P r i n c e s s N u n a k a w a w a s a legendary shaman priestess who ruled Itoigawa in ancient times. Her story is recorded in the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest known historical record. Said to be both beautiful and wise , she has long been worshipped as a patron goddess of I to igawa. The statue here depicts her looking across the sea toward Izumo, the home of her husband Okuninushi . Bes ide her is their son Takeminakata, who

The train melody for Itoigawa Station is “Haru Yo, K o i , ” a w e l l - k n o w n children’s song. Its lyrics were written by Gyofū Souma, an Itoigawa-born poet, writer, and scholar. His home is preserved here as it was when he lived in it and is an excellent example of t radi t ional Japanese townhouse architecture.

Niigata Prefecture is the ‘jizake’ (local sake) capital of Japan and Itoigawa is no exception. The town is home to five jizake breweries, two of which work their craft within walking distance from the station. Ikedaya Brewery resides in a charming old building and serves up excellent sake! Kaga-no-I Brewery, recently rebuilt after the 2016 Itoigawa Station North Fire, is one of Niigata’s oldest breweries. Windows allow you to see it in action!

⑦・⑧・⑨ The Salt Trail - ‘Shio no Michi’ The Salt Trail was an important trading route between the provinces of Echigo (Niigata) and Shinshū (Nagano). Salt has long been important for preserving food, so this trade route stayed open even while these two provinces warred against each other; closing the trail would have starved the people of Shinshū. The Salt Trail began along Hakuba-dōri and several landmarks related to the Salt Trail can be seen nearby.

⑤・⑥ Gangi-dōri and the Kaga Highway Gangi are the special roofs that cover the sidewalks around Itoigawa Station. They are unique to Japan’s “Snow Country” regions and were built to shelter travelers from the heavy snowfalls common to this region. The can be found along Honchō-dōri, Miichan-dōri and Ha- kuba-dōri. Honchō-dōri forms part of the old Kaga Highway which connected Kanazawa to Edo.

Stones of Itoigawa ★Princess Nunakawa ◆

●Jade Road Art A massive fault splits Japan between two cont inental p lates beneath Itoigawa, giving Itoigawa a wealth of stones and minerals. Four of these stones are displayed on fire hydrant covers in front of Itoigawa Station. Even more can be seen at Kaibo Park!

Discover the many stones of Itoigawa as you make your way to and from the sea.

A statue of Princess Nunakawa stands in front of Itoigawa Station. Be sure to keep an eye out for the jade and magatama-themed artwork lining the streets.
