Employee Happenings
HSL was a proud Gold Sponsor of “A Map Through the Maze,” a conference for Alzheimer’s care
professionals sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. HSL Employees Heather Dexter, Social
Services; Hali Diecidue, Spiritual Care; and Jenna O’Brien and Robin Stewart, Life Enhancement,
presented a workshop titled, “Quality of Life Interventions for Care Partners and Individuals with
Dementia." Dr. Eddy Ang, a physician on the RSU, also presented a workshop titled, "Emerging
Technologies to Support Care for Individuals with Cognitive Impairment." As a sponsor, HSL had
premium exhibitor space, and I want to thank Bill Burgey, Marketing Communications; Brian
Murphy, Admissions; and Ellie Belanger, Sales for AL at NewBridge, for representing HSL and
engaging with hundreds of conference attendees.
Regina Dain, HRC’s Senior Expressive Therapy Leader and Leticia Prieto, HRC Music Therapist, recently
presented at a conference sponsored by the New England Regional Music Therapy Association. Their
presentation was a training module for 30 direct memory-care staff titled, “Music & Movement for
Increased Engagement.” Please click here to review and learn from Regina and Leticia’s presentation.
Get Involved--Get Engaged
Please consider joining with your Hebrew SeniorLife colleagues at the Boston Pride Parade on Saturday, June
11 where we will show our collective support and commitment for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) employees and seniors. Boston Pride is an organization that promotes diversity, unity, visibility, and
dignity across Greater Boston by building and strengthening community connections. Click here for details.
This month’s Continuous Improvement@HSL features the results of “Operation Roll,” a project led by Sarah
Charest, HRC Occupational Therapist, with a cross-functional team. The project results are amazing and ensure
residents have the type of wheelchair they require, and one that is well-maintained. Please click here to read
more about this project.
Best of the Best
I enjoyed receiving your wonderful comments about the special “Best of the Best” edition of the Friday Report during
Employee Week. I always appreciate hearing from you and want to share these two comments that pretty much
sum up what your colleagues had to say:
“So proud to be part of such an extraordinary organization and group of colleagues…thanks for a great edition
celebrating the everyday ways we can make a difference in the lives of those we serve.” Laura Baber, CCB
“What a joy to read each excerpt and to see the smiling faces of the employees mentioned.” Rabbi Suzanne Offit
Please share this Report with your colleagues who may have limited computer access or with those who may not be checking their email today.
Sincerely,
Lou Woolf
