About SGCCRI, ThakurpukurWhen there were only about 5 dedicated Cancer hospitals in India, Dr Saroj Gupta a young Oncologist trained in India and UK, saw the plight of Cancer patients traveling all the way from remote areas. He decided to set up a ̀ Home away from Home` in the lap of nature to give shelter to these patients and give some basic care. In 1973 getting six acres of land from one of his patients he formed a society with some like minded people. To raise funds he wrote & enacted a drama. Soon a 25 bed dormitory was set up to take care of patients by doctors & nurses. Soon many well wishers, Celebrities, Industrialists, School Children & even daily wage earners joined hands to make this home a fully comprehensive modern Cancer Hospital. With the help of voluntary services by many eminent doctors, it has become one of the largest dedicated cancer hospital with 311 beds spread over 16 acres with soothing landscapes, water bodies, amusement parks, toy trains etc. Now it is a modern diagnostic & Treatment unit with facilities like Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant, Modern Radiotherapy machines, State of the art surgical facilities, Molecular & Scientic Research Unit and a Unique Palliative Care unit. The Centre has not deviated from its philosophy of serving the under privileged people. This Centre runs on donation & Cross subsidy model.
Kolkata - The City of JoyKolkata, the city of joy as it is often called, is also commonly considered as the 'Paris of the East' as there's a happy amalgamation of different culture, style, mood and politics. It mainly gained importance in the times of British rule as it had been the capital of India till the year1912. Calcutta (as it was known before 2001) is the best example of both the old and new, the orient and the occident, the gourmet and the intellect and is the home to five best Nobel laureates - Rabindranath Tagore, Ronald Ross, Mother Teresa, Amartya Sen & C. V. Raman.
Kolkata has signicant traditional architectural national heritage and famous for greenery of Gangetic planes, Belur Math, ISKCON Headquarters, Victoria Memorial, Mother Teresa's Home, Indian Museum, Kalighat Temple, Fortwilliam, Swami Vivekananda's residence, Howrah Bridge, Sunderbans, Shantiniketan and many more.
However, it is the Durga Puja in autumn each year during which Kolkata is at its best and the most resplendent. Irrespective of where you are from, you will feel at home in this city - in Kolkata.
