CURRENT ISSUESIN WATER SUPPLY AND DRAINAGE
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
It has become a tradition that by the end of the year the Croatian water supply and sewage association organizes a central professional and business Conference with international participation under the title
th thThis year's Conference will take place from the 24 – 28 October 2012 in the town of Bol on the island of Brač. This will provide us with a new opportunity to have at one place the experts from the area of water management, i.e. utility sector which covers the segment of water supply, drainage and waste water treatment. A constant increase in the number of participants and companies, along with a significant number of participants from abroad, shows that the interest for this Conference is becoming greater year by year. We can confidently say that it represents the leading event in the segment of water supply and drainage in this part of Europe.
As Croatia has completed its negotiations for accession to the European Union, and the preparations for accession are in full swing in all segments of society, this is reflected in the water management and utility sector as well. We witnessed major changes in legislation which regulates this area, with a direct impact on the issues of water supply, drainage and waste water treatment. However, this process is not yet complete. There are still many changes and adaptations to be made, which will directly influence the organization and ways of conducting business in the companies involved in the above activities. Consequently, and in view of the fact that there are still a number of unknowns and undefined areas in the new legislation, through the work of this Conference we will try to analyze in more detail the current state and possibilities of implementation of sub-legal acts which are currently in force and possibly define their necessary amendments.
The basic topics of this year's Conference which will form its backbone, not limiting, however, the presentation of other topics will be the following:
1. Sub-legal acts which regulate the ways of conducting business in the segment of water supply, drainage and waste water treatment
The presentations under this topic will give a presentation of the state and possibilities of implementation of the regulations, i.e. highlight potential needs for their changes and adaptations. In such a way, we may gain a significant source of information for further activities aiming at their amendments.
2. Issues and experiences in water protection with a special stress on the protection of water intended for human consumption and the implementation of the Decision on Zones of Sanitary Protection of Water Sources
Professional presentations related to this topic will show the professional public the experiences, i.e. positive and negative examples in practice, with the overall aim of protection the water sources as a whole. The presentations from countries which are already members of the EU will be of particular interest, as they can shed the light on the path we still have to tread as future members.
3. Managing losses in water supply with the application of the GIS system
Professional presentations on this topic will elucidate the possibility of the use of the GIS system in water supply, which, along with a telemetric supervision and management, represents the basis for an efficient implementation of broader and more complex activities on the reduction of water losses.
4. Facilities for waste water treatment – various aspects of planning, construction and management
This topic foresees the presentation of experiences from a broader area of issues in waste water treatment.
We believe that the above topics will interest you, and we therefore invite you to participate in the work of the Conference in order to jointly contribute to the progress and adaptation to new conditions of doing business and new behaviour which we face as future full-fledged members of the EU.
