We are constantly trying to make sense of
the world.
![Page 3: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
We do this by “modelling”.
![Page 4: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
We see this …
Rotman I-Think
![Page 5: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
But our model is this …
Rotman I-Think
![Page 6: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
We see this …
![Page 7: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
But our mental model is this …
![Page 8: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Or this:
![Page 9: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Or this …
![Page 10: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Or this.
![Page 11: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
We don’t see past our first impressions.
![Page 12: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
We see things that aren’t really there.
Rotman I-Think

We make things up.
Rotman I-Think

Once we see something …
Rotman I-Think
![Page 15: Mental Models](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081505/5681655f550346895dd7e1d8/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
It’s hard to unsee.
Rotman I-Think

We miss things.

Sometimes we don’t even know where our models come from.

We oversimplify our models.

Summary: To understand our world we build models in
our heads. This happens whether we want it to or not. Models are useful; they help us make sense
of limitless information. We need to be aware of our models. Our models are always wrong. We are only ever working with our current
best model.
