MISSION STATEMENT
The Oro Agricultural Society is a group of dedicated volunteers
working to promote an understanding of the agricultural
heritage of Oro-Medonte, as well as providing opportunities for
recognition of the talents and skills of members of our local
communities, through participation in the Oro World’s Fair.
3
As President of the Oro Agricultural Society, and on behalf of the
Directors and Committee Members, it is my pleasure to present the Program
and Official Price List for the 164th Annual ORO WORLD’S FAIR, being
held on Sept 16 & 17, 2016.
ORO WORLD’S FAIR is a very special event to many in our
community. Our primary goal is the education about agriculture and rural
life, but we also want to entertain you and have fun! This would not be
possible without the countless hours of work from our dedicated volunteers,
as well as the financial support from our local community businesses and
individuals. Their generosity is greatly beneficial to the Oro Agricultural
Society.
I welcome you to this year’s 164th ORO WORLD’S FAIR and hope
you will make memories that will last a lifetime.

Short Story of Oro Fair
1852-2010 The First Oro Fair was held at Rix’s Tavern at the NW corner lot 15, Con 1. It
was held in different taverns before settling at the township hall in 1869. In
1868 the Council acquired land, and the Township hall was built on the present
location. Membership fees, a small legislative grant, plus the odd donation
financed the Agricultural Society. In 1877, looking for new areas of revenue
they placed a collection box at the gate and by sunset it contained the sum of
$2.25. This was the forerunner of the first admission fee that increased to
$61.75 by 1884. In 1886 the directors decided to omit the prize for the best
yoke of oxen and add more horse prizes, marking the end of another era. In
1914 they decided to build a new building to display the fruits that were the
product of the early pioneer orchards and grain from the fields of Oro. The shed
20’ x 40’ was built east of the hall, when the old shed, built in 1868 was torn
down. This building was also used for the school fair, and in 1954 was moved
to its present location at the north of the grounds and an annex of the same size
added to the west end. In 1920 an open horse shed 16’ x 100’ was built near the
centre of the race track and provided much needed protection for the horses on
hot or rainy days. Needing repairs, it was removed in 1966.
The Oro School Fair, sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, began as a
separate event in 1915 and continued until 1939, when it was withdrawn. In
1948 it started in conjunction with the Oro Fair on the same day and has
continued until the present, adding much to the senior fair. In 1962 a shed was
purchased and rebuilt on land acquired by the society from the Proper farm at
the north of the grounds, and a lean-to added.
1952 the 100th anniversary of Oro Fair was duly celebrated when the Hon. Leslie
Frost, then Premier of Ontario, led a procession of many floats depicting the
past, to officially open the 100th Oro Fair.
In the early years, the Tug-of-war teams and the oxen pulling competition
provided much entertainment and competition. This gradually died out, and in
the past few years we have the Tractor Pull, which has provided a new interest.
In 1974 the one-day midweek fair changed to a two-day weekend event. The
beef draw also started. In 1978 harness racing discontinued, and we now have
the Tractor Pull, Demolition Derby, ATV Pull and still have the talent show.
In 1998 13.9 acres was purchased from an adjoining property, which is used for
parking and expanding the fair. Prior to that, two new display buildings were
erected. In 2009 a new Food booth and Secretary-Treasurer office were added.
Through the years dedicated volunteers and directors have made Oro World’s
