Page 1: New Netherland

During 1609, the Dutch Merchants went up the Hudson river to trade for fur with the Indians.

By 1614, they established themselves with a year round pass and founded Fort Nassau, and later renamed it to Fort Orange.

In the 1620’s there were about fifty Dutch; half being traders and the other half soldiers.

The Dutch also founded New Amsterdam on Manhattan island. Later it possessed the best Harbor.

The Dutch didn’t like the Natives in the lower part of the Hudson River, one clergy states how much he despises them because of how savage they acted.

The Dutch thought that the missionaries weren’t necessary in New Netherland.
