MOPS Is Coming to First Lutheran

MOPS is an international Christian nonprofit organization that believes in the simple but revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when moms come together face to face. MOPS is a place where moms can gather and support one another through the, often difficult, journey of motherhood. With the support of each other and Jesus, mothers can do anything! Expectant mothers through mothers of high schoolers are welcome to join First

Lutheran’s MOPS. We will meet the second and fourth Saturdays of the month starting November 9th. Meetings will be held from 2-4:30 in the Fireside Room. Childcare will be provided. Join us for an introduction to MOPS on our first Saturday, November 9th, to see if you’d like to join as a member. Please sign up on the opportunity sheets in church or flccs.net so we can have a head count of those coming. Treats will be provided! If you have any questions, please reach out to Tasha Friedell, 719.650.1857, or Amanda Goff, 719.287.6263.

“I’ve had the best experiences with MOPS. It has supported me in growing my faith, developing friend-ships and confidence in my parenting.”

“For 45 years, MOPS International has used the common experience of motherhood to create opportunities for women and their families to encounter Jesus. Your faithful support of this Ministry allows us to remind women that they are not alone, that motherhood is significant and that Jesus calls them beloved. In addition, we give them the tools they need to thrive so that they feel equipped to raise the next generation in Christ’s name. “

Mandy Arioto, President & CEO of MOPS International

“MOPS has given me a network of believers who all desire the same common goals as mothers, part-ners and Christians.”

WHAT THEIR MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT MOPS:

“I love being available as a MOPS mentor to pray with and encourage MOPS moms. The MOPS Minis-try is effective in touching so many lives with the love of Christ!”

He will donate all of the Ve-netian blinds throughout the house and the stair carpets on both stairways. November Sunday Adult Seminar Schedule

November 10 Christian Olive Wood Project - Micheal Zoughbi

The Christian Olivewood Project is a coop-erative of 48 families, led by Micheal Zoughbi. Micheal was born and raised in Bethlehem and is part of the dwindling Palestinian Christian population of that region. Mi-chael visits the United States to remind people of the plight of the minority Chris-tian community in the Holy Land, and to help his people by the selling of their olive wood carvings. Following the seminar be sure to visit the Mission Marketplace in the Gathering Place where many of these carv-ings will be available for purchase.

November 17 Identity Theft By the time it takes to read this announce-ment, nearly 30 people will become victims of identity fraud. The fact is every 2 sec-onds, someone in the U.S. becomes a victim of identity fraud. If your identity is stolen, it puts your finances and credit rating at risk. And that’s just the beginning! Don’t become a statistic. Come learn how you can protect yourself. This class was developed by Thrivent Financial to help participants learn how identity theft can occur, how to take steps to prevent it and what to do if your identity is stolen. Cheryl Mahon will lead the discussion.

FROM THE PASTOR

They walked into my office and shared their intention to give one million dollars to the Rekindle the Gift campaign to renovate the Peel House! I was speechless. They smiled. Members of the congregation, who wish to remain anonymous, love this church and its people and believe in this work to bring the old Jewett mansion back to life. They want this gift to be used to inspire the whole congregation to contribute. They shared with me their hope that the gift would lead to others being generous and getting involved with the campaign. We held a gathering for some members of the congregation who we thought might be willing to give a lead gift to create some momentum for the whole congregation. I stood and shared with them the announcement of the one million dollar gift and it brought me such joy to see their reaction. Gasps, tears and applause. I asked this group if they’d consider giving to the campaign to inspire others as they had been inspired. They have. The commitments have been pouring in. By the time you receive this Ekklesia we will have announced a total at the congregational dinner on Thursday, November 7th. I hope you’ve made plans to attend, so you can be in the room when we share what has already been committed to the Rekindle the Gift campaign. I’m humbled by the generosity of our members and your capacity to love and inspire each other. This campaign has already exceeded my expec-tations, and we aren’t even halfway finished. On November 17th we will all bring our statements of intent to worship and present them to the

Lord. These will include two commitments. Our commitment to the annual ministry of First Lutheran and our commitment to the Three Year Rekindle the Gift campaign. Then on De-cember 8th, we will share the total committed and celebrate what God has done. Thank you for considering your part in both our annual stewardship and the Rekindle the Gift campaign. What a privilege and joy it is to be part of God’s work here at First Lutheran! -Pastor Travis

Unique hand-crafted items will be available for purchase in the Gathering Place following Sunday morning services beginning Sunday, November 10 and continuing through Sunday, November 24. Items will also be available weekdays during office hours.

Communications Staff Update

Our full time graphic arts person, Bob Rodgers, has submitted his resignation. His last day was Friday, November 1. He has graciously agreed to help train future hires and help out on a free-lance basis with any graphic arts needs. Alt-hough it was short, we are grateful for his time with us. After much conversation we have decided to reorganize our communications department, shifting responsibilities and hours to cover the changing needs of our congregation. Here is the plan: • Theresa McConnell will add the weekly e-mail, bulletin covers and other graphic art needs to her portfolio. She currently leads in the areas of web design, social media and photography. Her hours will be increased to 35. • Chris Parkhill will add the opportunity

sheets and bulletin announcement sheet to her portfolio. She currently creates the Ekklesia newsletter.

• We will hire a new person at 25 hours per week to do all worship bulletins, including weekend services, funerals and weddings. This person will also create programs for various functions throughout the year and other booklet type publications. We are

currently interviewing for this position; other staff will cover the responsibilities until a new hire is made. Overall this is a reduction in the cost to the church for communications, but we feel it will improve our workflow and output. The goal is to help the congregation worship the Lord and stay informed about ministry opportunities. As a reminder, deadlines for all material to be publicized through church channels is Friday the week before printing. Earlier is always better! -Pastor Travis

Theatre Group The Sound of Music

Ti When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she’s dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern captain, and they marry. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. Please sign up and pay at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Place at First Lutheran beginning Sunday, November 10. Deadline for signing up is Sunday, December 15.

Book Discussion Group

Selection to read: Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery; the classic coming-of-age tale of Anne Shirley, originally published in 1908. It is a sentimental and charming story we’ve proba-bly all read when we were much, much younger. Set in the fictional Canadian town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, this story of a spirited and unconventional little girl will win your heart and make you smile. Book selections for next year to be determined.

Senior High Retreat Theme: Fully Known Rainbow Trail, November 22-24 Cost: $100 Understanding ourselves helps us understand one another. Join in a weekend of exploring who you are in a community that trusts we are all created and beloved as God’s children- no exceptions. We will explore the personality tools of the Enneagram and Meyer’s Brigg’s Type Indicator (MBTI). These will be used to deepen our self-awareness and how we can grow deeper in our relationships with God and one another. All of this takes place in the context of the beauty of God’s creation at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. Trusting God fully knows us and loves us, we get to be courageous and vulnerable as we learn, play, sing, dance and celebrate. This promises to be a fantastic weekend of finding out more about what make us tick. It also promises lots of fun and relaxation with time spent away from the rush of our regular schedules! If you are interested in attending please contact Pastor Carrie to register at [email protected].
