Message from our Executive Headteacher Message from our Deputy Headteacher
Lucas Vale really has got talent! What a fantastic morning we had
celebrating the many gifts and talents your children have. Each
class put forward representatives who performed to the whole
school.
We
had:
Singers, dancers, magicians, comedians ….
and even some jugglers!
The performers did us proud, as did the
audience. It was so wonderful to see each
member of our school staff and children clapping, singing along and being supportive friends.
Not only did we have lots of fun, but we also raised lots of money for Children In
Need! Thank you all for your contributions. We will announce the final amount
raised as soon as we can!
Mrs Cobblah was away for a few days this week, studying with other Lewisham
headteachers. We missed her very much and look forward to telling her all about
our special day when she returns.
Have a wonderful weekend! Get lots of rest and enjoy family time.

Message from our Executive Head
Windrush History
We were blessed to have Mr Eddie Capone come to talk to all the children in Year 6 from both the
schools in the federation, to share some of his experiences coming to Britain over fifty years ago. Eddie
explained how his parents left to come over to England to make a home, leaving him with his aunt in
Jamaica and how sad and lonely that made him feel. In 1960 when he was thirteen years old his parents
had established themselves. They sent for him to came over on a cargo boat. Eddie was shocked by the
racism he met in England. He explained that in Jamaica at school there were white, black, Chinese and
Indian children and no one ever though or spoke in racist terms.
There were only two black boys in his school in Birmingham he was persistently called racist names
mocked and bullied. His mother had made him promise that he would not fight, so he did not. He
endured the taunts for many years and he and his parents reported the bullying but nothing happened.
Eventually he could take it no longer and fought back. He was expelled from his school for fighting and
left secondary school without qualifications. This was a great shame for his family. Every job that he
managed to get he was expected to do the dirtiest most difficult tasks, things improved when his family
moved to London although finding accommodation was a problem as many private rentals would not
take Black people and the signs reading NO BLACKS, NO DOGS, NO IRISH were common at that time.
Eddie decided to join the army. He was awarded the accolade of being the top recruit of the 200 in his
intake. He served in Cyprus with the United Nations force and saw quite difficult
active service in Aden during which several his comrades were hurt.
On his return Eddie did many things but was influenced by his uncle who was a
famous Jazz musician in Liverpool. Eddie became a musician and a roadie
involved in all things to do with music and performance. Eddie worked with
producers, such as Trevor Vallis, Biddu Geoff Haslem and bands such as The
Foundations, The Elgins, Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come, Arthur Lee and Love,
Chairman of the Board, Billy Preston, Edwin Starr, The Upsetters, which later
became the Wailers with Bob Marley, also Casablanca was one of the first bands
to be signed to Elton John’s Rocket Label.
We were please to hear a little of Mr Capone experiences of coming to Britain in the 1960s. History is
brough to life by listening to the experiences of out Elders. Thank you, Mr Capone, for sharing with us.

This week in Nursery
In Nursery we came to school wearing odd socks and learnt about saying kind words to each other for Anti-Bullying week. For maths we washed and looked carefully to pair up patterned socks, then we hung the socks outside to dry.
On Wednesday we dressed up as Superheroes to launch our topic! We discussed their appearance and superpowers. Although we were inundated with so many calls at the Superhero headquarters to rescue families stuck in gigantic webs and cuddly pets stuck in slime!
This week in Reception
Reception have had another fantastic week! Our topic is 'Shine a Light'.
We read the story of 'Can't You Sleep Little Bear'. We have been reading the story of ‘Can’t You Sleep Little Bear’. It really is a lovely story about a little bear who doesn’t like the dark.
We have also been learning the value of num-bers! Did you know that 3 is 1 and 1 and 1, 3 is 2
and 1, 3 is 1 and 2 and 3 is 3 and 0 and 0 and 3! Some much information about the number 3!
We've been learning how to use scissors correctly. It's very tricky at first but we've been doing so well!
We've been playing lots in the outdoor area. We are still building our friendships and learning to share the toys and resources!
We've been brilliant at building! "No-one allowed on this building
site without a hard hat!"
We had lots of fun in PE with Mr Phillip. We were learning how to
roll and receive a ball with just one hand
The week in science, 6A were investigating how refraction changes the direction of how light travels
This week in Year 6
In class we researched facts about cameras from the past to the present day. We did this by first
matching sentences to the correct camera. We worked in pairs. Later we wrote our fact files about
cameras.
This week in Year 3
Fun Facts The Ancient Greeks and Chinese used an optical device called the ‘camera obscura’ to project an image of the surroundings on to a screen. This invention played an important role in the development of cameras and photography. The ‘Kodak’ camera was developed by George Eastman and went on sale in 1888, pioneering the use of Photographic film. It was simple box camera with a single shutter speed and fixed focus lens.
