Rockets to the Rescue Alannah Byrne, Canyon Coyotes 4-H Club, Reporter On October 4 the Canyon Coyotes, along with several other clubs from the Antelope Valley partnered with the Education Office at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Palmdale, in the National Youth Science Day project Rockets to the Rescue program. The hosts for the day were Shaun Smith, K-12 Formal Education Program Lead, who taught on the History of Rockets and Basic Rocket Design, and David Alexander, Digital Learning Network Education Specialist, who taught on Food in Space. Youth were divided into teams and designed a mission patch and a paper rocket, which they later launched in a competition on Wednesday, October 8th. The rockets were attached by PVC pipe to a two liter bottle filled with air. When the youth were ready to launch their rockets, they jumped on the bottle. One of the competitions was accuracy of the flight. They could adjust the direction of their rocket by movement of the PVC pipe. They learned to only change one variable at a time in order to determine if that was helpful. To test the accuracy of their flight, they were aiming at a “hula hoop island.” They were given two tries and the winner of this competition was the team of Rebekah Kasperson and Akzila Neidhart of the Canyon Coyotes and Arah from Eastside Antelopes. The overall winner for accuracy of the flight, distance and overall design was the team of Rachel Kasperson, Mark Kasperson, Joshua Cheatham, and Nathaniel Boeker. A big thank you to Mrs. Kasperson who attended a training session led by NASA and assisted with building the rockets and the launch
