No Junior Fair hogs can stay for

Muskingum Livestock trucks
after the sale.
Hog Shaving
Hog shaving/grooming (as taken
from the fair book) – no “slick
clipping or body shaving of market
hogs except on the ears, tails and
underline.” Slick clipping or body
shaving is defined as less than ½”
length of hair. Only water is
permitted to be sprayed on hogs on
show days.
All hogs will have their hair
measured prior to market hog
weigh-in on Tuesday morning of
the fair. Any hog with hair below
½” will be disqualified and sent
home. All hogs in the final drive
for a weight division will also have
their hair measured prior to entering
the show arena. Any hog with hair
below ½” will be disqualified. Any
disqualified hog will be required to
stay on the grounds, but will not be
permitted to sell in the Junior Fair
Livestock Sale.
Swine Influenza
Pigs can be infected with swine
influenza viruses that are different
from human flu viruses. Swine flu
viruses spread among pigs and—
while rare—can spread from pigs to
people too. The CDC has a great
fact sheet with recommendations
for exhibitors related to swine and
human health. View the fact sheet:
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/swinef
lu/fair_exhibitor_factsheet.pdf
Preventative Health Measures
Don’t eat or drink or put
anything in your mouth in the
pig barn and show arena.
Don’t take toys, pacifiers, cups,
bottles, strollers, or similar
items into the pig barn and
show arenas.
Wash your hands often with
soap and running water before
and after exposure to pigs.
If soap and water are not
available, use an alcohol-based
hand rub.
If you are sick with flu-like
illness, stay home to avoid
spreading your illness.
Cash and ribbon awards for first,
second and third place in each class.
Four age group classes (ages as of
Jan. 1, 2017):
Cloverbuds - (K-2 grade)
Junior - 8 to 10 years old
Intermediate - 11 to 14 year
olds
Senior - 15 to 18 year olds
Rabbit Reminders
Below are some reminders from the
4-H Rabbit Committee for rabbit
exhibitors at the fair.
Check-in for all rabbits is
Saturday, August 11 from 8:00
a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Auction Basket Donations: We
need $5-$10 from each club to
purchase the items for the
auction basket. This is the main
fundraiser of the committee and
we rely on donations to make it
successful.
Risers are available for $5/each
- You can bring your own and
they are required in every pen.
Monies provide a pizza party at
the end of the week. (We do run
out, so come early).
Crocks are provided free of
charge.
Exhibitors need a white
jacket/shirt during the show.
Tack boxes are acceptable but
MUST fit under the pens. They
cannot be in the aisle. (Under
18 inches tall)
Exhibitors must supply their
own shavings.
Swine Reminders
The Livestock Committee would
like to make sure all swine
exhibitors know the following prior

Junior Fair Livestock Information
make a purchase, etc. Members
should not ask the business or
individual to purchase their own
animal, but to invite them to
support the sales.
Facility Fund – The Junior Fair
Livestock Sale Committee
maintains a facility fund with the
intention of using that money to
help maintain and/or upgrade
facilities used by steer, lamb and
hog exhibitors at the fair. With this
in mind, an additional $5.00 per
seller is deducted from the sale
check. The fund is to help improve
the facilities that are there for
members to use.
Hog, Goat & Lamb Sales –
Remember the market goat, hog
and lamb shows are “terminal”,
meaning ALL market goats, hogs
and lambs must go directly to
slaughter from the fair. This
includes any goat, hog or lamb not
in the regular sale. The terminal
show status is recommended by the
Ohio Department of Agriculture in
an effort to prevent outbreak of
diseases. Market animals not going
through the fair auction need to
complete a card (available in the
Junior Fair Office) indicating they
need their animal to be marketed.
Muskingum Livestock Sales will
handle the marketing of all the
Junior Fair steers, goats, lambs and
hogs.
Sale Sheets will be posted on
Muskingum Livestock’s Facebook
page and website
(muskingumlivestock.com) as the
become available.
Announcements will not be made
during the sale by auctioneers for
the youth selling. If you want to
donate a portion of their sale check
to a specific person or cause, you
may do so on your own time.
Unfortunately, with the large
number of youth selling, there is
just not the time permitted to stop
and make special announcements
for individual youth.
Livestock Sale
Information
Buyer Thank You Signs
All youth are encouraged hang
thank you signs for 2017 buyers.
Blank signs will be available during
barn meetings.
Sales – Exhibitors may sell only
one lot of livestock in the animal
livestock sales or Bossy’s Jug. The
exception to this is that all overall
Grand and Reserve Grand
Champions must sell.
Pictures – Photographs will be
taken of members and their animals
to present to the buyer immediately
after selling. This is a way to say
“thank you” for their support.
Sale Buyer Contacts – In order to
have successful sales, it is helpful
for prospective buyers to know
about the sales. Members should
contact potential buyers with
information about when the sales
are, how a person/business can

2018 4-H Camp Counselors and Adult Volunteers
Our camping program’s success is not possible without a committed group of teen counselors (4-H age 14-18) and
adult volunteers. Our camping year starts with the availability of the camp counselor application in late October
(November 15 deadline). While previous counselors only need to complete the application to be considered, new
counselor candidates must attend Camp Counselor Selection Night, where they participate in a variety of activities to
assess their counseling skills. It is a very competitive process – there are always more applicants than spots available.
Serving as a part of our camp team is a tremendous time commitment, as meetings start in December and continue
through the end of June. During that time, counselors and staff attend 20+ hours of meetings to be trained for their
role and to plan numerous aspects of our camp. First-time counselors are also required to attend an overnight
workshop at 4-H Camp Ohio. A HUGE thanks goes out to our 2018 camp team for their hard work!
