What is reading fluency ? Reading fluency is defined as the ability to decode and comprehend a text at the same time.

the ability to read connected text, rapidly,

smoothly, effortlessly, and automatically with little conscious attention to the mechanics of reading such as decoding.

Reading a text with speed , accuracy , and proper expression.

Components/Foundational Skills of Reading Fluency

Reading fluency is comprised of three component skills, or fluency indicators:

•accuracy of word decoding,

•automaticity of word recognition

•prosody of oral text reading

Read aloud Students need to hear how a good reader reads fluently

Teacher led read a loud using great expression and show proper fluency

Students have a role model on how they should read

Repeated readings of familiar text allows students to become more accurate and more speedy

Younger students can re-read the same story repeatedly

Repeated readings can also be used to graph progress of fluency rate

Scripts/plays that allow students to practice prosody well

Fluency is WorthwhileFluency activities will make a

difference in your students ’

daily reading.
