THE GHOSTS OF GRAFFITI PAST
WORDS: SEANO | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
The life expectancy of even the most amazing graffiti art in the world is tragically short. This is especially true in Raleigh and around the Triangle. In my 21 years of painting with a spray can I have been blessed to collaborate on a variety of surfaces standing side-by-side with some of the most talented people I have ever come across. Each artist unique in their background, creative voice and style of execution but all of them capable of giving birth to mesmerizingly monumental masterpieces.
When we think of an artist creating a “masterpiece” we think of legacy. We think of the permanence inherent to supreme artisanal craft. We think of museums. Unfortunately the only legacy a true graffiti artist can take with them is their reputation of paintings that have lived a colorful life but have died young. You see, graffiti in its most pure form is a temporary experience. It is an extension of the artists voice splattered upon a surface that will scream louder than the artist can with his or her own words. Just like the sound waves from the loudest scream, ultimately the visual vibrations of the paintings on the walls will wither away, losing their vibration and get painted over. This is not something to be mourned. This is the natural life cycle of graffiti.

With this knowledge firmly in hand I have taken to documenting any graffiti or street art I encounter. These expressions range across a variety of forms including tags, stickers, freight train graffiti, wheatepasting, posters, murals, scratchies, video projection, markers, wall graffiti, sculptures, street performers—the list is long and continues to grow. With each day that passes more forms of graffiti and street art are invented, deployed and destroyed. Whether you agree or disagree with these methods of self-expression they are worth digesting and documenting. Love it or hate it, graffiti is the creative voice of people in need of expression.
During the last thirty years the Triangle has been home to some of the most talented graffiti artists in the US. Artists such as Filter, Yors, Snuze, Aim, Woem, Mines, Relm, Celm, Zone, 78er, Shade, Bersk, Kram, Sicr, Fowl, Armor, Cult, Demer, Spill, Yuk, Sier, Bot, and Tane plus a list of notable young artists starting to make their name in the game.
The photos included in this story were taken from a production on a wall in Raleigh near Cup-a-Joe which has since been torn down. It is a strong example of a home-grown work of art that would be lost to history if it weren’t for the art of documentation and graffiti ghost hunting.

WILL THE REAL RALEIGHDJS PLEASE STAND UP
WORDS: ROB SIMPLE | PHOTOS: JOSEPH WILLIFORD
Whether you know it or not, Raleigh, NC is a mecca for live music. With over a hundred live shows per month and a population that surpasses New Orleans, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Raleigh, NC is flush with an incredibly thriving music scene. With venues large and small you can find just about everything from bluegrass to head bangin’ thrash metal.
Leading the charge on the front lines for this musical onslaught are the djs in this city. They grind it out throughout the week and deep into the weekend during every live show,
dance party and festival year round. Without these soldiers we simply would not have the scene that we are blessed to have.
Earlier this year we managed to gather the majority of our active Raleigh djs in one place for a collective photograph. The djs represented a wide spectrum of genres and specialties from hip hop technicians to EDM rave specialists. DJ Spclgst and Sami Automatic organized the event while local photographer Joseph Williford was on set to capture this momentous photograph.

ARTIST YOU SHOULD KNOW: GREG CARTERWORDS: SEANO | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
Stepping into the home of Raleigh artist Greg Carter is like stepping into a welcoming, lucid dream on a comfortable summer night. You know you’re not in Kansas anymore but you are completely cool with that. As a matter of fact, your pretty psyched to be in that dream right now.
I consider Greg one of Raleigh’s best kept secrets however his work is not much of a secret anymore. After moving from Minnesota over 20 years ago Greg has amassed an impressive catalog of sculptures, paintings, illustrated books and drawings while showing at a number of galleries, most recently Carrack in Durham. His work is a whimsical twisting of color and pattern layered with solemn human emotion. A truly unique aesthetic.
Greg was nice enough to allow me and my family to spend some time with him at his home as he gave us an incredible tour of the compound. His work is delicately yet ubiquitously placed all over his spacious abode so wherever you stroll you are in the presence of his colorful creations. You’ll be able to see for yourself as he welcomes us all to his showing at the Mahler Gallery on the September 6th First Friday. We’ll be seeing you there.

It’s late. And dark. Mist clings tightly to the ground and an army of gray stone slabs stabs silently from the damp earth. Cutting through Oakwood Cemetery seemed a fine idea when leaving the party. It’s only a few blocks, after all. Now, the handsome homes in the distance, so inviting a few hours earlier, seem desolate and foreboding. The rustle of loose earth, off to the right, encourages a swifter pace. The unmistakable grinding of stone against stone, from the line of crypts ahead, inspires a quick detour. Then, somewhere close, a deep, mournful moan rises up across the low, shadowy hills. A ragged, stinking claw lands heavily on your shoulder and you turn to face an undead thing, rank and fresh from the grave. “BBBBRRRAAAIINNNNZZZZZZ!!!”
This is how, to one degree or another, and with some small embellishments, every annual Raleigh Zombie Walk has kicked off for the last seven years.
What is it About Zombies, Anyway? What is our fascination with the walking dead? Every human civilization has a tale of risen corpses; the Epic of Gilgamesh describes the dead’s transport from the underworld to devour the living. Some interpret George Romero’s 1968 zombie opus, Night of the Living Dead, as a critique of our consumer culture. We can easily extend the metaphor to our mobile society in which friends gather only to bury their faces in the glow of smart phones. Perhaps we envy the undead their immutability and immortality, albeit trapped in a shell of rotting flesh. Or perhaps our preoccupation is deeper yet: the innate fear of an unyielding, merciless predator wired to do what it does – hunt down and consume the flesh of the living. As a species, we no longer contend with the threat of a lion crouching behind some nearby bush, so zombies may represent that lost part of ourselves.
THE FREAKS COME OUT AT NIGHT
WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
LIFE
25
26
Zombies permit us to safely play at being prey. They let us take that very ancient part of our brains out for a much-needed romp, if just for a short while.
Zompacalypse, Raleigh StyleThe City of Oaks is no less susceptible to the zombie plague than Romero’s Pittsburgh or Rick Grimes’ Atlanta. Every year since 2007, more than 300 of the living dead have converged on downtown for the Raleigh Zombie Walk. Ghouls of every imaginable ilk lurch though the streets of our capital. The terrifying, the silly and the sexy shuffle through the city as weekend diners gape at the grotesque spectacle. Eventually, its hunger for the living sated, the hoard retreats for an after-party of apocalyptic proportions.
Whatever our fascination, zombies shamble across the cultural landscape – toys, games, books, movies, music videos, hit television programs. We love the living dead. Every hungry, rotting, stinking, lurching, moaning last one of them.
The 2014 Raleigh Zombie Walk lurches from the Moore Square acorn, downtown Raleigh, at 7:00pm on Saturday, October 25. This is a free and family-friendly event. Living, dead and dead-ish welcome.

HOME IS WHERE THE WORD IS
WORDS: DASAN AHANU | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
Nestled in the corner of Brentwood Square Shopping Center is a new venue that is quickly making its mark on the Raleigh nightlife scene. The venue is Smokin Grooves Bar & Grill and it’s there that culture and community have nurtured a beautiful working relationship. Award winning poet, educator, and spoken word artist Dasan Ahanu has partnered with Smokin Grooves owner Delph to present one of the hottest open mic events in the Triangle. The event is called City Soul Café Open Mic and it happens every Wednesday night. Starting at 8:30pm, the event provides a platform for the best local artists to showcase their art and also features some of the hottest poets from across the country.
Ahanu and Delph first developed the concept for City Soul Café in 2011. The vision was to offer Raleigh a relaxed, sophisticated, and comfortable atmosphere where poets, musicians, and more could be showcased. When Delph decided to open Smokin Grooves in 2012, he knew he wanted to recreate the event there.
MUSIC

City Soul Café Open Mic starts with DJ Supreme spinning soul, R&B, and classic Hip Hop tunes. The open mic list is open to poets, vocalists, lyricists, and musicians. All performances are acoustic or acapella. There are drink and food specials provided by the venue and patrons are catered to by the amazing Smokin Grooves staff. The service is excellent and really helps set the vibe for the event. There are themed nights, giveaways, special guests, and interactive activities. The crowd is engaged at each show. The most popular crowd participation activity is the “old school moment” where the audience is challenged to a sing along competition that crowns the last voice singing the lyrics correctly as the winner. City Soul Café Open Mic is truly an experience unlike any other.
City Soul Café features some of the most talented poets and spoken word artists from across the country. Tony and Emmy award winning artist Georgia Me has featured. International touring artists and award wining poets Red Storm, Tommy Bottoms, and Queen Sheba have featured. National touring artists such as Kane Smego (Chapel Hill, NC), Drew Law (Washington, DC), and 13 of Nazareth (Alexandria, VA) have also featured. The event has featured national poetry slam champions like Ed Mabrey
(Charlotte, NC) and Brando (Denver, CO). Featured artists who have performed at the event have been seen on Def Poetry Jam (HBO), Verses and Flow (TV One), and BET’s 106 and Park. Even grammy award winning artists have stopped by to share their gifts. The event has become a home for independent artists where support and appreciation is understood.
City Soul Café is where new voices have an opportunity to express themselves in an open and welcoming environment and established voices have a chance to share their ongoing work with an attentive audience. This is a place where artists both new and old can share, network, and learn. Ahanu saw a need for a space like this in Raleigh and was continually reminded that there was a wide audience of people who love the arts and wanted to have a place where they could enjoy poetry while having a good time amongst their peers. City Soul Café has become a place for that and so much more.
Smokin Grooves Bar & Grill is at 2253 New Hope Church Rd, Raleigh, NC. Find out more about the venue and other events at smokingroovesbarandgrill.com. More about City Soul Café Open Mic can be found at citysoulcafe.splashthat.com.

STOOPIN’ WITH PORCHFLY
INTERVIEW & PHOTO: SEANO
The population in Raleigh is growing faster than Kudzu on Capital Blvd. With such a rapid influx of people we find ourselves in a dichotomy between two very different cultural worlds. Our population is split between those raised within a more traditional Southern comfort while the other half come from elsewhere looking to pioneer a new Southern culture. When melting pots begin to stir in this manner people look for bridges between cultures in order to find the footing for unified steps forward. We look for forums where both parties feel as though they are on common ground. It is here where we find the true value of the southern porch life.
Josh Gruder and Bryant Szabo, founders of Porchfly, distinctly understand the importance of the porch and how it is the perfect environment to foster the conversation that creates bridges between cultures.
Initially inspired by the varied porch cultures of New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn, Josh calmly sips from a mason jar resting in a weathered rocking chair stating, “No matter what walk of life you are in or where you are from, the porch is where stress gets replaced by comfort. The porch is a special place that rests between work and play.”
At present, Porchfly offers a variety of comfortable and cool t-shirt designs however they are reaching outside of the clothing sector to offer items that will enhance our local “porch life”. These items include lamps, custom wooden coozies and leather bound journals.
Gruder conveys, “Raleigh has the perfect vibe for porch culture. We work hard but know how to play as well. We are a big city with a small town vibe and a strong sense of community. As long as we have the porch we will always stay grounded.”

Keep up with Porchfly at Porchfly.com as well as at local festivals and events.
