New Jazz Works: Commissioning and
Ensemble Development

What is New Jazz Works?
New Jazz Works is a grant program that supports professional U.S. Jazz ensembles to create, perform, and if desired, record new works.
This program is made possible by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

New this year
New Jazz Works provides support to professional U. S. Jazz ensembles for
• Core: the creation and performance of a new work (up to $19,000)
• Continued Life: additional performances (and recording if desired) (up to $12,000)
• Administrative Support: may include recording (up to $3,000)
• Free registration and travel subsidy to a CMA national conference
An ensemble is eligible if:
• it consists of 2-10 professional musicians (student groups are not eligible)
• it is based in the U.S. or its territories• the leader is a U.S. citizen or permanent
resident• it includes improvisation as an integral part of
its composition and performance

• it is a CMA Organization-level member• it has no overdue reports or financial
obligations to CMA• it has waited 12 months from completion of a
previous New Jazz Works grant
You choose
• An ensemble may apply to either New Jazz Works or Classical Commissioning in one grant cycle
Similarly, a composer
• may appear on only one application to either program (not both)
• may not have any outstanding obligations to CMA
The composer
• may be either a performing member of the ensemble or a guest
• is an individual (not a group)• must be a citizen or permanent resident of the
U.S.
Core supports
• the creation of a new work of substantial length ($9,000 composer fee)
Core also funds
• $1,000 per musician for rehearsing and performance of the premiere plus one additional performance of the new work in the U.S. or its territories
• three public performances in different venues, or
• two public performances in different venues plus a recording
These activities may take place worldwide
Continued Life offers $12,000 for
Administrative Support provides $3,000 for
• a booking agent• a recording• other administrative expenses identified by
the grantee
CMA National Conference
• complimentary registration for the ensemble leader
• travel/hotel subsidies for ensemble leaders who live more than 200 miles from New York City
The CD-R Work Sample
• must be in CD-R format• must feature a single work on each track• may contain music from a live concert,
studio/home recording, and/or commercial disc
• tracks may be edited an/or excerpted
• #1: Ensemble (performed by applicant ensemble or majority of its members)
• #2: Ensemble (same as above)• #3: Composer (score, lead sheet, or graphic
notation required)• #4: Composer (score, lead sheet, or graphic
notation optional)

• 1 stapled application form• 8 additional copies of the stapled application• 1 CD-R Work Sample• a score excerpt, lead sheet, or graphic
notation of work on Track 3

• 1 copy of the Memorandum of Understanding between ensemble and guest composer
• copy of a document verifying the U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status of the ensemble leader, or ensemble’s 501 (c)(3) designation
• 1 copy of a document verifying the U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status of the guest composer
The panel will select finalists on the basis of
• artistic excellence of the ensemble• compositional expertise of the composer
