Neil Pinkett was born in St Just on the very tip of Cornwall. It is a dramatic place to live with a narrow peninsula being surrounded on three sides by the sea, causing constantly changing skies with squalls coming in off the ocean often followed by the sun suddenly breaking through. It is these fleeting light effects that have inspired this collection of paintings at Hilton Fine Art.
Pinkett works with a very limited palette which provides his beautiful trademark, highly orchestrated purpley / green / grey paintings. The works are painted up from sketches done on the spot, working on an impasto ground that has the complementary final colours on it. This gives the pictures vitality and gives Pinkett something to work against, incorporating the chance element. The pictures are attacked with great energy, mostly using the palette knife and with the atmosphere and feel of the light and movement of that particular time of day being as important as the descriptive elements of the scene.
Much emphasis is put on the abstraction in the figuration. Greys are repeated thoughout the pictures and Pinkett delights in the formal structure of the painting, for example, placing a colour on the major diagonal of the golden section of the composition.
