The Typhoon IR Decoy is used for the selfdefence of the Typhoon military aircraftagainst infrared-seeking missiles whilst inflight.
The IR Decoy is carried in the FRL Typhoon IR Decoydispenser. When ejected, the flare emits infrared radiationwhich decoys IR missiles away from the host aircraft.
Each Typhoon IR Decoy contains an electrically initiated flareassembly. The flare assembly is ejected from the IR Decoycase which remains with the aircraft. An exceptionally highenergy output from the emitting pyrotechnic compositionscontained in the flare assembly provides the decoy infraredheat source. The IR Decoy is provided with an identificationcircuit that allows the dispensing system to identify the flaretype fitted.
