Christmas 2016 Memories begin today Perhaps the most common memory of Christmas is the moment when the Nativity set is assembled and the minia-ture scene so central to our Faith is present right before our very eyes. Nativity scenes are plentiful this time of year and they come in all shapes and sizes; some extremely or-nate and others very simple. Some are very old and part of the legacy of family treasures, while some are quite new to our collection of Christmas decorations. Some remind us of our childhood, others are new to young families and the children who begin to change and expand the family one life at a time. St. Francis of Assisi is credited for the Christmas Nativ-ity scene, but I suspect when he constructed the first scene of the Christmas event in the town of Greccio, Italy, he would never had anticipated the need and the popularity it would gain throughout the world. It started simply. He wanted to celebrate Christmas in a new way by re-creating the stable of Bethlehem. He would have a real ox and donkey there, and they would celebrate Mass outside the cave with a bare rock for an altar. Francis, who was a deacon, would read the Gospel and preach to the brothers and the townspeople of Greccio whom the broth-ers would invite to Midnight Mass. In the heart of night the townspeople crossed from Grec-cio to the hermitage carrying lighted candles and singing Christmas songs. They were amazed at the scene before them, the live Christmas crib that made them see the pov-erty and humility of God. There was no baby lying on the straw because Francis knew that the one to be born in the Mass was He who was born in Bethlehem. But when he finished preaching, he turned to the crèche and saw a little baby lying on the stone altar, the Little Word of God made flesh; and he took it in his arms. He didn’t know if the peo-ple saw what he held, but they would understand the panto-mime, the gesture of reaching down to the altar and lifting something tenderly to his heart. The people remained after the Mass and prayed in the makeshift stable. And Francis gave thanks and praised God that indeed this was a new birth of Christ, the Baby and Little Lamb of God. Will you and I imagine ourselves holding and cradling the Christ child in our arms and hearts this year? Imag-ine reaching down and ever so gently, taking the new born babe in our arms and holding him so carefully and respect-fully. Isn’t that really what our Christmas celebrations are all about? At the very least, let us pause for a moment and realize that the very reason for all we do at this time of year, happens only because God’s love, made manifest, is our greatest gift to each of us. We are truly blessed! It is my pleasure to have this opportunity to wish all of
you a blessed Christmas today and throughout the entire Christmas season. It will be my hope for each of you that, beginning today, your memories of Christmas 2016 will be enjoyable and the blessings of the Christ Child be with each of you.
Fr. Dave

Stewardship Thought For unto us is born this day a Savior! In response to so great a love, only the gift of my whole self will do. You have given us Yourself, dear Lord; in love and thanksgiving, I commit myself afresh to you.• Christian stewardship trains us to become aware that God is the ultimate giver of the gifts we have. Our gift to God should be “from the top” — not what may be left over.• You need not redo your entire Will to make a provision for a charitable bequest to your parish. Simply prepare a Codicil (a written change or addition), have it witnessed and attached to your Will. Add a gift to your parish in your Will.
Vocation View— Rejoice! A child is born to us. This Prince of Peace is the great light. Go and share your joy with others. (Isaiah 9:1-6)
