Creating an Equitable School Environment
Equity is a word that is often discussed between home
and school. There are many different interpretations of the
meaning of equity. We are taking this opportunity to provide
greater understanding of what the depth & breadth of equity
looks like in a school environment.
To best support the teachers, administration and the
parent community, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education
put together a tool to assist all parties involved in exploring and
deconstructing this very sensitive and challenging topic.
The goal is to create a more equitable and inclusive
environment for ALL to learn. In order to create positive school
experience it is suggested that we look at the following 7 areas of
equitable practices:
1) Classroom Climate and Instruction
2) School Climate
3) Student Voice and Space
4) Family/Caregiver-School Relations
5) School Leadership
6) Community Connections
7) Culture of Professional Development
What does this all mean? It tells us that we need to
move away from the concept of “one size fits all” and address the
issues that are relevant to one’s own school. Let’s take a look at
all our stakeholders and address their concerns and their needs.
To sum it up “We must look at issues that challenge
us; ask difficult questions; and allow for divergent opinions to
create a better environment for those students whom the
current system has failed.” (P. 7 Centre for Urban Schooling)
Our goal at Bowmore is to ensure that we look at our
strengths and area of growth. Then we collectively discuss
prioritise and implement solutions. Already we can comfortably
say that we have brought awareness to Bowmore by introducing
Positive Space to our staff, executed two Aboriginal Rotations
Day, bought books that reflect our student body, provided
Student Voice via Student Leadership Council and that our
bulletin boards display social justice.
Our Equity Committee will resume in January 2016.
Our first meeting will take place Monday, January 11th
, 2016 in
the conference room. All are welcomed!

DECEMBER 2015 PARENT COUNCIL INFO
.
QSP FUNDRAISER Calling all Volunteers!
FDK – UPDATE Bowmore staff has been working with TDSB Design,
Facilities, and Bowmore parents to improve our two Kindergarten yards.
We are delighted to announce that Bowmore is the
recipient of a $75,000 grant. This grant must be applied to the south
Kindergarten yard because it is an area shared by the school, daycare, and the community. The aim is to fix the drainage and update the wood play structure to modern safety standards. The landscape architects are designing the area and we will update you once there are plans that we can share!
We continue to work on improving the east yard. Mulch was laid mid-November. Parent Lesley Van Wynsberghe sourced and put us in contact with a mural artist who will paint three panels for the center of the brick wall.
Are you a good baker? Do you like cold
calling sponsors? Can you put pizza on a plate? Or maybe you
are a terrific organizer? Whatever your
talents, Bowmore School Council needs you! We're looking for
volunteer helpers of all shapes, stripes, and abilities to help
make Bowmore great! Putting your name forward is the only
commitment we require at this point! The bigger the pool of
volunteers, the better for everyone! Many hands make light
work. Plus, volunteering is fun! Let's do this!
Whatever your skills, please
email [email protected] with the subject
line VOLUNTEER with your Name, Contact
Information, and Volunteer Skills/Preferences.
Pass the Tissues, Please!
We are in the middle of cold season and extra boxes of
