(Where Are The Students?)
Hello from all of us in Athens. Hope all of you are enjoying your summerand are getting some much deserved vacation time.
One person who is getting some much deserved relaxation is Thomas Dunlap, who decided to retire as of June 30th. Tom served Ohio University for over twodecades in a variety of capacities, including Assistant and then Associate Dean of ourCollege. And, from its earliest beginnings, Tom was a major factor in the growth andsuccess of Communication Systems Management.
Tom refused to let anyone have a formal reception for him or to let anyonemake a big fuss about his retirement. We should all, however, make a big fuss abouthis many contributions to the School. Tom served as internship coordinator for over 6years. He worked constantly to find new internship sponsors, to find the best fitbetween student and company, and to encourage students to make the most of theirinternship opportunities.
Tom also taught COMT 214 (formerly 100); data communication, and thesenior seminar. In all of his classes, he worked hard to get students to think critically,to approach the world realistically, and to do their best. Tom was a great friend andasset to this program. His integrity, good sense, dry humor, and concern for studentswill be greatly missed.
Even though he doesn’t want any public displays, Tom Dunlap would valueyour private good wishes. His address is listed later in this WATSLINE if you want tocontact him.
On a happier note, we will be joined in the fall by two new faculty member:Trevor Roycroft, who will be teaching policy and regulatory issues, andVaradharajan Sridhar, who will be teaching data and new technologies. (Detailsfollow.) And the rest of us continue to work and plan. Dennis Fouty passed hiscomprehensive exams (congratulations, Dennis) and now is heavily involved in writinghis thesis. His topic deals with the use of information technologies for education inAfrica (great topic). Hans Kruse is spending the summer working for NASA (moredetails follow). Tony Mele is solidifying plans to wire our two lab locations (lots ofcrawling around in tunnels). Phyllis Bernt co-authored a study on universal telephoneservice for the Wissenschaftliches Institute fur Kommunikationsdienste in Germany.
We all look forward to another productive year, and to hearing from all of youalumni ct there. Keep in tor

MCI donates $132,000 in communications equipment to universityby RACHEL PLANISEKfor the INSIDER
One phone company hasmore than telephone services in itsagenda.
MCI TelecommunicationsCorp. donated nearly $132,000 infiber optic and testing equipment toOUin a presentation late last month.
The lab opened in 1990 whenMCI donated $350,000 in equipmentthat simulates a long-distance telephone terminal environment, saidPhyllis Bernt, School of Comm unications Systems Management director. The testing equipment, totalling
$73,230, will be installed in the MCICommunication Laboratory located onWest Union Street.
Communications SystemsManagement faculty members Hans’Kruse and Tony Mele currently areusing the previously donated equipment to work on a satellite project forNASA and Huntington Bank.
“The 1990 donatIon enablesstudents and faculty to engage in amore in-depth understanding of thetechnology,” Mele said.
MCI Manager of MediaRelations Ed Bergstraesser said thetesting equipment will provide hands-on training for Communications
Systems Management students intesting communication frequenciesand the quality of long-distancetelephone circuits. In 1993, MCIranked as the second-largest providerof long-distance services in thecountry, just behind AT&T.
The donated fiber optic cablewill be used for video surveillancethat is part of the university’s WideArea Network communication dataservice at The Ridges, Bergstraessersaid.
The system”provides forelectronic mail and connections toInterNet, the international form ofelectronic mail, said Bill Estep,
assistant director of University NewsServices and Periodicals.
“The equipment is used inthe labs so students have an opportunity to test and get a sense of howvarious circuits function,” Bernt said,Undergraduates usually are not ableto use this type of equipment because programs of this kind are sorare, she said.
Bernt also said MCI isinvolved with OU because of the largenumber of OU alumni who work forthe company.
OU is the only school in Ohioinvolved with MCI in a program of thiskind, Bergstraesser said.
