The celebration of Heart Month 2012 continues!
A cardiac arrest patient reunion to take place this morning at
10:15 am in the Bay Area of Post 100! The Medic Dispatch
would like to invite all available Medic employees to join us for
this special event.
Tom McCann went into cardiac arrest in August 2010 outside
of Providence High School. Paramedic John Fisher and
Deputy Director Kevin Staley (who was riding third that day) arrived on the scene, began treatment, initiated Code
Cool and then rushed Mr. McCann to the cath lab.
Mr. McCann wrote a very touching letter wanting to recognize the efforts of the crew. He expressed that without
outstanding response of our crew members he would not be here today; and for that, he wants to thank them personally.
In addition, we will be honoring a bystander, driver’s education instructor John Potts, who called 911 and initiated CPR
when Mr. McCann collapsed. Without his quick-thinking, Mr. McCann’s chances of survival would not have been as positive.
Hope to see you there as we continue to celebrate Heart Month 2012!

“You will be dead in 10 years if you don’t do something about your weight.”
At 30 years old and weighing in at 285 pounds, Medic Telecommunicator, Kristi Rhinehart received this devastating prognosis
from her doctor. In 2007, Kristi took action and made the call that would change her life. She and her doctor decided on
gastric bypass surgery as the best solution to start the process that would save her life.
“All of the excuses you can throw out the window because you are playing your
life. This is your life you’re talking about. You’ve got to commit. You have kids
and family members and you want to be there for them, and if you’re not healthy
enough to do it…then what’s the point?”, said Rhinehart.
Now, five years after her surgery, Kristi has lost a total of 135 pounds and she
has her life back on track. While she acknowledges the use of gastric bypass
surgery is a drastic weight control option, it is just a tool in her wellness journey.
Kristi uses a variety of ways to regularly help take care of her body.
“Using the Medic gym has been extremely helpful because it’s so convenient.
It eliminates your excuses,” she said.
Rhinehart also credits healthy eating and staying physically fit to help maintain
her healthy lifestyle. “My goal is to become a healthier person, get off the
processed foods that are killing us and be a healthier person in general. If I lose
weight as a side effect, then great,” she said. “My philosophy…weight loss is a
side effect of healthy living, not a goal.” says Rhinehart.
Her advice for others wanting to take steps to lead a healthier life?
“Find something you love that motivates you, and stick to it,” Rhinehart says.
It is easy to let stress dictate your life, especially in the EMS field, but by
changing small habits, like pre-making meals, cutting portions and increasing
physical activity can make a huge impact.
“Exercise is a great stress reliever, you will be a better paramedic/EMT and
dispatcher if you can relieve your stress,” she said.
Medical studies support Kristi’s advice and show a direct link between
increased physical activity and decreased stress hormones.
“All you have to do is take care of your body and your body will take care of
you, and make no excuses for wanting a healthier lifestyle.” Rhinehart said.
For more heart healthy tips or weight loss information, please visit the
Employee Health Services section of the Medic Extranet or contact a member
of Medic’s Wellness Committee to help achieve your personal wellness and
fitness goals.
Way to go Kristi!
