On Thursday the 16th of March we saw the whole school band together
with crazy coloured hair to support Ray Thoroughgood, Dion Cray,
Tate Bruinsma, Kayden Malone and Kai McNally who were brave
enough to take part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest
Shave and raise much needed funds to support children’s cancer
research.
During recess the SRC held their annual Crazy Hair Kiosk where many
of the primary and some high school students donated $2 to have their
hair sprayed multi-colours in support of the boys.

After writing my piece for our last
newsletter I came across an article in
the Newcastle Post written by Senior
Constable Tony Tamplin. The article and
message hit a cord so much so I thought it
was worth providing a copy below. (The
Newcastle Post. Wednesday March 2013 Page

Year 6 moving into Year 7 in 2014
All parents of Year 6 students should have
received the Moving into Year 7 in a NSW
Government School in 2014: Information
Guide and Expression of Interest form for
parents and carers by now. If you haven’t
received a copy please contact the front office
to obtain a copy which will need to be
completed and returned as soon as possible.
Also available is a copy of the ‘Ready for High
School Checklist’. If you would like one please
also contact the office and we will send a copy
out.

Secondary students will be participating in the
Cross Country Carnival this Friday 22nd March.
The course will follow tracks on the other side
of the new highway around the base of Mt
Alum. Age races will commence shortly after
1pm and parents are most welcome. This is a
whole school carnival for Years 7-12.
We have had a number of students interested
in helping to raise money for a variety of
charities in the last few weeks. The school has
a proud record of supporting charities in such
things as Stewart House, Shave for a Cure,
Genes for Jeans day and others. Last year a
number of staff and students raised close to
$20000 to support cancer research through
Shave for a Cure, the Bike Challenge and other
events. Last Thursday several boys had their
heads shaved and a number of students had
their hair colour sprayed to raise money to
support research into child leukaemia. Close
to $1000 has been raised so far. Next week
on Tuesday 26th March a Year 12 class will be
promoting Happiness Day in a bid to raise
money for the Starlight Foundation. It is great
to see students take the initiative in raising
money for these worthy causes and thanks go
to parents for their support.
The SRC is currently organising a disco for
April 4th. This is for primary and secondary
students and a note will go out to parents
outlining the times and rules of our disco.
They have been a successful social event for
our students and with the help of staff and
parents ensuring students follow the rules
and have an enjoyable night we can look
forward to more successful discos in the
future.
Just a reminder regarding the guidelines for
the use of mobile phones and ipods at school.
Students may bring these items to school but
they must not interfere with classes or
student learning during lessons and should be
kept in students’ bags in class time. They
should also be used appropriately and
harassment or taking photos of other
students is prohibited. Students who fail to
follow directions in regard to phones will be
asked to take their phone to the Principal or
DP. If they fail to do this they may be placed
on a Planning Room detention and for
continued disobedience they may be
suspended from school. Please support your
child’s learning by making sure they follow
school guidelines are followed in relation to
mobile phones.

The MLC middle school sports day
was once again a successful day in
familiarising the Year 6 students, from our
partner schools, with BCS. It is also a great
opportunity for students to start to build new
friendships prior to their transition to high
school. The SRC did a fabulous job in
coordinating and running the day. This is
another example of leadership development
and excellence. I would like to thank Mrs
Guthrie and her SRC students for organising
the day.
The school’s Cross Country Carnival will be
held tomorrow, 20/3/13. All students turning
8 or older, this year, are expected to compete
in the carnival. Parents are always welcome.
We will need some volunteer parents to assist
on the course during the carnival. If you can
help out, we would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
One of the school’s most popular days is
nearly here again. Of course I’m referring to
the Easter Hat Parade. It is always eagerly
anticipated by students, staff and of course
parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. It
will be held on Thursday 28th March,
commencing at 12:15pm. So get the craft
glue out and start thinking about this year’s
creation. I am blown away, every year, by the
imagination and creative flair of our parents.
Of course you need to involve your child in
the creative process as that is part of the fun.
I look forward to seeing this year’s collection
of hats!
The P&C held their AGM, last week. We have
a small group of very committed parents who
attend these meetings. I would like to
congratulate the office bearers for 2013. One
of the positions which is still vacant is
fundraising coordinator. It is not a huge job
but just needs someone to coordinate and
oversee the 3 or 4 fundraisers that are held
annually. If you would like to contribute to
the school, in some way, then this could be
the job for you. It is not a huge inconvenience
and you would be making a worthwhile
contribution to the students of BCS. Please
see me if you can help out.
I mentioned in the last newsletter about the
prevalence of head lice at this time of the
year. If your child does contract head lice,
please carry out the appropriate treatment as
well as washing all bed linen, before sending
your child back to school. Tying long hair back
is also recommended in the prevention of
spreading lice from one student to another.
Thank you in anticipation of your cooperation
in this matter!
The “Careers Through Reading” program, in
conjunction with the University of Newcastle,
is going very well. The Year 1&2 students are
really enjoying their reading sessions with the
Uni students. This program will culminate
with a presentation of books to all Year 1&2
students on the 28th March.

It was wonderful to see buckets of watermelons and pumpkins delivered by the Years 3 & 4 children last Friday. Their faces were beaming with smiles as the older students gathered around them in the kitchen to see what they had, and their response "Can we cut one open". Cathryn said they were so excited to find them in the garden, running up to her with their arms full, like the Easter melon bunny had been and their curiosity of what the ‘purple funny looking things’ were eggplants. The Year 3 children loved making pasta for the first time, and I have promised them we will do it again, and again, and again, until they all have had a turn. I must say they were a bit concerned about the green sauce, until they tasted it, and as usual there was not a scrap left on their plates. With a wonderful harvest of lettuce, silver beet, sweet corn, eggplant, chilli, basil, watermelon & pumpkin the children created the following menus: Week 6 & 7 Menu Salad of the Imagination Creamy silver beet & sweet corn soup Eggplant & goats’ cheese fritters with chilli yoghurt Fresh bread rolls Pasta with basil sauce Pesto scrolls
Silver beet mini muffins Fresh watermelon Mulberry bomb cakes (from our food bank)
I have had a wonderful response from the community with a few new volunteers putting themselves in the pot to help. Your response has been amazing. But from the 4th of April till the end of Term 1, one of my wonderful volunteers, Mark, is going on his very well earned "long service leave" from kitchen classes. Mark will be greatly missed by the children and we eagerly await his return next term. So if there is any chance anyone can fill in and help on the dates below I would very much appreciate it.

Year 12 English Studies are planning an
awesome day of Happiness on Tuesday 26th
March, 2013. We are hoping that all students
at BCS will participate in this day and help
raise money to donate to the Starlight
Foundation.
Activities on the day will include a colouring
competition for primary students, a cake sale
at recess, a special moustache photo booth
and a group Happy Face photo on the top
oval.
Students are being asked to wear bright or
rainbow colours on the day to represent
happiness. A gold coin donation would be
appreciated from all students out of uniform.
Please get involved and
help The Starlight
Foundation to give sick
kids a brighter future.

An active school is a healthy school Friday 22 March 2013 marks the seventh National Ride2School Day. 140,000 Australian students are expected to ride, walk, scoot or skate to school, many for the first time.
Ride2School Day is about making active travel a normal part of the school day. There are many benefits to participating. Here are just a few:
Riding to school will reduce traffic around the school, making the school trip faster
Students will arrive at school alert and are more attentive in class
Riding helps develop important life skills, in addition to increasing confidence
We look forward to Bulahdelah Central joining in the fun and helping to encourage the school community to become healthier in the process.

Earth Hour – the phenomenon that was started in
Australia and embraced by the world – is returning at
8.30pm on 23 March.
Earth Hour is a gathering of the global community to
show what one simple idea can achieve, and what one
person’s actions can inspire.
Thanks to your support, it has become the largest
global movement for the environment. It is much,
much more than a symbolic action of switching off
lights for an hour; it’s a continuous movement driving
real actions, big and small, that are changing the
world we live in. From new legislation in the Russian
parliament to better protect seas from oil pollution, to
the initiation of two huge reforestation projects in
Africa – the impact of Earth Hour is widespread and
real.
In 2013, Australians are leading the world again. This
Earth Hour, we aren’t just switching off their lights as
a show of unity in protecting the planet. We’re taking
action into our own hands, and pledging to switch on
to renewable energy.
The reason – our planet is in serious need of our
help. As energy demands and carbon emissions
continue to rise, and the negative impacts of climate
change increase, we must stop burning fossil fuels to
meet our energy needs. And with electricity prices
skyrocketing, there’s never been a better time to
switch to clean, renewable energy.
The Mothers Day Stall will be held on Thursday
9th May. The P&C will be organising this stall and
would be grateful to any volunteers who may be
able to help out with sales to students on the day.
If you are able to spare a couple of hours, please
contact Adrienne Francis (Treasurer P&C) on
0409 985 299 or contact Sally Thompson, Deputy
Primary Principal on 49 974329.
