Have Thine Own
Way Lord
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old
self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude
of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteous-
ness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
New Beginnings With the coming of a new year each of us has the opportunity for a new
beginning! Our lives in Christ are defined by new beginnings. Ultimately it was Christ
who was responsible for each person to be made right with God and raising us up from
a life of sin, which would have led to our death. In Christ we are given a clean slate.
As we end one year and begin another I would encourage you to look at your
faith walk and prayerfully consider where you have fallen short in the last twelve
months. Maybe you haven’t read your Bible or prayed as much as you should have.
There may be broken relationships where you have not sought reconciliation. The truth
is that each of us has had our issues in this last calendar year. In the new year let us all
resolve to work on one or more of our issues as we get this chance to start anew.
Below are the Sermon Titles and Scriptures for my messages in January. I
encourage you to take a few minutes on Saturday evening or Sunday morning each
week and read the scripture for the coming Sunday message and see where the Holy
Spirit leads you.
1/7/18 “Living Into God’s Future” Matthew 28:16-20
1/14/18 “Life in the Valley – The Valley of Questions” Matthew 26:36-46
& Romans 8:28
1/21/1 “Life in the Valley – The Valley of Disappointment”
Matthew 26:25-35a, John 21:7 & 2 Corinthians 7:10
1/28/18 “Life in the Valley – The Valley of Loneliness” Matthew 26:48-56,
Romans 8:15-16, & Psalm 142:4
I hope and pray that you have a blessed New Year as we continue to
journey with each other and with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
In Christ,
Pastor Jared
Happy New Year from the 7th Day Youth Crew !
It’s a busy time with so much packed into our schedule. On November 11 we participated in Project
Rise and set up, assembled and packaged over 20,000 pre-made meals which will be going to Mada-
gascar. Then we went to Oglebay, West Virginia to see the Christmas lights and had a great time. On
November 12, we were honored to serve the Over 80 Luncheon at church.
We had the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on November 18 and were blessed with the turn out! So much
love was shown for the youth and they all worked so hard. We raised over $1,000 and we have
initially used those funds to adopt a family for Christmas. The youth was given a family with four
children and shopped and wrapped clothing and toys for each child.
On December 10, we visited a Live Nativity and the youth enjoyed and learned from the opportu-
nity. We love all of these opportunities of fellowship and serving. The youth will be on a break due to
the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve holidays. We will begin again Sunday January 10, 2018. We
would love to have visitors join us! -Kelli Law
GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FROM THE BEGINNING by Leland Spencer Jr.
Chapter One
Several members have asked me about history of Grace Church. So, I decided to start way back in the original
beginning. I mean waaay back. We will start from a program of the 60th Anniversary of Grace Evangelical
Church, whom we came from in 1961.
Jacob Albright, a godly minister of the Gospel in the state of Pennsylvania, founded the Evangelical Associa-
tion and we are proud to consider ourselves followers of this disciple of God. The trials and tribulations en-
countered in the building of our denomination parallel those of the early church, but we are glad that our firm
foundation has anchored us to the Christian way and we can truthfully say that we believe as our forefathers in
a true God with emphasis upon conversion and inward change of heart.
Grace Evangelical Church was established in March 1885, by direction of the Pittsburgh Conference with a
congregation of 25 members who formed the nucleus for this Mission. The Sunday school was organized with
an enrollment of about 50 with Rev. A.J. Bird as Superintendent and Rev. A. Niebel as assistant. The Church
and Sunday school first met in the old Tabernacle Building in East Seventh Street (now 2nd St. S.E. and Rex
Ave). The following is a description of the first meeting place as written by Edward Byerly, one of the charter
members of Grace Church and Sunday school:
“In the spring of 1885, the Pittsburgh Conference started a Mission in the City of Canton and sent Rev. A.J.
Bird as Pastor. Some 50 members left the station church to join the Mission. I am one of them.
On Sunday, May 31st, we held the first preaching service. Having attended Sabbath School at the station
church, we, as members of the new Mission, bid goodbye to the station church and went to the Tabernacle on
East 7th Street for preaching. On the following Sabbath we organized a Sunday school.
Our Church then was a very odd looking one indeed. The Tabernacle was entirely too large for so small a con-
gregation, and another bad feature about the place was that it was used as an Armory at the same time and dur-
ing services, the congregation faced a wall hung full of muskets. Judging from my own experience, I suppose
that many of us would often lose a good part of the sermon by the sight of what was at some distance beyond
the Preacher.”
On September 22, 1885, a lot was purchased near the southeast corner of Corell and 4th Street N.E. and a com-
fortable building erected immediately; this was occupied in December 1885. The Sunday school was in a flour-
ishing condition with an average attendance of 112, in 10 months more than doubling the original enrollment.
Two other schools were started through the efforts of Grace Sunday School; “Bethany,” (272 membership) on
Mahoning Road, and “Trinity,” (352 membership) on Navarre Road.
By congregational action in 1894, the name was changed to “First United Evangelical Church”, and again in
1924, after the merger, changed back to Grace Evangelical Church.
On May 6, 1906, the present building, located at the corner of 4th Street and Mahoning Road N.E. was dedi-
cated, (The church is still standing today and is being used by another congregation.)
At that time, the Sunday school had an enrollment, in the main school of about 500, a Cradle Roll Department
of 90, and a Home Department of 50. The membership of the church in 1945 is 372. The enrollment of the
Sunday school is 384, the Home Department 21, Cradle Roll 35. We have a Crusader Christian Endeavor with
28 members and two Departments of Youth. The church records noted that seven Sundays in October and No-
vember 1918, there was no Sunday School because of influence epidemic, by order of the Board of Health. The
highest enrollment reported was in 1915-630 members and the highest attendance was on May 24, 1931 with
588 present.
The Sunday School has always been a very important factor in the life of the Church and for a good many
years has been prominent in monetary contributions for different church activities through the monthly Bank
Sunday offering taken the last Sunday of every month.
Fellowship have been organized with an enrollment of 27. We have four departments of Missionary Work, Sr.
W.M.S. membership 58, Jr. W.M.S. 17, Mission Band 25 and Little Heralds 39. I
In 1945 the congregation also owned two properties at the rear of the Church building facing 3rd St. NE. In 1920
the parsonage was built next to the church with the Sunday school pledging $2000 each year for three years. =
$6000.
In 1925 they pledged $6000.00 for a pipe organ. The chimes were donated by Mr. and Mrs., J.E. Bowman. A
harp attachment was donated by H. J. Fromm. The present building was remodeled from time to time to meet the
needs of the congregation.
Other contemplated improvements include an electrically-operated motor to move the door of the auditorium up
and down and outside repairs to the steeple.
In 1945, the Grace Church was made up with the following organizations, (Much like today): Trustees, Stewards,
Church organist, Choir Director, Committee on Evangelism, Administrative Council, Woman’s Missionary Soci-
ety, Junior Missionary Society, Mission Band, Little heralds, Home Department, Class leaders, Crusader’s C.E.,
Youth Fellowship (Young People), Youth Fellowship (Senior Young People), Youth’s Fellowship Council, Mu-
sic Committee, Publicity Committee, Audit Committee, Finance Committee, Board of Christian Education, and
an Usher’s Association.
For those interested, the Old Grace Church is still standing and being used in 2010. It is at 4th Street and Mahon-
ing Road N.E. The parsonage was just left of the church building. It is no longer standing.
