Two parks at Nolambur (one at phase I and the other at phase II)
which was completed long back and was awaiting the opening by the Tamil Nadu Government was officially thrown open to the public on Saturday (March 4). It is learnt by a reliable source that 1.68 crores have been
spent for shaping the parks, that was started about eight months back. The park at phase I has many unique features unheard of in this part of the city. A gymnasi-um for the senior citizens, a tower with a clock that an-nounces a thirukural every one hour and also gives its meaning. There are many herbal plants with a note explaining its finer quali-
ties. Children’s play area in-cludes a see saw, slide, swing and much more. Jogging track has the distance marked on the sides and there is a small stretch with pebbles laid which is believed to be having an acupuncture effect.
The rest rooms are of great quality and one needs to see it to believe it. The other park is smaller in size but is also equipped with better features. The opening of these two parks is certainly a boon to the residents of Nolambur.

Chennai Port, Maduravoyalproject to resume
After years of suspense, the Tamil Nadu govern-ment two days back af-firmed its commitment to implement Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated road project jointly with the Centre soon. The Centre also expressed its interest to extend the project by an additional 10km, taking the reach from Maduravoyal to the city’s periphery. The cost of the project has more than doubled now.
The project suffered a setback after the previous government stalled it im-mediately after assuming charge in 2011, citing en-vironmental concerns. Now talks are on between state and central agencies to revive the project at the earliest.
aadhaar cardmust at nationals?
Aadhaar cards as age and identity proof may soon be made compulsory for player entries at nation-al-level meets conducted by sports federations. The Union sports ministry hopes this will curtail age fraud to a great extent.
It plans to make it com-pulsory from this season not only for entries to its national-level competitions but also for registration of new players.

Youth CornerThought for the Week
Once a crow named Balu caught hold of a piece of meat from the roadside. The crow was carrying it to its place at a dis-tance. On seeing the meat, a number of crows followed Balu. A few crows even attacked Balu. Balu was surrounded by a lot of crows. Balu could not fly on any side. Getting desperate, Balu dropped down the meat piece.
Immediately, the fellow crows started flying down towards the meat. Balu felt happy that it was free. The entire sky was available to it for its flying and enjoyment.
More often, like the crow, we go after silly things. And in the process, we fail to enjoy the great things in life. Even when we reach mean targets, we grab them so greedily as though we do not have anything else to do. We put in all our efforts to save them, without understanding the better prospects. We go by the dictum, ‘a thing of beauty is a joy for ever’. Rather the converse is true - a thing of joy is beautiful for ever.
We look to only pleasurable goals in-stead of beneficial goals. Beneficial goals are automatically pleasurable in the end. We fix limited goals, much less to our potency, attain them and try to possess them for ever. In doing so we get tense, get into troubles and spend our life insipidly. We never think of higher goals. We cage ourselves in narrow career-centric and family-centric goals and leave aside soci-etal or national goals.
What is the difference between a man who lives and dies such a life and a dead-wood ?
To see the sky, the chick has to break the shells.
Shall we break our shells to see beyond the shallow things in life?
(Courtesy: “Wings of Thought” by Yuva Shakthi Youth Welfare Association)
Can We Break the ShellS ?
Plea to stop SWD work on 1st street
Storm water drain work has been initiated by the Corporation at Anna Nagar Western Exten-sion, W Block, C. Sector, 1st Street. Already there is a storm water drain provided in the same 1st Street and runs via 4th Street to East Main Road. There is no need for an additional storm water drain at this place and the proposed SWD may be executed in others streets where there is no provision (3rd, 5th, 16th to 18th Streets).

Tankers will be fined for wasting water
Chennai Metrowater is planning to levy fines on tankers
that spill drinking water on the roads.
With Chennai facing a water crisis this summer, the water agency has re-duced piped water supply.
Nearly 520 tankers have
been hired to provide street sup-ply. The dependency on tankers is steadily on the rise and the number of daily trips has in-creased from 4,500 to about 5,200.
In a bid to prevent wastage, Metrowater officials organised meetings with lorry operators and drivers in area offices. Op-
erators have been instructed to check for repairs and whether lids and valves are closed before trans-porting water.
Metrowater managing director Arun Roy had instructed area en-gineers to check lorries for leakages and plug them before distribution at the filling points, says a press release.

Pushed to the wall due to the cash crunch caused by demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 cur-rency notes, a section of street vendors in the neigh-
bourhood have taken to e-wallets to transact business with regular customers. Some of the fruit vendors and sellers of knick knacks on the Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road have be-gun to accept payments via one of the popular e-wal-lets Paytm. The vendors
embraced the concept of digital transfer of money for their wares as they were beginning to lose custom-ers but the transactions via e-payments is yet to reward them with rich business.
The vendors, who ac-
cept e-payments, have put up boards on their carts saying ‘Paytm accepted here’.
When Mogappair Mail approached these vendors with curiosity to know what prompted them to open a Paytm account, Si-lambarasi, a mother of two
kids who has been manag-ing her husband’s fruit stall said, “My husband heard about this concept. After demonetisation, many regular customers stopped coming to us stating cash crunch as the reason. If
they go to big shops they do not need to have to pay cash and so my husband thought of doing some-thing to overcome this problem. He came to know about Paytm through one of his friends and at the same time a garment seller on this side opened an e-
wallet account. We also got inspired and started one. Now since, the cash crunch got solved to a major ex-tent, not many are opting for it. We had started this two weeks ago, so far we had only Rs 500 being transferred through Pay-tm.” Shiva, the garment seller on the payment said, “An executive from the Paytm Company ap-proached us and motivated
to start Paytm account. So I just started this account but have not yet activated it because I am worried if they would deduct any money as commission. More over the money gets transacted digitally is tax-able. I am doing this busi-ness at a small level; I don’t think if they impose any tax I can bear that. That’s why I haven’t started col-lecting payment through
Paytm mode.”A few other fruit shops
and a tender coconut shop have also put the Paytm board and in a few shops the stickers have been torn and they too think the digital transaction may lead to tax payment and so a few of them did not acti-vate it and their initial en-thusiasm to take over to digital payment mode has waned.

Two share auto rick-shaws have been lying unclaimed in
the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood for quite some months now. One of these share auto rickshaws has been parked on the side of the Shanthi Colony Road. Another vehicle has been spotted parked at the en-trance of the Thiruman-galam-Roundtana Road diagonally opposite the Amma Unavagam.
The share auto rickshaw on the Shanthi Colony Road was parked there at least five months ago. “We initially thought the driver must have run out of fuel and parked it here but no one has claimed the
vehicle so far. It amuses us as to why someone should park his share auto rick-shaw here and simply abandon it,” says Rajesh Kishore, a resident of a Housing Board colony in the vicinity.
The share auto rickshaw has since been covered with numerous posters. Conservancy workers en-gaged by the Corporation of Chennai to clean the roads daily are finding it difficult to remove the gar-bage that accumulated be-neath it over the months. “I suspect that this share auto rickshaw is being used by anti-socials for nefarious activities under the cover of darkness.
One night as I was try-ing to park my car, I heard
some voice from inside the share auto rickshaw. I did not want to risk going closer to see who was in-side,” claims a resident of Jawahar Colony, which is located nearby. “I wanted to call the police but then I thought it would involve unnecessary hassle of later on going to the po-lice station and testifying. So I just kept quiet,” said the resident, who did not wish to be identified.
T h e o t h e r share auto rick-shaw has been lying on the busy Thiruman-galam-Roundta-na Road intersec-tion. “Even traffic policemen on the road
have not bothered to check why the vehicle has been parked there. It is not such a difficult task considering that all that they need to do is to check the registration number and ascertain in whose name the vehicle has been registered and trace the owner,” says Ka-meshwaran a motorist.

By N Rathi Chithra Dusty roads have be-
come a major concern for the residents of Mogappair especially after the storm water drain work has been carried out at various plac-es. The work involves digging the road and in the process the earth re-moved has been left in mounds and the dust
keeps flying whenever ve-hicles pass by, thereby causing heavy air pollution which makes the resident very uncomfortable.
"Spraying water could be a solution to minimise
the dust but they do not follow it. That too when the season is very dry dust gets accumulated every-where. If we keep our ve-hicle outside, on the very same day you will find a thick layer of dust settled on it. If we go out, our face becomes very black," says Arumugam who stays in Pari Road where the work has been on for more than
two weeks.The dust pollutants in
the air can cause many diseases such as wheezing, asthma, frequent cough and cold, nasal allergy and other pulmonary diseases.
dusTy roads a Cause for Concern
We always have this prob-lem and it got aggravated after the drain construction work. My nose is burning if I go out. It's impossible to take the kids outside otherwise they will suffer with constant cold and other breathing problem, says Dorai, a retired officer, who stays in Ori Street
where the work has been happening for the past two weeks.
"If any vehicle passes by this place especially buses, the dust enters our nostrils and mouth besides creating a burning sensation in the
eyes. It is advisable to wear cooling glasses and masks so that we can keep our-selves safe to some extent" says Noorjahan.
The dust particles in the air can easily get settled in the lungs which may lead
to serious consequences in the future. That's the rea-son why it is insisted to do breathing exercises which could flush out all the tox-ins in the lungs and respira-tory system, says Sujatha, a local resident.
