by KatPreparationsWe set out their clothes, make their breakfast, and tidy the house so that our children can start the day off well.But there is an even more important preparation we need to make before the day begins.We need to prepare the day for them. To pave the way in prayer. To prepare our hearts and attitudes to welcome them to a day full of potential.They take their cues from us. If we wake up late and grumpy, there’s a good chance they’ll be grumpy. If we greet them with a smile and hope for the day, there’s a good chance they’ll be hopeful and happy too.We don’t need to wake up 2 hours early. 5 minutes will do wonders. Just a focused window of prayer, thanksgiving and a little “pep talk” from the Coach before the “game” begins.I love to meet the day before sunrise (or kid-rise or husband-rise). In the early morning, It’s a truly blank canvas. The day laid out in all it’s vastness – full of possibility.

3 Steps For Preparing The Day For Your Family1. Start With A Grateful HeartI’m not always chipper in the morning. I don’t always feel like praying. It’s amazing how much my attitude changes after just a minute of thanking the Lord for all the wonderful blessings He’s given me.2. Focused Prayer for Each PersonI use a calendar to pray for my husband and another calendar to pray for my children. In the fog of the early morning or the rush of a late morning, they give me direction and focus as I pray for my family.3. WorshipOne of my favorite songs to listen to in the morning is by Christy Nockels and it’s called Invade. I’m pretty sure Christy could sing Father Abraham 128,897,979 times in a row and I think I’d soak in every single repetitive note. She has such a gorgeous voice. Combine that voice with these amazing lyrics and that makes for a wonderful morning anthem. Jesus, come and walk the halls of this house Tread this place and turn it inside out With Your mercy… Jesus, teach us the prayers that open these doors Until Your light floods in and illuminates these floors And let Your truth be on our steps and in these rooms Jesus invade…Welcoming Our Children to TodayWhat an honor we have as moms to greet our children with all the hope of a fresh, brand new day.Today could be one of the best days of our entire lives.Today could be the day our patience overtakes our impatience – for good.Today could be a day we make memories our children will laugh and talk about for 50 years.Today could be a day God uses us to change someone’s life – forever.Let’s take seriously our opportunity to prepare our children for the wonders of Today.

How to Prepare the Day for Our Children


•Krista Fitzwater is due on November 28th with a little girl.

•Bobbie Kite is due on October 18th with a little girl.

Anticipated Arrivals

•Mason Daniel Mikel was born on July 19 to Dan and Eryn Mikel. He was 8 lbs and 9 oz and 21 inches long. Spencer is the proud older brother.

•Cody and Memoree welcomed Saylor Elizabeth Barrett into their family on September 17. She was 7 lbs 10 oz and 21 inches long. Big brothers are Jax and Beau.

Newest MOPPETS

Meet us at 10 am on Friday, October 15 at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church - 7702 Indiana. Please park on the southeast side of the building. Kids are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes! We will show off our carved pumpkins then head off to Kastman Park for a sack lunch. Please bring your own lunches and your already carved pumpkins. The pumpkins will be displayded in the Pumpkin Trail October 21 - 24.

Pumpkin Trail Family EventCome at 6:00pm on Thursday, October 21 to the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum on 40th and University. Pack a picnic for your family and enjoy it together then you can walk the Pumpkin Trail to see all the pumpkins you and

your fellow MOPS families decorated the week before.

Speaker InformationHere is an interview with our October speaker, Julia Gill.

Question: Tell us about your family.Answer: I have been married to Stan Gill for 37 years. We have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

Question: How did you get interested in decorating?Answer: I started decorating by constantly rearranging my room when I was growing up. Throughout my married life and time as a stay at home mom I remodeled many rooms in our homes. As friends would see what I had done they would ask if I would help them to do theirs. A large part of my creating came from working with Children’s Choir and producing large sets for the musicals. Most of my inspiration came directly from working with my children and what they were interested in. As my mother-in-law put it “You make a production of whatever you are doing!” Whether it is one of the kids’ birthday parties or their end of school party or their new bedroom. I guess that is my whole philosophy--whatsoever you do in word or deed do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. All this is the background for where I am today. JMG Designs officially became a design business 12 years ago. Around Christmas it has been said that if you stand still long enough I will decorate you with a bow. A large part of my designing is revealed at Christmastime. I love the holidays and all they represent; most importantly the birth of my Lord and Savior. I go all out at this time of year because that is what I do for people I love!

Question: What is the most fun thing for you to decorate?Answer: The most fun project I have worked on was a local home where the client gave me full liberty to design everything from the handpainted furniture to the use of an antique bed footboard hung in the dining room as a display piece for her teacup collection. When I would arrive home there would be a message on my answering machine where she would go on and on about how she loved what I had done. You see, everything I do is about relationships. I love to make others homes a

beautiful refuge where they can feel love and beauty in their surroundings.

Question: What do you enjoy most about decorating?Answer: I love decorating because it gives me the freedom to be who God created me to be. I love it when I am working on a project and God gives me a unique idea and I know it has nothing to do with me but is totally His. This assures me that I am right where He wants me.

Question: What are your secret tips?Answer: When you start a project, always begin with an inspiration piece. It can be a picture, a color, a book or just about anything. You just have to love it! It needs to make you feel good when you think about it. Then as you develop your project always see if there are ways you can incorporate pulling your inspiration piece together with its surroundings.

Question: What is your best budget friendly tip?Answer: Always check the Dollar Store. You might be surprised what you find, but be selective! Spend a little more on a focal piece and add in fillers that are from a budget retailer.

What your MOPPETS are learning this monthThis month your kiddos will be learning about Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” They will be singing a forgiving song, making and decorating bracelets, taking rides in the buggies, playing on the playground, and playing games to go along with the theme. Be sure to ask them what they learned!

Explain that a good scientist knows how to describe things and make guesses based on their senses. In this experiment they will be using their sense of touch. Gather some items and put in a

paper bag or box with a lid. Some items could include a cotton ball, a twig, a sponge, a rock, a ring, an M&M, a spoon or any other thing you can fit into a bag. Blindfold your child and have them reach one hand into the bag and choose an item. Have them describe the item to you. (You can record their observations to make it more scientific.) After they describe the item they should try to guess what it is. When they have described and guessed at all the items in the bag, take the blindfold off and let them check to see how many they got correct. They might also like to try this experiment on you.

One book I consider a must-read for moms is Creative Correction by

Lisa Whelchel. It is one of the few books that I read a couple of times a year to refresh my memory. Lisa gives readers a peek into the corrections that she has used with her own children.

This book is filled with ideas to correct negative behavior in ways that speak to the heart of the child. She uses Scripture to teach her children why their behavior is inappropriate and how to change it. Besides being a treasure trove of super-creative and Biblically sound ideas to train the hearts and hands of our little ones, Creative Correction is a hoot! Lisa gives a frank and open look at her own trials of motherhood. It is not a book that makes you feel like a failure as a mother because your children aren’t perfect.

While a majority of the corrections would be more suited to elementary age kids, there is a toddler section with ideas to help us in this season of life too. I recommend you grab a copy today!

We are so excited to announce a new Bunco group for MOPS moms! If you have never heard of Bunco, here are some of the basics...

It is a dice game you play with 12 people. Each person hosts the game at their house 1 time a year. You meet 1 night a month (with the night to be decided by those who want to play). You can sign up to be a member of the group or to be a substitute. Substitutes will be called upon to join the game when a group member has to miss. (Substitutes would not be responsible for hosting at their house.)

I have never heard of someone who was in a Bunco group that did not absolutely LOVE it!

Don’t miss the Trunk-or-Treat at Southcrest on Saturday, October 30th from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Come to the West parking lot to gather all the candy your children can handle. There will also be a snack bar where you can purchase drinks, hot dogs, and cotton candy. Look for the jumping castles for the kiddos.
