Disaster Relief Trip to W. Virginia
From April 30 to May 6, five people from Muddy Creek joined 43 other peo-ple from Lutheran churches in Lancas-ter County (and also Camp Hill, Cham-bersburg and Lebanon) on a Disaster Relief Mission Trip to Webster County, West Virginia. A year ago, on June 23, 2016, a storm system stalled over West Virginia, un-leashing torrential rains upon ground that was already saturated from rainfall over the previous few days. On that day in June, ten inches of rain fell in 12 hours, com-pleting overwhelming streams and rivers and causing severe devastating floods. Twenty-three peo-ple died in south central West Virginia in one of the deadliest floods in West Virginia history. Hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed. Our disaster relief group, organized by Pastor Glenn Beard for the North Lan-caster Lutheran Churches Conference and our Lutheran Synod, descended upon the town of Webster Springs, West Virginia for seven days in the be-ginning of May. The group included many veterans of these yearly mission trips, as well as newcomers. From Muddy Creek, Connie Becker, Patti Weaver, Fred Hainley, Brenda Berger and Pastor Peter went. We slept and ate in a Baptist Church in Webster Springs which generously hosted us, and we showered there and in a nearby Thrift Store that also graciously let us use their facilities. Every day, we drove half an hour to two worksites. In the town of Camden-on-Gauley (the Gauley River was one
From the Pastors
of the rivers that severely flooded), Connie and others worked on a large crew that completely renovat-ed a house for a mother and her two young children. Meanwhile, near the town of Cowen at the conflu-ence of the Gauley and Williams rivers, Brenda helped replace an outside deck, while Fred, Patti, and Pastor Peter insulated, put in new flooring, dry-walled, “taped” and “mudded” in a house that had been
flooded with four and a half feet of water and had to be completely gutted down to the studs. The woman who owned the
house, her adult son and daughter-in-law had all been living in two small trailers since last June. While wait-ing for over ten months for her house to be repaired, she began to be despondent. But a friend told us that her mood completely changed when our mission group arrived. She smiled and laughed and told us all about her plans as the rooms of her house began to take shape and be restored. Bringing hope to those suffering
from disasters is indeed holy work, and we were privileged to be part of that. Please consider joining us on
future mission trips, or consider coming along to the GAIN Ware-house this coming June 24 to pack
clothing for refugees in Syria and other countries. As the motto of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (of which we are a part) says, “God’s work – our hands!”
