NARRATIVE / CREATIVE WRITING
Planning and Structure
What is a narrative? It is (usually) a made up story that allows the author to share their imagination, creativity and skills.
What is the purpose of it? Its purpose is to tell the reader/s a story. It is written mainly to entertain, but can also motive or educate.
This means that a good narrative is one that captivates the audience and keeps them engaged and entertained as they are reading.
How to plan a narrative: Think of and try to answer the 5Ws and H:
● Who● What● When● Where● Why● How
How to structure a narrative:1. Introduction2. Build-up3. Problem4. Solution5. Conclusion
Introduction
- Introduce your characters
- Establish the setting

Build Up
- What are the events that lead up to the problem/climax?
-
Problem/Climax
- What happens when the characters are confronted by the problem?
- Why is the problem a problem?
Solution
- How do the characters go about solving their problem or getting out of the situation?
Conclusion
- What do the characters do after the problem is resolved?
- Is the problem actually completely solved?
- Is it possible for the problem to happen again?
- Will there be a cliff hanger?
Note: these questions are for you to think about; you do not need to necessarily answer every question in your creative.
Remember the stages of writing:
1. Planning
2. Gathering/organising
3. Composing/drafting
4. Revising/editing
5. Proof reading
