During construction site monitoring (01.06.2014 – 30.06.2014) have not been observed any
cases of accidental pollution on site location and at working points.
There is no oil products leaks on soil in the area of fuel deposit (Fig. 2.1.3), the possible
leakages from fuels manipulation are retained in the metallic cuvette of the fuel storage tank.
The wastes are selectively collected in the construction site area, taken then by the
sanitation company and transported towards the nearest wastes deposit. The used oils are
collected in plastic bins, taken by specialised companies for recycling.

2.2. Stage of 3D numerical modeling
Modeling activities have continued to establish ways to improve the application of Delft3D
model by local adjustments in the bottom sill area, given the measured data sets. The conducted
numerical simulations aimed to establish the necessary elements for the development and
recalibration of Delft3D model for current conditions, with a better substantiation based on
measurements from the period from autumn 2013 until the first half of 2014.
Calculations were performed with Delft3D model regarding the water flow parameters at
critical point 10, based on data from June. Completion of datasets for modeling continued by
processing the results of measurements carried out in June conditions.
2.2.1. Numerical simulations for Delft3D model aplication improvement, in actual
conditions in bottom sill area
An important part of the bottom sill effect on water flow parameters result using
calculation methods applied within Delft3D model and the additional structure option has a role of
completing the calculation of these effects.
Bottom sill effect on the water level was calculated with different Delft3D models and the
results were analyzed based on measured data sets. Simulations were conducted for local section
of the first part of Bala branch and used various vertical discretizations.
Measured datasets based on which the numerical simulations results were analyzed, refers
to situations with relatively low flows to an average, over 2500 m3/s Bala branch and below 4000
m3/s.
For data regarding the flows measured in March (situations marked with a and b) were used
recent data from May regarding riverbed configuration on local sector near the bottom sill. For
situations from previous months, with flow rates from the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014
(situations marked with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) has been used bathymetric data from December 2013.
Simulations carried out with Delft3D models sigma type, without structures option, shows
that in order to achieve more accurate results on water level differences between the ends of the
sector, it would be useful a very fine discretization.
With the structures option at the bottom sill and in old section, a usual Delft3D model
sigma type can be locally adjusted so as to provide better results regarding water levels. This is
shown by the results of simulations for the situations in March (a and b), in addition to the results
presented above for other studied cases. It is found that with finer vertical discretization and at
riverbed level (which however requires larger memory resources and increase the duration of
calculation), the necessary adjustment of the model through structures option can be reduced.
This adjustment remains necessary to obtain calculated levels upstream and downstream near
those highlighted by measurements. Otherwise, there is a need for other local changes in the
model in order to obtain adequate levels.

Figura 2.2.2 – Relative differences between the water levels at the ends of sector with bottom sill on
Bala branch, results at average flows with Delft3D model sigma type, with structures option at the sill and old section
Placing the structures in slightly different positions within the grid has a very little
influence on the results of water levels upstream and downstream from the bottom sill.
Considering that for the riverbed roughness representation may occur changes, in order to
make local adjustments of the model, have been taken into account also different roughness
values on the analyzed section. It is found that the effects of usual roughness modification are

practically separate from those of structures option.
Numerical simulations performed with Delft3D models of z type, with horizontal layers,
without structures option, revealed that in order to get more accurate results regarding water
levels would be useful a finer discretization.

Using additional option of structures at the bottom sill and at old section, the results show
that an usual Delft3D model of z type can be adjusted locally in order to provide more accurate
results on water levels in different situation.

for a relatively low water flow, differences in water levels at the ends of the sector that are
similar with those obtained with Z hydrostatic models.

2.2.2. Simulation with Delft3D model for water flow parameters in critical
point 10, in flow conditions from June
Simultation results with Delft3D model have indicated a flow percentage value on Danube
slightly lower than flow percentage on Caleia branch, the two values being relatively close.
This situation is similar to those previously observed, showing that the works performed at
the critical point 10 had significant effects in terms of flow distribution balancing on Danube
compared to Caleia branch.
Velocities distributions obtained by numerical simulation in critical point 10 area, upstream
from the entrance on Danube sector near Caleia branch, indicates values usually found on other
sectors of the Danube.
The distribution of calculated velocities in a section upstream from Caleia branch highlights
the effects due to water flow towards the two sides of the island and respectively the flow
influence on Valciu branch. The values distribution is similar to that obtained based on velocities
and flow measurement through a very close section. The measured values contain also fluctuations
due to water flow turbulence.

2.2.3. Completing the data for modeling
Processing activities for data measured on Danube and preparing the data sets and files in
a usable form for modeling have included the following:
Preparing the data for each section, regarding flow and velocity distributions
measured in main critical points areas.
Preparing the data sets for measured cross-sections representation and those
regarding bathimetric measurements on various trails for the riverbed.
Preparing the data sets for water flow and level in main critical points areas.
These activities have been performed based on analysis of the data measured by INCDPM, in
correlation with daily hydrological data.

6. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS, WARNINGS
5.1 This Monthly Report reflects the monitoring activities in June 2014.
5.2 For the specific monitoring objectives within this phase, the Provider respects the field and
laboratory activities, logistics and infrastructure be made according to the graphics and
stipulations mentioned in the Specifications.
5.3 Taking into consideration the importance of the construction works that take place on
Danube, on the section between Calarasi and Braila, the Consortium recommends further
actions on biodiversity monitoring, with the frequency related with the post-construction
stage, up to end of the project, in order to ensure an informational volume, with a high
confidence level, to allow if necessary, the development of preventive solutions.
5.4 ADCP measurements performed in June in Bala branch area confirmed the phenomenon of
erosion pit expansion, developed behind the bottom sill, to the right bank (phenomenon
shown by the bathymetric monitorings in previous months and especially by multi-beam
measurements made in May).
Irregular geometry of the riverbed and bottom sill leads to the occurrence of strong vortices
that cause problems to navigation in bottom sill area. At the same time, ADCP measurements
in the bottom sill area highlight the high water velocities.
5.5 Regarding sturgeons situation, we specify that during May were recorded three starry
sturgeon specimens that swim against the current over the new bottom sill built on Bala
branch. So far, our researches have not noticed problems regarding migration or for the
possibility to swim over the hydrotechnical construction.
5.6 Bala branch medium flows calculated at the time of passing of the three specimens of starry
sturgeon were:
- 5300 m3/s on 18.05.2014, for starry sturgeon with code 7S47;
- 5650 m3/s on 20.05.2014, for starry sturgeon with code 7S43;
- 5780 m3/s on 26.06.2014, for starry sturgeon with code 7S22bis.
Figures bellow presents migration maps for those 3 starry sturgeons:
