Microsoft Map 97
Microsoft Map 97 is a tool that allows the user to analyze data that have a geographic component. Maps allow the
user to comprehend the meaning of large amounts of data. Trends and relationships that may not be apparent in purely numeric data can often be seen when the data
are placed into a map. Microsoft Map 97 is free with Microsoft Windows/Microsoft Excel. Help for Microsoft Map 97 is available in the help areas on your computer
and on the WWW. Help for the newly released (and very powerful) Microsoft MapPoint 2001 (which is sold as a
separate software package) is available with the software and on the WWW.

1. Microsoft Map 97 components are located in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Datamap
2. Run the MapInfo Data Installer for the map: DATAINST.EXE. The “Map Manager” dialog box will appear. Select the desired map from “Map Features” or, if you’ve previously created a map, “Map Templates”.
3. Launch Microsoft Excel 97 or Microsoft Excel 2000.
4. Enter the data in columns. One column must contain geographic data (i.e., state names, country names, et cetera). You can enter your own data, import data from external sources, and/or use the geographic and demographic datasets that come with MS Excel 97 and MS Excel 2000. The third source of data is in an MS Excel file named “Mapstats”. The “Mapstats” file is located in a folder named “Data”. The “Data” folder is located in the “Datamap” folder.
5. Select a cell range. One of the selected columns must contain geographic data.
6. Click the “Map” icon on the “Standard” toolbar. (It looks like a globe.)
7. Click and drag an area where you want the map to appear. If more than one map is applicable to your dataset, a “Multiple Maps Available” dialog box will appear and tell you to select the map that you want to use.
8. The applicable map, a “Map” menus bar, a “Map” toolbar, and a “Microsoft Map Control” box will appear. Edit the map with these tools. You can save the map as a template.

Summary Of Microsoft Map 97
Microsoft Map 97 is a tool that allows the user to analyze data that have a geographic component. Microsoft Map 97 has several major limitations, though. It does not allow more than 16 different colors, although “Value Shading” maps show various shades of a color. It does not have separate maps for Asia or for most of Africa. When a map is revised it sometimes loses data; this can be a major problem and is something the user needs to check during revisions and when copying a map. Microsoft has released Microsoft MapPoint 2001, a truly awesome mapping and geographic information system (GIS)
package, as part of their Microsoft Office Suite of productivity software. However, where Microsoft Map 97 is free with Microsoft
Windows/Microsoft Excel, Microsoft MapPoint 2001 is sold as a separate software package. A free 60-day trial version of Microsoft
MapPoint 2001 is available from Microsoft.
