4. CarbonFootprintImproving climate performance has been an integral part of the IDC’s climate changemainstream strategy. This critical bold step has beendemonstratedinthepastbytrackingandmonitoringof itsclimaterelatedassets intermsofGHGemissionsdisclosure.Theintentionbeingtocommittoclimatechange,promoteandembraceinvestmentlendinginprojectsthatpromotesthetransitiontolowcarboneconomy,accountforclimatechangeactions,supportthegovernmentemissionreductiontargetanddemonstratescorporateenvironmentalleadership.ThispastfinancialyearendingMarch2018,theIDCs’GHGemissionsinventoryhasremainedmarginallystable.However,itsconsolidationbasedonfinancialapproach,theemissionsincreaseto1445653tCO2e.Theseemissionsexceed0.1MtCO2ethresholdlimitprescribedintheAirQualityAct of 2004 as amended. Companies exceeding such threshold limit are expected to annually report on their carbonmanagement plan. TheindividualmaterialbusinesspartnersshowedGHGemissionsbelow0.1MtCO2e.Itisthoughtthatsuchincreaseinemissionsmaybeattributabletoenergyintensiveprocessesorinefficientprocessingtechnology.
TheIDCaloneshowedaGHGinventoryof6503tCO2e,amarginalincreaseof0.8%comparedtotherecalculatedbaselineofa6450tCO2ereportedin theprevious FYendingMarch2013/14. This translated into associatedemission intensityof 7.66. Such increasehasbeenobserved tobeassociatedaircongas(R22Gas)whichappeartohaveincreasedsubstantiallyfrom165tCO2eto215tCO2eduetofrequentmaintenances.TheconsumptionofR22,thoughverysmall,itscontributionishigh(GWP1810timeshigherthanCO2).
Segmentationofthetotalcarbonfootprintestimaterevealsthatscope1emissionsincreasedfrom3%to16%onadditionoftheemissiondatafromsubsidiaries(Fig1).Whilescope2emissionsincreasedfrom56%to84%onadditionofemissiondatafromsubsidiaries.Scope3emissiondatahasbeenexcludedfromthediscussionduetoitscomplexityinnatureandvariouschallengesindatacollectionbysubsidiaries.However,thescope3emissioncontributionis41%.
TheIDCcontinuouslymonitorstheimplementationofitscarbonmanagementstrategytoensurethatallmaterialsubsidiariesaretransparentintheircarbonfootprintdisclosureandvoluntarycommittoreduction.
