Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Mrs Mellon - This week we were delighted to receive a visit from Mrs Mellon, wife of Harry
Mellon, who was the first headteacher at Cardinal Newman when it opened in 1969. Mrs Mellon is
in the process of moving house and brought in some items belonging to Mr Mellon, including a
chair made by Cardinal Newman students that was presented to him on his retirement, sketches
of the school and some old photos. Mrs Mellon also has a film of the opening of the school that she is going to give us. It was
wonderful to see Mrs Mellon and we wish her happiness in her new home.
Congratulations to Maisie Douglas - Many congratulations to Maisie Douglas in Year 8 who has been chosen to
represent England at the first Paracheer World Championship in Florida in April. This is a fantastic achievement for Maisie
who is only in Year 8 and we wish her the best of luck as she prepares for the championship.
CCFC - Well done to Coventry City Football Club who made it through to the final of the Checkatrade trophy at Wembley
in April. We had many excited fans in school this week but it was great to see former student Dion Kelly-Evans in action as
part of the winning team.
Year 8 Options Evening - Many thanks to all of the parents and students who joined us last night to hear vital information
to help their son/daughter make important decisions about their future. Attendance last night was a fantastic 94% and last
night I reminded parents of the importance of support at home to ensure academic success in school. Year 8 Parents’ Evening
takes place on Thursday 2 March 2017 and Options Forms must be returned to form tutors by 6 March 2017.
Canteen Revalve Units - Today an engineer has been on site to update the canteen Revalve units to enable the use of the
new £5 note (and the new £1 coin which comes into circulation in March this year). From next week students will be able to
top up their lunch time accounts with the new £5.00 notes.
I hope you have a great weekend, Best wishes, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Year 8 Football vs Bishop Ullathorne
An evenly fought home game saw our Year 8 boys bow out of the Coventry Schools’ Cup.
After the first half, in which Bishop Ullathorne raced ahead, our boys had an uphill chal-
lenge to bring the scores level in the last 10 minutes. A nail biting finish witnessed both teams miss
chances. A great individual strike by a Bishop Ullathorne boy snatched victory in a nine goal thriller.

Man of the Match: Joel Harnett - well done for a valiant performance.

Harry Potter Book Day - The Professors of Hogwarts
On Thursday 2nd February 2017, we celebrated our second annual Harry Potter Book Day Event at
Cardinal Newman Catholic School. It was also the twentieth anniversary of the first Harry Potter book
– The Philosopher’s Stone!
The event was a huge success and an opportunity for all the school Muggles (and maybe a few magic
folk) to get together, celebrate and dress up like their favourite character.
There were ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ lessons going on across the school and a chance to find all the
creatures that had escaped from Mrs Kelly’s briefcase during lunch time. A great many fans attended from all year groups and really enjoyed
themselves.
The evening was the final event of the day. ‘The Professors of Hogwarts’ was the theme of the evening and it was hosted in the library and
reported on by the Year 8 school news reporters. The scene inside the library was amazing with a platform nine and three quarters at the
entrance and some flying letters along the wall with a wonderful mug shot peep hole which caused a lot of laughs! Classrooms from
Hogwarts were set up including a mystic Divination classroom with spells that were created by library club members and a potions area with
lots of magic creations. Dumbledore’s office which Mrs Kelly made herself at home in, also drew the crowds.
The food lovers amongst us enjoyed Harry Potter classics such as butterbeer, chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans and Fizzing
Whizzbees. For those who knew their wizarding facts, a quiz was hosted by Professor Robbins and we also enjoyed some fun Harry Potter
themed game sheets. There were competitions with winners from Years 10, 8, 7 claiming some magical prizes.
A big thanks to all the staff and students who helped decorate and make the event truly magical.
Happy wizarding and see you next year!
