6th September, 2012
Dear Esteemed member,
INVITATION TO THE 3RD QUARTER WATER & SANITATION (WATSAN) NIGHT 2012
The sanitation conditions in Peri- urban compounds in Zambia are problematic. The population density
increases fast and pit latrines/ toilets contaminate the underground water while many people fetch their daily
water from shallow wells. Particularly in the rainy season there are regular outbreaks of cholera and typhoid.
Linking the areas to the sewer network of the town, for instance in the case of Lusaka’s outskirts is not
affordable. Partially unplanned structures, the high level of rock outcrops and the poor general drainage are
the reasons for that.
The Water and Sanitation Association of Zambia (WASAZA) therefore invites you to its quarter 3 Water and
Sanitation (WATSAN) Night this year on “Improving Sanitation through Feacal Sludge Management and
Biogas construction, case of Kanyama, a peri urban area in Lusaka Zambia”. The event is scheduled for
Tuesday 18th September 2012 starting at 17:30 hours and ending at 21:00 hours. The venue is yet to be
advised but note that dinner will be provided.
Invited are various government ministries such as; Ministry of Mines Energy and Water Development, the
Ministry of Local Government Housing, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Lusaka City Council. Also
invited are: Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s), private firms, African Development Bank, USAID, Care
International, USAID, UNICEF, Water Aid, World Vision Zambia and many others.
Kindly contact Ms. Kamuka Kang’ombi to confirm your participation by Tuesday, 11th September 2012 on
email: [email protected] / [email protected] or phone: +260 211 293477.
We look forward to seeing you at the WATSAN night.
Yours faithfully,
Jonathan Phiri
