10 ISSUES PER YEAR
There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a year that we won’t forget in a hurry; the global pandemic has impacted on our health, finances and families – on our very way of life.
It is to be hoped that the worst of the pandemic is now behind us and, as an industry, construction is better placed than most others to not just survive but thrive. Even during lockdowns imposed around the world most countries classified construction as ‘essential’ and many governments are actively looking to large-scale infrastructure investment to provide their economies with a boost.
The technological revolution that has been transforming construction is providing the sector with increased productivity and efficiency while also enabling work to be done and monitored away from the construction site, helping in an age of social distancing.
There will still be challenges ahead, but the future is positive. International Construction will continue to publish the magazine ten times a year as well as bring you construction technology supplements, newsletters, webinars, special issues such as the Global Construction Guide, social media updates, podcasts and breaking news.
Going forward, the construction industry is set to become more vital than ever to the global economy, and we will be there to report on it every step of the way. ANDY BROWN Editor

FUTURE GLOBAL GROWTHThe International Monetary Fund (IMF)has provided GDP growth figures for 2019 for the global economy, advanced and emerging economies and predictions for 2020 and 2021. Analytics company Global Data have also produced information on the expected future performance of advanced and emerging markets.
Both agree that, although it is admittedly from a lower base, emerging economies are not expected to suffer as big a drop in 2020 and also have a larger predicted recovery in 2021. According to the IMF, however, there are concerns that emerging markets could be hit hard due to a less advanced healthcare, reliance on tourism and higher poverty levels.
EQUIPMENT SALES PREDICTED TO RECOVERGiven all that has happened, the forecast made by Off-Highway Research is relatively positive. Construction equipment sales will fall from the high of just under 1.1 million units in 2019 to a predicted figure of approximately 930,000 units in 2020. When placed in the context of the last decade this figure is relatively robust.
One of the reasons this figure is relatively strong is China. The global powerhouse is the world’s biggest market for construction equipment sales and the government has invested in infrastructure projects to provide a boost to the economy.
Stimulus spending in China will lift the market by an expected 14% to take sales to their highest since the previous stimulus boom in 2010-2011. Prior to the pandemic, sales in China were expected to fall in 2020 as the market passed its cyclical peak. All the other major markets for construction equipment sales – Japan, North America, India, Europe – will see declines in 2020.
Global sales are expected to increase in 2021 to around 950,000 units and then see a slight rise in 2022 before sales pass the million-unit mark in 2023 and 2034. North America is expected to see strong growth in this time period with sales not too far from China’s by 2024. The industry is perhaps fortunate that Covid-19 occurred on what would have been a ‘down’ year anyway, and the predictions for future sales are broadly positive.

What is remarketing?Remarketing is the process of (anonymously) following or tracking website visitors online after they have left a website site where they are served advertisements via a cookie. A cookie is a piece of data that embeds itself in the browser of the user, enabling tracking of the websites they visit.
Who is remarketing good for?Remarketing is an effective and helpful digital marketing strategy for every type of business, selling any kind of product or service. Small to medium sized businesses, and large corporations alike can benefit from remarketing.
What does this mean for visitors?Remarketing is designed to make the advertising experience as friendly to the consumer as possible. People are constantly bombarded by advertisements for things they are not interested in. Remarketing tries to combat this, connecting customers to business as easily and painlessly as possible.
