It is nearly impossible to fully equate the level of focus and commitment Catamount student-athletes provide to Western Carolina University. As you will discover in this guidebook, our goal is to provide you a further glimpse into their level of dedication and duty. Their devotion and effort are replicated throughout the year. Evidenced by their endeavors in the classroom, their hard work at practice, and determination for excellence on game days, they uphold the vision of what it means to be a Catamount!
The ability for our student-athletes to compete successfully in all phases of their experience in Cullowhee is made possible by the generosity of our Catamount Club members. Your philanthropic support provides them not only the opportunity to wear the Purple and Gold with pride, but also grow into becoming active, well-rounded alumni of whom we all can be proud. While Catamount athletics has experienced double-digit percentage growth in scholarship donations since 2011-2012, our scholarship expenditures for student-athletes still rank sixth in the Southern Conference.
Through the launch of our annual Catamount Club scholarship fund campaign, the importance of surpassing our goal of $1,250,000 by June 30 is critical to supporting the dedication our student-athletes show each and every day at WCU while they challenge for Southern Conference Championships. While we have made significant progress since my arrival to the Catamount Community in many areas, I firmly believe we have just scratched the surface of what can be accomplished as we strive to be the best, not only in the Southern Conference, but beyond.
Our student-athletes are competing to be champions and I am personally asking you to be a champion as well. Join the Catamount Club or renew your membership today! I ask you to not only renew at your current scholarship donation level, but also consider upgrading to the next level while helping to recruit new members to the Catamount Club. Your commitment to scholarships allows our student-athletes to exude excellence and perpetuate the dedication to championship-level success at Western Carolina University – in the classroom, in the community, and on their respective fields and courts of competition!

RISE TO THE
CHALLENGE
Alexis Robinson, a junior Catamount track and field student-athlete with two SoCon championships behind her already, rises before dawn six mornings each week and starts her day with sprint drills, endurance training or footwork exercises. After that it’s off to class, followed most days by a shift at the on-campus Chick-Fil-A, a sorority committee meeting, weight training and study time. For most student-athletes, living on campus isn’t optional — it’s a necessary part of a busy, all-day schedule.

SUCCESSKasey Cooke, a midfielder for Catamount women’s soccer, packs her 15-hour course load into the afternoon hours, leaving mornings open for training. A recreational therapy major with plans to pursue a doctoral degree in physical therapy, Kasey says the morning workouts make her all the more focused for an afternoon of biology and anatomy. She has maintained a 3.9 GPA and Honors College status at WCU, and said she sees the juggling act of class time, study time, practice time and travel time as the best possible preparation for life as a successful career woman.

Devin Peterson, a sophomore guard for Catamount men’s basketball, wrapped up the 2015-16 season with great hope for next year. The team won 8 of its last 10 games and advanced to the Southern Conference semi-finals. Devin’s focus for the off-season is to increase his time with WCU’s strength coach and to gain muscle and endurance. “Next year I’m stepping into an important role and my body needs to be prepared for that,” he said. Unlike many student-athletes, Devin is able to stay focused on improvement in the off-season thanks to being one of only 26 percent on full scholarship. Student-athletes on partial scholarship often assume debt or take on jobs in the off-season.

INVEST IN THE
EXPERIENCE
Jo-Leigh Vervelde had the typical sense of academic shock as she quickly realized her freshman year that “homework” and “studying” for college courses was unlike anything she’d experienced in high school. As a starter for Catamount volleyball, Jo-Leigh didn’t have the luxury of long evenings and weekends at the library. Still, she finished the year with a 3.8 GPA thanks in large part to required athletics study hall. “Having that specific time you have to go in and study forces you to develop the right habits from the beginning,” she said. Individualized academic support programming is one of the many student support expenses that add to the total cost of the student-athlete experience.

TO THE TEAMFRIDAY 4:30 P.M. – PRACTICE
B.J. Nobles leads the Catamount baseball team in the number of service hours he has committed to the community. After 6 a.m. workouts he often goes over to the local elementary schools to walk kids to class, and during the holiday season he organized gift bags for families in need through the local Christmas Connection store. He said it’s the support of his teammates that keeps him committed to this kind of service even when the season gets busy. “The baseball team is a family. We do almost everything together, even when we’re not on the field,” he said. This year, as a junior, B.J. hopes to perform well enough on the field to set himself up for a professional career, all the while keeping up with classes and continuing to volunteer.

COMPETITION
Detrez Newsome, a sophomore running back for Catamount football, began to emerge as a Southern Conference star in the middle of the 2015 season. In the end, he finished first in the conference for total rushing yards, first in rushing yards per game, first in all-purpose yardage, and second in the SoCon for scoring. Thanks to student-athletes such as Detrez, Catamount football has finished second and third in the conference for the last two seasons. Meanwhile, we continue to get beat by our conference competitors in the race to provide scholarship support to our student-athletes.

SUNDAY 11:30 P.M. – PREPARE
Bethany Galloway, a junior and Catamount women’s golfer, spends most Sunday evenings in her Cullowhee apartment planning for the week ahead. Lately, she has spent this rare quiet time hunting for internship opportunities as she begins to plan for life after graduation. She said being a student-athlete has been the best possible preparation she could hope for. “You have a lot of responsibility; you report to someone other than yourself; and you have to take it very seriously. It really does prepare you for the real world,” she said. With most of WCU’s student-athletes going on to careers outside of sports, this preparation for life is the ultimate measure of success for Catamount athletics.

How Do I Earn CATS POINTS? The primary mission of the Catamount Club is to raise funds in support of student-athlete scholarships. Therefore, members who make contributions to the Catamount Scholarship Fund will receive two points for every $100 in addition to points earned through cumulative giving. Contributions that are restricted to a specific sport or program will receive a half point for every $100.
Only gifts to support the Catamount Scholarship Fund, including the tax-deductible portion of registration fees to participate in tournaments on the Catamount Golf Tour as well as sponsorships of the tour, will count toward an annual membership in the Catamount Club.
How CATS POINTS WorkCATS POINTS are designed to reward Catamount Club members for their lifetime giving, consecutive years of contributions, season ticket purchases as well as points earned through membership recruitment for their continued support of WCU Athletics.
The Catamount Club uses your membership giving level first, and then your CATS POINTS ranking within your level, second, to determine the allocation of reserved parking for football, season tickets, post-season tournament tickets, request for seat upgrades (based upon availability) and Catamount Club special events.
Categories in Which Members Receive CATS POINTS Include:
• Contributions to the Catamount Scholarship Fund
• Consecutive years of giving
• Football, basketball and baseball season ticket purchases
• Membership referrals
• Capital giving
• Endowment giving
• Contributions to a specific sport
At the beginning of each membership year, the Catamount Club will calculate CATS POINTS for every donor account and rank your membership by point total.

Gifting MethodsDonations to the Catamount Club can be made by cash, checks, credit card, bank draft or payroll deduction (WCU employees only). Please make your checks payable to the WCU Foundation and note Catamount Club in the memo section.
Credit CardsThe Catamount Club accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover for pledge payments. Monthly or quarterly donations to fulfill membership pledges are also available and must be scheduled with the Catamount Club office.
METHODS OF GIVING
Gift-in-KindRather than a monetary gift, the Catamount Club may accept goods and services that assist in saving expenditures to the WCU athletics budget.
Matching GiftsMany companies and corporations provide matching gift programs for employee contributions. Check out the new MATCHING GIFT SEARCH ENGINE at matchinggifts.com/wcu/ to see if your employer matches gifts and how it can increase your gift and membership level.
Major Giving OpportunitiesAs the Catamount Club strives to provide funds for student-athlete scholarships, it’s also important to continue the efforts of funding athletic endowments and improving the facilities for our programs. In both areas, WCU athletics is facing challenges keeping up with our

Southern Conference competition. Private investments in Western Carolina University Athletics are crucial if we are to provide the best experience possible for our student-athletes to be competitive on an annual basis while making us proud as alumni and fans.
Athletic EndowmentsEndowments represent the future of WCU athletic scholarships. Funds contributed to an endowment generate scholarships in perpituity. All donations to support an endowment are invested and only a percentage of the endowment total each year may be withdrawn, not invading the principal, to help fund scholarships for our student-athletes. The minimum requirement to create a new endowed scholarship begins at $25,000. Donations to endowments also qualify for CATS POINTS.
Madison Legacy Society for Athletics – Planned GivingMadison Legacy Society for Athletics provides you, as a fan or friend of Western Carolina University Athletics, with the unique opportunity to make a lasting contribution beyond your own lifetime. By using creative financial plans or estate plans, Madison Legacy donors can make a gift to support Western Carolina Athletics that may not be possible in their lifetime, while realizing significant tax benefits. Insurance policies, real estate, annuities, bequests and trusts are among the several ways to leave your legacy.
