Brief Report on Anti-TB Week

1. Press Meet
In view of the forthcoming Anti-TB week (from 17th
to 23rd
February 2012) programs,
Karnataka State TB Association, in collaboration with by the Office of the Joint Director of
Health & Family Welfare (TB), Govt. of Karnataka, SDS Tuberculosis Research Centre &
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, Medical Education Dept, Govt. of Karnataka,
National Tuberculosis Institute, Bangalore, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike & leading
NGOs; such as; Indian Development Foundation (IDF), St. Martha’s Hospital & Sandeep
Seva Nilayam organized a Press Meet at “Krishna” on the 14th
February by 11 am.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri D. V. Sadananda Gowda, Honourable Chief Minister of
Karnataka, announced the various programmes organized during the Anti-TB week & World
TB Day and appreciated the TB control efforts of the Government and Non-Government
Organizations. He appealed to the elected representatives of the people to extend their helping
hand in realizing the goals of Revised National TB Control Program. He also sought the
active participation of the private practitioners in RNTCP towards achieving increased
detection and cure rates. Expressing concern over the increase in the incidence of Multi Drug
Resistant (MDR) and Extremely Drug Resistant (EXD) TB, he said that Govt alone could not
remedy the situation; everybody should come forward and share the responsibility to stop
TB”.
Earlier, Dr. Shashidhar Buggi and Dr. T. Prabhu welcomed the honourable Chief
Minister with flowers. Dr. Shashidhar Buggi introduced the purpose of the Press Meet and
also introduced all the delegates to the CM. Pamphlets and leaflets, designed for Anti-TB
week 2012 were also released on the occasion.

All the staff of Karnataka State TB Association and around 30 representatives of both the
print and electronic media participated in the event.
• A circular was sent to all the Deputy Commissioners, District
Health Officers, District TB Officers and Principals of all the Medical
Colleges in Karnataka, prompting and encouraging them to organize
various programme during the Anti-TB Week.
2) TB awareness for Nursing Students: An awareness programme for the nursing students of Padmashree College for Nursing
was organised on 17-02-12 between 2.30PM to 5.00PM in association with SDS TRC &
RGICD, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Family Physicians Association and Catholic
Health Association of India.

The programme was started by 2.30 pm with a prayer by the group of students. Smt. Susheela
Jyothi Ramalingam welcomed. Sri. Narayanappa briefed the activities of the college. Dr. T.
Prabhu presided over. Dr. S. S. Revadi talked on “RNTCP-DOTS, Problems of TB in India
and Social & Economic burden of TB in India. Dr. S. Subramanyam spoke on “The Role of
Nursing Students in RNTCP with a power point presentation. The talk was followed by an
interactive session between the students and the doctors and several aspects with regard to
diagnosis and treatment of TB were discussed. Mr. Basawaraju from CHAI took part in the
Programme. More than 120 Nursing Students along with the staff of the college and members
of KSTBA participated. Banners and stickers had been displayed in the seminar hall and
pamphlets were distributed to all the students.
3) TB Awareness Camp at St.Mary’s Basilica, Bangalore:
A large number of devotees visit St. Mary’s Basilica every Saturday. In order to
sensitize them on TB, Karnataka State TB Association, Indian Development Foundation and
Sandeep Seva Nilayam joined hands and organised awareness campaign in the Church
premises on 18-02-12 (Saturday) between 9 am. and 4 pm.
Mr. Samuel Vincent from Indian Development Foundation and Mr. Shanthkumar from
Karnataka State TB Association went around distributing the pamphlets, stickers and various
other awareness materials to thousands of devotees. They also made necessary explanations
and clarified the doubts of the people.
4) Film Show:
A film show on TB was jointly organised by Karnataka State Tuberculosis
Association, Indian Development Foundation and St. Martha’s Hospital for the slum dwellers
and community people on 18-02-12 at Gundlutop slum, Kaval Byrasandra, Bangalore
between 11.00 a.m. and 1.00 a.m.
The program was started with the prayer by Smt. Uma Rai. Sri. Prasanna Kumar,
Member of Legislative Assembly, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore, inaugurated the
program by lighting the lamp. Dr. Begum Rawoof & Smt. Uma Rai from St. Martha’s, Dr. S.
Franklin, Manager, Indian Development Foundation, Sri. Ravindra Shenoy & Sri. Chandra
Reddy from KSTBA participated in the program. Sri. Prasanna Kumar requested the people to
avail the benefits of government programs such as RNTCP and help in controlling TB. Smt.
Uma Rai explained the sign & symptoms of TB with the help of flip charts and suggested
measures to control the spread of the disease. She also called for making use of best quality,
free drugs available for TB in the nearby PHC & DOTS centres. Dr. Begum Rawoof spoke on
the prevention and the role of community participation in preventing TB under Revised
National TB Control Program.
At the same time a documentary film in Kannada on TB “KSHAYA MAYA” was
organised by Indian Development Foundation. Dr. S. Franklin spoke about scientific facts on TB.
Good number of women participated in the program. Pamphlets were distributed to all the
participants.
5) Lecture & Film Show employees of Bangalore Milk Producers Union:
A Guest Lecture on TB awareness programme was jointly organised by KSTBA, IDF & PSI
for the employees of Bangalore Milk Producers Union at their office at Dr. M. H. Marigowda
Road, Bangalore on 18-02-2012 between 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm.

A good numbers of employees participated in the programme with zeal and enthusiasm and
clarified their doubts on medical aspects of Tuberculosis.
Dr. Revana Siddhaiah welcomed the participants. Dr. S. Subramanyam spoke on the
Scientific Facts on TB, DOTS under RNTCP Program & shared his experience as a DOT
provider. Dr. S. Franklin spoke about IDF involvement & commitment in RNTCP Program.
Mr. Siddaraju talked on mode of communication and methods to stop TB by displaying Flip
Chart. Health Education Materials on TB were also distributed to all the employees.
6) Telecast of Panel Discussion through TV (Bangalore Doordharshan):
On behalf of the Karnataka State TB Association & SDS Tuberculosis Research Centre &
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, Bangalore, arrangements were made for the telecast
of a panel discussion through Bangalore Doordharshan. The program was organized at the
studio of Bangalore Doordharshan (DD-1), JC Nagar, Bangalore, on the 10th
of February,
2012 between 4.00 pm and 4.30 pm and the event was telecasted on 19th
& 20th
of Feb 2012
between 9.00 am and 9.30 am.
Dr. S. S. Revadi was the anchor and Dr. Shashidhar Buggi was the panel member giving
details on DOTs, RNTCP, and slogan for the year, involvement of medical practitioners and
activities of Karnataka State TB Association. Through the discussion and a few pictures he
explained the key symptoms and emphasized on prompt and complete treatment.
7) Street Play on Tuberculosis (TB):
In order to reach TB awareness to the common man, a street play was jointly organised by
Karnataka State TB Association, Indian Development Foundation and Population Service
International at City (KR) Market, on 20-02-12 between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon and at
Arundatinagar Slum, Chandra Layout, on the same day between 2.00 pm. and 4.00 pm.
The key message was “TB CAN BE CURED”. Mysore Ramanand & his team “GEJJE
HEJJE” performed the street play in an impressive manner, attracting a good number of
people and making them aware of TB. Subsequently, Mr. Siddaraju & Mr. Lawrence of PSI
staged “TB Mela” at the same venue.
8) Orientation Programme on TB:
An orientation programme on TB was jointly organised by KSTBA, SDS TRC & RGICD,
LWSTBC, PSI and CHAI for the nursing students of Victoria Nursing College, Bangalore on
at SDS TRC & RGICD, Hosur Road, Near NIMHANS, Bangalore – 29 on 21st February 2012
between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm

Training Specialist, PSI, Mr. K. Srikanth, Programme Manager, PSI, were guests who talked
during the program.
The programme was started by 11.00 am with a prayer and lighting of the lamp. A student of
the Victoria Nursing College welcomed. Mr. Srikanth, introduced the “BALGUM BOY”
advertisement, they plan to telecast and broadcast under the AKSHAYA project. Dr. Sadana
stressed on the theme “I am stopping TB in my Life time” and administered “Stop TB oath”
to all the participants. Dr. S. S. Revadi talked on RNTCP and scientific facts on TB. Mr.
Basavaraju from The Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI) talked on the spreading &
controlling of TB. Dr. Shashidhar Buggi spoke on the role of Nursing Students in RNTCP. An
interaction between the doctors and the students made the programme lively and meaningful.
More than 50 Nursing Students of Victoria Nursing College, Staff of KSTBA & SDS TRC &
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases participated in the programme. Pamphlets were
distributed to all the participants and banners & stickers were displayed in the seminar hall.
9) Public Meeting (Mela on TB)
A Mela on TB programme was jointly organised by Karnataka State TB Association
& Population Services International in front of the Victoria Hospital, K R Road, Bangalore-2
on 21st of February 2012 between 3.00 pm and 5 pm.
Mr. Sidda Raju and Mr. Lawrence from PSI & Mr. Ravindra Shenoy took active part
in this programme. A free game show was conducted in the beginning to attract crowds. Once
a good number of people assembled, Mr. Lawrence started conveying the important and key
messages on TB with the help of FLIP CHARTS. Mr. Sidda Raju and Mr. Ravindra Shenoy
went around, distributing the pamphlets to the members of the public. Several people asked
questions and clarified their doubts. Mr. Sidda Raju and Mr. Ravindra Shenoy answered them
satisfactorily.
10) Film show for school going children:
School students have been one of the important target groups for health awareness. A
film show was organized for the students of Government Primary School, Irannanagudde,
Girinagar, Bangalore in collaboration with Indian Development Foundation, PSI & Sandeep
Seva Nilayam.
During this programme Mr. Ravindra Shenoy spoke on the facts on TB. Mr. Vincent
Samuel from IDF talked on the role of the students in stopping TB. Mr. Sidda Raju from PSI
asked a few questions to assess the understanding of the students. Several students raised their
doubts and got clarified. More than 300 students & good number of teachers got benefited
from the programmes. Pamphlets were distributed to all the participants.
11) CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) PROGRAMME:
Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on RNTCP was jointly organised
by Karnataka State TB Association and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on 23-02-12
between 11.00 am to 1.00 am at Dr .B. R. Ambedkar Medical College, Kadugondanahalli,

Dr. Bhakthavatchalam welcomed the participants and briefed on RNTCP activities held at Dr.
B. R. Ambedkar Medical College. Dr. T. Prabhu presided over the function.
Dr. Balaji Naik spoke on “Major Impact on TB”, “Global Target for TB Control”,
“STOP-TB STRATERGY-2009, “RNTCP’-objectives, RNTCP-Algorithm and HIV & TB in India through Power Point Presentation.
Dr. S. M. Sadana explained the activities of PSI and its active participation in RNTCP.
In her speech she administered an oath to “STOP TB IN MY LIFE TIME”. A short
advertisement on TB, “BALGAM BOY” was shown.
More than 200 medical & Para medical personnel, staff of KSTBA, IDF and PSI
participated in the programme. Banners and Stickers were displayed in the seminar hall. A
Few IEC materials were distributed to all the participants.
The programme was concluded with a Vote of thanks by Dr. Kamarunnisa. Lunch was
organized by the BBMP and KSTBA.
