November 8, 2011Dear Parents,
I just returned from spending the morning visiting classrooms at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School. My fellow Malibu Principals, accompanied by two SMMUSD administrators, and I did a Learning Walk where we visited classrooms to observe how teachers teach academic and content-specific vocabulary. I have spent my entire career at the secondary level. I applaud teachers who are able to teach the younger students. Here at MHS, we have the benefit of matriculating students who, except under exceptional circumstances, possess foundational communication and literacy skills. We benefit from them having this foundation. Surely, such foundations vary, but there is always one nonetheless. Our job is to scaffold new learning on this foundation and, if necessary, to fill in holes. Personally, I am far more comfortable figuring out where to start than to face the awesome responsibility of putting all the very important foundation pieces in place, which is what our elementary school colleagues do.Our task today was to document how teachers teach academic and content-specific vocabulary. My elementary visit got me thinking about how important it is that we do the very same thing. The need to teach vocabulary never stops. Each of our teachers is responsible for teaching academic and content-specific vocabulary as each discipline is comprised of a language all its own. My visit prompted me to think about how hard, but important, it is to teach this specific type of vocabulary. (Continued on Page 5)

Acabo de regresar de visitar clases durante la mañana en Juan Cabrillo Elementary School. Mis colegas Directores de las escuelas de Malibu, acompañados por dos administradores de SMMUSD, y yo participamos en un “Learning Walk” (observación de enseñanza y aprendizaje) adonde visitamos clases para observar como los maestros enseñan vocabulario académico y especifico al contenido de la lección. Me he pasado mi carrera entera a nivel secundario. Aplaudo a los maestros que pueden enseñar a los estudiantes menores. Aquí en MHS, tenemos el beneficio de matricular estudiantes que, excepto en circunstancias excepcionales, poseen destrezas fundamentales de comunicación y alfabetismo. Nosotros nos beneficiamos de
tener esta fundación. Ciertamente, estas fundaciones varean, pero sin embargo siempre hay una. Nuestra obligación es de poner un andamio sobre esta fundación para el aprendizaje nuevo, y si es necesario llenar hoyos. Personalmente, me siento mucho más cómodo figurando adonde empezar que enfrentar la inmensa responsabilidad de juntar y poner en su lugar todos los pedazos muy importantes de la fundación, que es lo que hacen nuestros colegas de la escuela primaria.

Bike It! Walk It! Pool It! Day – 320 students from MHS and Juan Cabrillo participated in biking, walking, carpooling, or using the bus to get to school to raise awareness of students on Morning View Drive and to promote more environmentally friendly ways to get to school. Thank you to Audra Hotchkiss, the PTSA event chair, and the Middle School and High School Associated Student Bodies (ASB) for helping to coordinate this event.
The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District is proposing a policy that would prevent PTA’s from contributing funds towards the compensation of any personnel/staff positions at the school. "In order to provide program parity and equity for all schools and students in the district, the Board designates the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation as the central fundraising entity for the school District. A centralized fundraising model will create a district focus on programs for all students of the district while allowing for flexibility at each school. The Education Foundation will be the only fundraising entity to raise funds for the district to use to pay for personnel and professional development." There will be an informal question and answer session on the topic of disctrict-wide fundraising on November 15 at 3:30 in the MHS library. Craig Foster, Vice-president of Webster Elementary School PTA has spent significant time resarching and analyzing this topic. He will be sharing his information and answering questions.

Thanksgiving Pie Orders – The English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC or Bilingual Committee) will be selling Marie Callender pies for Thanksgiving. Flavors include pecan, pumpkin, razzleberry, and apple. Pies are $15 and orders can be placed in the main office. They will be delivered to school on Wednesday, November 23.

(Continued from Page 1) One does not simply put words and definitions on the board and believe that students will integrate them into their understanding of material. Vocabulary and content-specific language takes time to integrate into a student’s knowledge base. Learning vocabulary is about learning words to communicate conceptual ideas accurately and efficiently. Embedded in vocabulary are academic understandings that define our content. The languages of English, mathematics, science, social studies, language, music, visual art, and physical education differ even when the words are the same. To teach academic and content-specific language is to teach the content itself.
This year, our high school teachers are meeting in learning teams to learn various strategies for helping students improve their academic and content-specific reading comprehension, including vocabulary. Guided by a team of trainers, these teams learn a few strategies, implement them, and return to discuss implementation at their next meeting. The team leaders introduce a new set of strategies at each meeting. Our purpose is for teachers to have a toolkit of effective strategies that will strengthen students’ abilities to comprehend and use content-specific written material. The discussions are rich and give teachers the time to collaborate about how to support how students process content-specific written work. Such reflective conversations are necessary if teachers are to integrate teaching reading comprehension into their daily lessons. We all know teaching reading is important, but actually doing it can
be a challenge, especially if one does not have the tools. We see these learning teams as a means for providing teachers with important teaching tools.
During our Learning Walk we discussed the challenge of developing students’ ability to be independent word learners – students who, when faced with an unknown word, employ a variety of strategies to make meaning of the word. Our goal for all students is to teach them the skill of knowing which words are vital to further understand what they are reading, thus strengthening their ability to comprehend and use what they read. This process begins before children enter school and continues throughout a person’s life. Secondary teachers have always known that students need to be good readers. We continue to learn what this means within the various academic and content-specific disciplines and are working to improve our skills. I learned a great deal from our elementary school colleagues. I was awed by how monumental their challenge is in advancing what children must know and be able to do. I have forgotten how much young children develop in a very short amount of time. I am grateful that we get to pick up where our elementary school colleagues leave off. We get to build on the work they have done. We know we all are responsible for teaching vocabulary and comprehension and continue to rise to meet this challenge.

Mi visita me provocó a pensar sobre lo difícil, pero importante, que es enseñar este vocabulario específico. Este año nuestros maestros de preparatoria se están reuniendo en equipos de aprendizaje para aprender varias estrategias para ayudar a los estudiantes a mejorar en comprensión de lectura académica y especifica al contenido, incluyendo vocabulario. Guiados por un equipo de entrenadores, estos equipos aprenden algunas estrategias, las implementan, y regresan para discutir la implementación en su próxima junta. Los líderes de los equipos introducen un grupo nuevo de estrategias en cada junta. Nuestro propósito es que los maestros tengan un equipo de herramientas de estrategias efectivas que fortalezcan las habilidades de los estudiantes de entender y de usar material escrito específico al contenido. Continuamos aprendiendo lo que esto significa dentro de varias disciplinas académicas y específicas al contenido y están trabajando para mejorar nuestras habilidades. Yo aprendí mucho de nuestros colegas de la escuela primaria. Fui asombrado por lo monumental que es su desafío en avanzar lo que os niños necesitan saber y poder hacer. Dear Parents,Teachers, and Students,
As a denizen of Michigan, autumn is my favorite time of year. After 20 years in southern California, I've learned to appreciate uncrowded beaches and the crisp mornings and evenings that fall brings here. And, occasionally, I still spot a colored or falling leaf.
My favorite aspect of fall is the advent of the Thanksgiving holiday. I miss my extended family, but still welcome the time to reflect on the many reasons to be thankful. Within our school community, I so appreciate the wise and caring leadership provided by our MHS staff and the dedication and passion with which our teachers share their knowledge with our children. I am grateful to parents who are committed to making the MHS experience awesome for students, by volunteering, by contributing to The Shark Fund, and by supporting your children as they grapple with academic and developmental challenges.
At our last PTSA meeting parents and teachers heard from students responding to a series of questions as they sat in a "fishbowl" setting -- at a table in the middle of the library where we could observe, but not otherwise interact with them. These 11th and 12th grade students were funny, thought-provoking, and insightful. Here are some excerpts:
"Malibu high is like the liberal arts college of high schools."
To teachers - "Connect with me." "Teach students to do homework efficiently."
To parents - "Be supportive and give us credit for working hard.""Donʼt take it personally if we don't do well in school.""Ask us about other things besides school, what's important to us.""Encourage kids to talk to teachers or people who can help them when they struggle."
On how they connect positively with their parents -Movies, talking, sports, talking about life, music, making light of things.
On what makes a class great - "I could see my growth over time""The teacher is passionate about what she or he teaches.""The teacher makes you think for yourself, teaches students how to be collaborative and to be creative thinkers.""The class makes you think about something bigger than yourself."
All that to illustrate that our children are becoming wise before our eyes, even though we may not realize it on a day to day basis. I am thankful for them because they drive us to be better as individuals and as a school community.

Malibu High Girls’ Tennis are league champions! They had an undefeated 10-‐0 season and are on to CIF Playoffs this week. They are ranked #6 in the CIF poll. Junior BriJa Mosser won the Tri-‐Valley League singles tennis Mtle November 1 at Pepperdine University. She defeated La Reina senior Hilary West in the championship match, 6-‐2, 6-‐2. Malibu sophomore Lauren Louks placed third with a victory over Oaks ChrisMan's Elizabeth Ryan. Mosser advances to the CIF Individual Championships, which will take place Nov. 18 at the Cate School in Carpinteria. The Sharks, who finished the regular season with an undefeated record in league play, will play in the CIF team tournament in mid November. Go Sharks.

Accessing Your Child’s Grades with ILLUMINATE
Follow these steps NOW to access

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Get your child’s access code. Your child should have brought home a le@er that revealed the code. If you do not have it, contact your student’s counselor.
For direct access to the parent portal, go to h@ps://illuminatehc.com/smmusd/auth
1. As a first Mme user, select “Click here to register” (near the boJom of the white screen area).
2. Enter your first and last name.
3. Enter the access code assigned to you. The access code is case sensiMve.
4. Select “Save and conMnue.” You will be taken to a new screen and asked to enter your email address and to choose a password. This will complete the registraMon process.
ILLUMINATE is the new district wide sodware program that teachers use to record grades and parents may use to keep an eye on their students’ progress. Parents can keep track of all graded assignments by logging in to the site and entering log in informaMon.
However, before you can start, you have to REGISTER as a user.
To REGISTER, you will need your child’s ACCESS CODE. If you have children in the HS and MS, you will have one code for your child/children in the middle school and you will have another code for your child/children in the high school.
Access codes were sent home with students. If you did not get the leJer or there is an issue with the access code, please email your student's counselor.
The school district provided an access code to each contact listed in our informaMon system which means that in most cases each parent has his or her own access code. There are some excepMons.
Please email or call your student's counselor for assistance if you have trouble registering and then logging in to the system.
Use the instrucMons on the led to get into the system, register and log on.
Once you have successfully created your user account you can log in anyMme and view the grade report for every teacher your child has. The system is designed to allow parents to monitor progress throughout the year. Keeping informed about your child’s grade is the best way to know how you’re child is progressing.

MALIBU HIGH EVENTS AND NEWS
The Malibu High School Varsity basketball team will be participating in a tournament this winter in Orlando, Florida. Schools from all over the country will be attending this 4-day tournament. The team has been fundraising to pay for travel and their expenses. The most recent fundraising is the banner sale. The boys have been asking local business and families to support their team by purchasing a banner that will hang in the gym throughout the season. The first game of the season is November 28th at Oak Park at 7pm. The 2011-2012 varsity basketball players are: Jack Platner(captain), Kyle Sandler(captain), Justin Holmes(captain), Harrison Kaplan, Patrick Fontenette, Shea Rouda, Anthony Kodomichalos, Parker Smith, Will Rosenthal, Andrew Yazdani, Bryan Salcedo, Chase McQueen, and Eric Caldwell. Board of Education Regular Meeting – Thursday, October 20, 2011Board Notes is provided as a public information service from the Office of the Superintendent and is intended to provide an immediate summary of the Board of Educationʼs action and discussion on significant projects and services from the most recent board meeting. Not all items that were listed on the board agenda are included in this report. Please contact the Superintendentʼs Office (310.450.8338 x70229) with questions about this summary.
On October 20, the board took action on the following:
The board approved a research project with the University of California for Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Education and Department of Psychology to test hypotheses about the psychosocial benefits of racial/ethnic diversity in urban middle
schools. The lead researcher explained what kind of data would be gathered, how it would be gathered, the timeline of the project, outreach methods to John Adams and
Lincoln Middle School families, and the process for updating the Board of Education. In response to board member concerns, staff assured the board that this study would not interfere with the districtʼs current work, but would in fact help the district better understand how to make students feel safer at school.
The board accepted contributions to the Equity Fund from 2010-11 and approved the allocation of those funds to the school sites for 2011-12. The board further approved staffʼs recommendation to allocate $60,000 from the Equity Fund to the Educational
Services Department to enhance and strengthen the 2011-12 school year and summer 2012 districtwide initiatives, including Intensive Intervention Summer School
(IISS), Connect for Success (for incoming 9th graders), Jump Start to Success (for incoming 6th graders), and the Young Collegians. Additionally, $80,000 will be kept in reserve to cover any
additional costs should the board decide to expand the summer program offerings for 2012. On October 20, the board discussed the following:
The Ed Services staff presented information on the summer school programs that were offered this past summer, including enrollment figures, results from studentsʼ pre- and post-assessments, grades received, and survey data. The board asked staff to put together a budget showing additional costs associated with expanding
the summer school program offerings for 2012.
Santa Monica High School principal Laurel Fretz presented the findings of the recent WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visit, including results from student, faculty, and parent surveys; classroom observations; student interviews; and
student work collections. Ms. Fretz explained the specific action plans that are being developed and implemented to address the specific findings. She commended Samohiʼs
staff for being so receptive to collaborating and improving their own teaching methods. On October 20, the board heard public comments on the following:
Roosevelt PTSA leaders shared a recent decision passed by the Roosevelt PTSA supporting the need to address the inequity of fundraising among the school sites. They encouraged the implementation of any change in policy
or practice to be vetted through an open and transparent, democratic process.

The November 3 Board Meeting:
Last week, the board discussed the following: In response to an earlier request from the board, the superintendent brought forward proposed revisions to the Acceptance of Gifts policy (BP 3290). The revisions designate the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation as the central fundraising
entity for the school district. The Ed Foundation would be the only fundraising entity to raise funds for the district to use to pay for personnel and professional development. The
purpose of the revisions is to create a structure for increased giving and to create program parity during the school day across the district. Following an extensive public comment session, the board members shared their own thoughts on the proposed policy changes and the concept of districtwide fundraising. This item will return for a second round of discussion at the November 17 board meeting.
Staff walked the board though the timeline and process for developing the 2012-13 budget. Like two years ago, staff will hold workshops (yet to be scheduled) for
members of the community to learn more about the budget and public school funding.
Last night, the board recognized the achievements of Malibu High School students who were named National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students and
Semi-Finalists. The awards are given every year to high school students nationwide based on their PSAT (Preliminary SAT) scores.

Prudential Spirit of Community AwardsThe Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to honor both middle level and high school students for outstanding acts of community service. If you have taken part of community service and want to apply for a community service award fill out the application at www.nassp.org/spirit by November 1st. All applications will be reviewed by the CSL Site Council Sub-Committee and one student will be recommended for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. (please note this award has been on eMHS and school announcements)

MIDDLE SCHOOL ASB TAKES ON CANCER!The middle school ASB is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to plan and implement the first ever Relay Recess on our campus!! Beginning in January students will develop, plan and execute a middle school wide fundraising event!

Veteran’s Day & School Furlough Day – The CLUB will be OPENFriday November 11th The CLUB will be open from 9:00am to 6:30pm.
Stay Late – Sky HighFriday November 18th The Club will be taking a trip to Sky High, for fun on the wall to floor trampolines, trampoline dodgeball games, and more! Early sign-ups are encouraged; cost is $20 for 2 hours. Signed permission slip is required to sign-up. Vans will leave the Club at 5:30pm and return at 9:00pm.
SMART GirlsFor 6th & 7th grade girls designed to develop healthy attitudes, lifestyles, build relationships with peers and gain confidence. Meets every Wednesday from 3:15pm to 4:15pm at The Club. Enrollment will close after October 26th.
Man Up!For 6th-8th grade boys designed to provide guidance and mentorship. Topics include cultural and social pressures, aggression, bullying, and healthy life choices. Meets every Wednesday @ 3:15pm! Next meeting is Wednesday November 2nd, enrollment will close after this meeting.
Torch ClubA yearlong leadership and service club for teen’s 6th - 8th grade. Members learn to elect officers and work together to implement community service projects at The CLUB, MHS, and community. Next meeting will be November 3rd and meets every other Thursday @ 3:15 pm! Late sign ups are accepted.
Green TeensAn environmental based team for middle school and high school teens with project initiatives to save the ‘bu. Green Teens also partner with MHS’s ‘The environmental Club’. Our next meeting is November 10thand meets every other Thursday @3:15 pm! Late sign ups are accepted.
Triple Play Promotes fitness and leadership through fun, engaging and competitive intramural sports and recreational activities that also emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship. Sports include basketball, football, soccer, ping-pong, fooseball, pool, and many more! Next session is November 4th @ 1:30 pm and is every following Friday.
Thanksgiving HolidayThe CLUB will be closed on November 24th & 25th.
Power HourA yearlong incentive based homework program where teens can receive tutoring use computers for homework and are encouraged to complete their homework to succeed! Members who participate regularly are invited to attend Power Hour parties where their educational accomplishments are acknowledged!Monday-Thursday from 3:20-4:30pm!
Parent Co-opParents and family members are encouraged to join and volunteer weekly, monthly or whatever your schedule allows. Get involved by sharing your expertise and resources and help build a sense of family at The Club. Most areas of expertise welcome; including arts and crafts, tutoring, maintenance, photography, free snack and Friday BBQ program, yoga, help with events and much more!
Since 1999 the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu Teen Center (BGCM) has been the only organization solely dedicated to Malibu’s Youth. The BGCM is a safe place to learn and grow; we provide ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals, and life-enhancing programs focusing on character and leadership development. BGCM now hosts over 120 teens daily and provides professional youth development services to over 1200 youth annually. BGCM relies 100% on the communities support to sustain its vital after school programs and operations. The Shark Fund Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who gave since the start of the school year! Your generosity and thoughtfulness translates directly into a more vibrant, well-rounded education for our kids and helps ensure MHS remains one of the finest public schools in America.
If you have not yet given to The Shark Fund, please consider doing so today. Less than 1/3 of MHS families have donated so far for 2011/2012. This is not nearly enough to reach our GOAL of NOT HAVING TO CUT VALUABLE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES EVERY STUDENT DEPENDS ON. While the official ask is $ 1,500 per child, we gladly accept donations ranging from $20 to $ 20,000 and up. Simply giving is more important than what you give and every dollar helps build a foundation of strength, diversity and passion.
Donating to The Shark Fund is as easy as pie (and more delicious for the soul). Simply visit our website at www.thesharkfund.org or pick up a donation envelope in the MHS office. We offer assistance in applying for employer matching gifts/grants and accept donations broken up in any denomination or timetable that suits you.
