Moghrey Mie, Kia ora, March 1st is a very important date in the school year. From this date the Ministry of Education takes an audit of every schools roll and confirms its staffing and operational grant funding for the coming year. I am pleased to say that our confirmed roll for March 1st is 155 students. This compares to 138 at this stage last year. I am also aware that we have at least 15 further New Entrant students turning five within the school year and some strong indications of additional families moving into our community. This is great news for our kura and will allow myself and the Board of Trustees to continue to plan for expansion of space, facilities and staff. At the start of each New Year, I am always aware of students and families having to buy new school uniform as children grow or join our kura. We have a huge amount of school uniform available at our school via the office if you are missing some items. Please, just come into school and ask our office staff and they will be delighted to help you see if we have the correct size item for you at no cost at all. I have had a couple of families contact me to say The Warehouse in Richmond does not have various items in stock. Can you please let me know if this is the case as I can then contact a lady called Yvonne at The Warehouse who promises me she can source any item within three weeks. This week has seen our first couple of cold nights and the uniform the next day has been a little inconsistent. I spoke in assembly on Wednesday to our younger students about naming their items of uniform and checking if they had items as we have already had an amount of brand new lost property handed in. Today we have a group of 16 students from Tutaki, Matakitaki and Maruia classes taking part in the Buller Swimming Competition in Westport. I wish them well and hope to be able to inform you of success next week. Our school swimming sports has been moved from March 6th to December 3rd, to align with the Buller and West Coast events and allow for more practice time for our students. On Thursday we saw our first Student Council meeting of 2019 with new students and new items of discussion. I will be asking the Student Council to publish a regular update in our school newsletters. This year we have expanded the Student Council to also include Year 5 and 6 students to further represent the wider school student population. Our Senior Area School Tournament Team was announced this week and a photo of the team and more information will follow shortly as they get presented at our next whole school assembly. Preparations for Collingwood in week 10 (31st March to 5th April) continue at a rapid pace. Finally I return to the item concerning school camps for 2020. School camps will not be taking place in Term 4 of this year (2019) but instead in Term 1 2020 for the reasons outlined in last weeks newsletter. However I reiterate the appeal for parents, if they are able, to set up a regular or weekly amount to be paid into an account here at school to pre pay for these events. $5 a week will cover the entire cost for 2020. Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) Every year our students are given learning opportunities which take them out of our school boundaries. In order for us to comply with Ministry of Education requirements for all trips and events, known as EOTC events, there are certain procedures and systems that we need to put in place. Often these systems may seem overly complicated and pedantic and some may even consider parts of them unnecessary. We accept this but at the same time these are required of us and we cannot fault the intention behind them, which is ultimately to keep your children as safe as possible whilst they are in our care.
To this end we have sent home (with your children) some forms for you to check, update, sign and return, which will be valid for the entire 2019 school year. We cannot take your child on any trip beyond our school gates until they are completed and returned. The forms cover a blanket parental consent (which covers low risk trips within our local Murchison area), and an update of medical and emergency contact information for 2019.
School trips add an element of learning that cannot be achieved in a classroom. It is our job to allow your children to have those positive experiences, in as safe a way as possible, without letting the paperwork get in the way. Your cooperation and understanding is much appreciated. If you have any questions about the information required or wish to speak to me about specific requirements your child may have which we should be aware of, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Congratulations Harmonie! Huge congratulations to Harmonie Whitnall, who took part in the South Island Interschool's Polo competition at Canterbury Park last Friday. Harmonie teamed up with Riley McDonald from Otago and together they won the competition out of a record 24 pairs! A fantastic effort Harmonie!

School Camps 2019 and 2020 Update
Summary of information in Principal’s Section of last weeks newsletter.
♦ School Camps will not run in Term 4 of 2019.
♦ School Camps will now run in Term 1 of each year starting in 2020.
♦ The major reasons for this are educational, re team building, pre work, camp work and post camp work.
♦ Maximum cost of any school camp will be $250 (hopefully less).
♦ No child will miss out on a camp for financial reasons.
♦ We strongly encourage parents and families to pay $5 a week into a school account to fully fund these
camps and take any fundraising/financial issues away.
♦ I welcome any feedback and clarification regarding any of the above points.

* you are a visitor to the school
THEN you must call into the office first and sign in or out. Likewise, if normal bus arrangements change, can
you please no#fy the office to avoid any delays in loca#ng students who would normally catch the bus, but do
not turn up at 3pm to catch the bus home.
In the event of an emergency, we need to know where our students are at all #mes during school hours. We
also need to know who is visi#ng our school.

It’s that time of year again….
With the warmer weather here, we are once again implementing our NO HAT, NO PLAY rule. This is for ALL STUDENTS. Year 7 to 13 students must wear a hat that provides sun protection. There are three different styles of school sunhat available from The Warehouse in Richmond:- ∗ A cap with our logo; ∗ A bucket hat with our logo, and ∗ A plain navy wide brim hat.
ABSOLUTE WILDERNESS ADVENTURE RACE A HUGE congratulations must go to Abby, Luke A, Caleb T and Ben who all competed in the Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race in Twizel last weekend. Abby, Luke and Caleb entered the 3 hour team event (run/raft 14km, mountain bike 19km, trek 5km) and came 3rd in their category! Ben competed in the 6 hour team event (run/raft 14km, mountain bike 13km, trek 6km, mountain bike 17km) with two other athletes who have competed in the Godzone race, and he learned heaps, coped with a team mechanical failure, and finished in an excellent time of 6hrs 15mins. What an amazing effort - we are all very proud of you! And well done to their families and supporters who put in the hard yards behind the scenes to provide these great young people with this opportunity. (Thanks Emma for the photos.)
