Today’s story, about the rich man who built new barns to store riches for a future when he could “eat, drink and have a good time,” is not only a sharp reminder that we can pile up as much wealth as we like but it won’t prevent sudden death. Luke’s real concern is to teach us to desire to serve God with what we have, rather than just keep it all for ourselves; to seek not just to make ourselves rich but rich in the sight of God. Parents constantly use their income for others – feeding and clothing their children, for instance… but I have the feeling there might be many young people who are making good money who don’t necessarily feel that their first concern should be to give to charity before going out shopping; but a Christian’s first thought should always be for others. It’s a lesson we need to learn young so that we grow into generous, open-hearted people - not narrow, selfish ones. As Matthew puts it, very simply, “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” A heart too attached to cold, hard cash runs the risk of becoming cold and hard.

A PARISH BOOK GROUP Fr Peter Marden would like to set up a book group. The suggestion is that

members agree to meet regularly having read a book already chosen & discuss the book. Members choose a book in turn & would need to present the book to the group at the beginning of the meeting; the choice of book would be up to each member. Books can be obtained second hand&/or by

arrangement with the Taunton Library. If you are interested please pass your name and phone number on to the Parish Office. Fr Peter will contact you to

set up a first meeting in September to discuss & arrange a time of day, frequency & where the group will meet. Its an enjoyable way of reading those

books you have always meant to read and in good company.
