Letter from the CO

Louisiana (Gold) Families,
Greetings – The end of October brought Hurricane Sandy to
our shores; this powerful storm has left many portions of the
east coast without power, considerable damage to property and
loss of lives. Many LOUISIANA families have friends and
loved ones in the affected areas and I hope that each of you
have had the chance to ensure the people you care about are
well. As our nation fights through this and recovers, it gives
us time to reflect and think about our individual family
readiness. The northwest is no stranger to fall storms and
occasional earthquakes – are you and your family ready to deal
with these likely problems? Simple things like changing
smoke detector batteries quarterly and testing them; ensuring
you have adequate water and food in case of power outages;
ensuring your vehicle is in peak condition; and having an
escape plan from your home in case of emergency are basic
things that are essential to being ready in case of problems.
The month of October went by very fast for the crew; with
November here at our doorstep, the crew is in the middle of
our Pre-Deployment Training Period. This is a busy and
important period where the crew trains and certifies to deploy
the ship to accomplish our national tasking. The crew
accomplished a lot in the past month. Notably, the crew did an
outstanding job getting the ship prepared for the BLUE crew
patrol, all while conducting very challenging training at the
Trident Training Facility. I am very proud of the crew’s
efforts and they are on track to be ready for our upcoming
refit.
Early in November, I, along with three other crewmembers
will be traveling to the great state of Louisiana as part of a ship
namesake visit. We will visit New Orleans to meet with the
family of the ship’s sponsor, give a presentation to the
NROTC students at Tulane University and travel to Baton
Rouge to participate in a Veteran’s Day parade. This is a great
opportunity for LOUISIANA to give back to the community
and we are excited to represent the crew.

The command will start a well-deserved leave period starting
Friday, 2 November at 1600 and ending Monday, 19 November
at 0730. With the fall weather truly here, it is always good to
plan your travel in advance and have a contingency plan in case
the weather turns worse. If you are driving long distances, plan
reasonable travel times back here and if in trouble, make sure to
call your supervisor to keep us informed of your intentions.
The safety, welfare and enjoyment of hard-earned leave are
very important to me and my number one priority during the
leave period is to make sure we all return safely, recharged and
ready to tackle the challenges ahead.

COB’s Corner
LOUISIANA (GOLD) Families,
Greetings. This month has been busy; we have exercised the officers
and crew in a variety of trainers and scenario based evaluations. As
expected, LOUISIANA completed this task with high marks; the
crew is made up of highly intelligent, resourceful and committed
men whose professionalism is second to none. We have come to
expect nothing short of excellence from our crew and continue to
receive the same.
This month we selected our Sailors of the Quarter and Year and the
results are:
YN3 Elliott Eagerton – Blue Jacket of the Quarter
MM3 Thompson – Blue Jacket of the Year
MM2 Matthew Bombard – Junior Sailor of the Quarter
MT2 Alan Topp – Junior Sailor of the Year
MM1 Matthew Pierjok – Sailor of the Quarter
LS1 Christopher Schmitt – Sailor of the Year
MT2 Topp was also selected as the Submarine Squadron
SEVENTEEN Junior Sailor of the Year. BRAVO ZULU and
congratulations to each of the selectees, their accomplishments speak
for themselves. Additionally, CS1 and Marjorie Brown welcomed
their first child, Violet Grace, congratulations to the both of them.
Our leave period starts on the 2nd of November and runs for several
weeks, ending on 19 November. This is a great opportunity to spend
some great quality time with our loved ones. Please remember to be
safe, our roads are getting wet and can be slick. The leave period
can only be successful if each one of us put safety in the forefront of
our thoughts. If you find yourself in a moment of adversity, take the
time to assess and evaluate the situation to best place your family in
a safe place.
Our off-crew period thus far has been highly beneficial to the ship
and our families. As continue down this path, I ask each of you to be
vigilant, the holiday season is nearly upon us and the hustle and
bustle is beginning. Please be sure to contact the Ombudsman
and/or Family Support Group if you have questions, concerns or are
looking for resources on base, they are a great team of individuals
who are fully aware of services and benefits the Navy has for our
families.
