The Monroe County 4‐H Therapeu c Riding Program will be honored at the Ohio 4‐H Conference to be held March 14 at the Columbus Conven on Center. The group will receive one of four State Community Service Awards. The award is being presented for their work to provide horse rides to children and adults with disabili es in Monroe County. It is rare to be able to merge a hobby and a passion together with a community service project. But, the Monroe County 4‐H Therapeu c Riding Program has done just that combining their love for horses with a therapeu c horseback riding program designed to help those with mental and physical disabili es. The Monroe County 4‐H Therapeu c Riding Program started in 2013 with the 4‐H Horse Whisperer’s Club offering horse rides to children and adults with disabili es in Monroe County. The club hosted their first event with a one‐day riding event for MACO (Monroe County Developmental Disability) students in 2013. For 2014 the program expanded to include all disabled students and adults living in Monroe County. Currently nine adult 4‐H volunteers operate the program as well as five older youth. The volunteers provide safe horse rides as riders stop at seven challenging
tac le/sensory sta ons. Volunteers lead the horses and help as side walkers. The youth are normally assigned to one of the tac le/sensory sta ons where they help the riders perform a variety of tasks while the rider stays on the horse in the saddle, including bean bag toss, a ring toss, and a basketball shoo ng sta on. The program has received an Ohio 4‐H Mini Grant courtesy of the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Associa on to purchase a horse drawn wheelchair accessible cart. The cart will be purchased in 2015 and allow students/adults to par cipate in the program that are too disabled to be put upon a horse. The program has also been helped by dona ons, including a custom‐made basketball hoop and base made by the Swiss Hills Career Center welding class.

Blue Tagged Lambs & Goats – BEWARE! Lambs and goats tagged with blue scrapie tags are confined to slaughter‐only channels and cannot be used as 4‐H project animals or exhibited at the fair. Do NOT purchase sheep and goats with the blue slaughter‐only/meat scrapie tags as poten al 4‐H projects. Be aware that, in order to exhibit ewes or rams (lambs and adults) purchased at a livestock market, the animals must have arrived with an owner statement and official ID other than a blue “slaughter‐only”/”meat” scrapie tag. Blue tagged animals CANNOT be used as projects or exhibited at the Fair! And, remember: it is unlawful to remove or tamper with official iden fica on.
Required Scrapie Tag for Lambs & Goats Scrapies is a fatal degenera ve disease affec ng the central nervous system of sheep and goats. The United States Department of Agriculture’s goal is to eradicate this fatal disease by tracking infected animals back to their flocks of origin of birth. An USDA scrapie ID tag will provide the informa on needed to track an infected animal. All lambs and goats a ending the 2013 Monroe County Junior Fair will be required to have a USDA scrapie ID tag or ta oo. If you are planning to purchase lambs or goats from a producer make sure the producer’s USDA scrapie ID tag has been placed in the animal’s ear before you leave their facility. It is the breeders’ responsibility to make sure the USDA scrapie ID tags are in the animal. It is your responsibility as an exhibitor to make sure they already have a scrapies tag. ** If a breeder needs informa on about how to get scrapies tags, they can contact the Extension Office for the informa on.**

Quality Assurance Test-out Option Monroe County will offer the test‐out op on again this year provided by Ohio Department of Agriculture. 4‐H members can “test‐out” of their annual QA session and be exempt from QA training for the up‐coming years. Youth ages 12 and up (as of Jan.1) can opt to take a test rather than going through the QA session. Two versions are available: a large animal (including beef, sheep, swine, dairy and goats) and a small animal (including poultry and rabbits) as well as for two age groups: 12‐14 yrs old and 15‐18 yrs old. You will need to have knowledge of QA principles and general animal sciences. If a 12‐14 yr. old takes the test and passes, they are exempt from QA un l they are 15 yrs. old. If a 15‐18 yr. old takes the test and passes, they no longer have to a end a QA session each year. Youth interested in the “test‐out” op on will take a 50 ques on, mul ple‐choice test. The passing grade is 70% (35 out of 50 correct answers). If a youth fails the test, then the youth must a end a regular QA program and return next year to try the test again. Members wishing to take the Ohio Quality Assurance test must register with the Extension Office prior to the test dates. Tests will be administered on all four dates.
