The Benefits of a PetThe Benefits of a PetHave you been thinking of adopting a pet? Professionals have seen the benefi ts of pet ownership for seniors and much research has been done. Here are a few health benefi ts associated with pet companionship, according to a University of Minnesota study and experts in the fi eld:• Pets actually help lower health care costs. Seniors with pets make fewer doctor visits; especially for minor health issues.• Seniors with pets have more emotional stability in times of stress.• Pet owners have signifi cantly lower systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels.• Heart patients who have owned pets live longer than those who don’t have pets.• Male pet owners have fewer signs of heart disease• People without a cat/dog are 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of heart disease than those who own a pet.• When faced with diffi cult situations, the heart rate and blood pressure of pet owners increases less if their pet is by their side.• Pets help fi ght depression.• Seniors living independently with pets have better physical and mental health than those living without. But even with these possible health benefi ts, is a pet right for you? Before adopting a pet (or getting one for a senior), many things should be considered. Here are just a few:• What is the right pet for the you?• Are you set in your ways? • Have you had a pet before? • Do you have disabilities? • Is the pet the right age?• Does the pet have a good temperament? • Are fi nances an issue? A little research and some deep thinking may lead you to decide to take the next step and open your home and your heart to a pet. If you live in the Peninsula Area, consider checking out the new Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter. Located in Newport News, this facility provides animal sheltering and adoption services for dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and smaller "pocket pets," as well as exotic animals including reptiles, amphibians, and birds.Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter offers a reduced rate for seniors to adopt an animal - only $38. The adoption fee is waived if a senior (65 or older) adopts a senior cat or dog (8+ years). For more information, contact:
