HOW TO GET IN TOUCH

MIKE WEATHERLEY’SREPORT ON THE CHANGE WENEED IN HOVE &PORTSLADE

Conservatives in Hove are leading theway in tackling climate change withproposals to introduce electric carcharging points on the city’s streets.

The council has become the first outsideLondon to install on-street charging points. The move is designed to encourage morepeople to drive environmentally-friendlyelectric cars and is part of the council’scommitment to sustainable transport.

The Conservatives are also leading theway in looking at environmentally friendlymass transit systems, considering the firstmonorail of its kind in the UK, instead ofmore buses sharing already overcrowdedroads.

An integrated approach to transportmeans carefully structured cycle lanes (notlike those in Grand Avenue!) and plans to

reduce the current parking fiascos withschemes like the redevelopment at the newSackville Industrial Estate, which will have550 underground car parking spaces.

It also means recognising that all formsof transport have their part to play ingetting around the city and supportingenvironmentally friendly options.

Brighton and Hove suffers from ashortage of affordable family housing, with many young families moving out ofthe city – forced out by prices.

Central government has imposedregional housing targets and the pressureto meet these targets has led developersto build or propose large-scaledevelopments with accommodation that istoo small for the needs of families, such asthe units proposed in the previous KingAlfred development – a development thatwould have done nothing to retain familiesin the heart of the city.

Conservatives have promised to givepower back to local people so they candecide what type of housing they want intheir area. That way, we can ensure that the

right type of housing is built and that theinfrastructure to support any newdevelopment – such as schools, GPs andtransport – is in place.

It’s time for change. It’s time moredecisions were made locally and time forless central government interference.

I won’t promise things I cannot deliver. But I can look you in the eye and tell youthat in a Conservative Britain:

If you put in the effort to bring in a wage, you willbe better off.

If you save money your whole life, you’ll be rewarded.

If you start your own business, we’ll be right behind you.

If you want to raise a family, we’ll support you.

If you’re frightened, we’ll protect you.

If you risk your safety to stop a crime, we’ll stand by you.

If you risk your life to fight for your country, we will honour you.

Ask me what a Conservative Government stands for and theanswer is this: we will reward those who takeresponsibility, and care for those who can’t.
