located in Piazza Brunelleschi within the historical city center of florence, italy, this Project estaBlishes a new entrance Building for a humanitarian liBrary. the Piazza although located in the Beautiful city center is in a dilaPidated state and calls for a rehaBilitation of the PuBlic sPace to Become a new center for PuBlic interaction.
Being new to the italian context i looked to the vernacular of the surrounding PuBlic architecture and found success through the imPlementation of a raised PuBlic Platform. diagrammatically the Building Parti is that of two intersecting Bars, one Private and one PuBlic, to create an ‘l’ shaPe slightly shifted. the creation of this form creates a new Piazza which is sheltered from the vehicular traffic moving through the site.
the ground floor houses two differently sized theatres as well as a BookshoP. removed from street level, the raised Portion houses an art gallery, study rooms, café, and outdoor seating/study area to mediate Between.

this Project was a short exercise focused on the develoPment of a system for the creation of a Park located along the Bank of the arno river in florence, italy. again within a foreign context, i looked to the Pre-existing infrastructure of PuBlic sPaces and oBserved that many of the PuBlic sPaces are missing in variety in scale and levels of Porosity.
there is an aBundance of large, flexiBle sPaces in order to oBserve and Be oBserved, But these sPaces do not cater to smaller more intimate PuBlic functions. in resPonse, i develoPed a system of fluctuating densities intended to create a sPectrum of sPaces which are reliant on the density of trees and articulation of the ground Plane. using circles of various sizes as a way of maPPing the density, i then Placed trees at the centroid of each circle.
the creation of differing sPaces was generated By interconnecting the trees in a weB of line-work, giving way to hardscaPe, grassy oPen sPaces, and Planted areas. the variety of sPatial sizes allows for a Broad range of Programs to take Place within the Park, including, a dog Park, cafes, sPorts fields, and a large gathering sPace for a multitude of events to take Place.

oBservation of nature and creating a Platform in which to view it was the focus of this Project. located in the remote hills east of san clemente the oBservation facility is an oPen air Building used to house visitors only for a weekend or for research PurPoses.
Private and PuBlic Program areas are sPlit By a half height level change, with only the living/kitchen/Bathroom quarters Being enclosed from the elements. Program includes viewing Platforms, a lecture sPace, a Private living quarters, and research sPaces.
the aesthetic of the Project contrasts against the setting But in doing so removes the occuPant and gives them an oBjective PersPective of their surroundings.

none of the structure within the Building is hidden and is Painted orange to give truth to construction while creating a Playfully Bright environment where children can Be insPired and intrigued.
the Building itself is a Bar Parti with truss sPanning a 150’ distance in order to create a recreational and outdoor eating sPace Beneath the Building. the multiPurPose is located suBgrade adjacent to the recessed outdoor activity sPace creating one large sPace for multiPle functions.
Protection, safety, and creating a large outdoor recreational area were the main driving forces Behind the design for the koreatown elementary school located in los angeles, ca. the school acts as a Barrier to noisy, ‘western avenue’ to the west of the school, while the classrooms look to the east toward a more calm residential area.
