3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27th, 2013
Message from Our Pastor
My Dear Family of Our Lady of Lourdes,
We just finished Christmas and this year Lent is already coming
up! Ash Wednesday is the 13th, the Wednesday following the Feast of
Our Lady of Lourdes. We will talk more about our plans for a beautiful
celebration of our feast day next week but I would like to follow up on
last week’s letter from the Bishops of Florida with what we hope will
become a regular part of our Lenten journey: 40 Days for Life.
Last Lent was the first time we participated as a parish in 40
Days for Life. If you remember, we offered prayer and sacrifice in
reparation for our society’s embrace of a culture of death and in
supplication for a conversion of heart and a renewal of life among us.
As I have mentioned a number of times, I am convinced that the
violence that grips us is fed by the nation’s embrace of the violence
of abortion as acceptable and the lack of respect for the dignity of every
human life. President Obama speaks often these days about the need to
protect the most defenseless among us. We must help him see that the
most defenseless among us include those in their mother’s womb.
Along with offering personal prayer and sacrifice, 40 Days for
Life also includes a peaceful and prayerful presence throughout Lent in
front of the abortion clinic closest to us, on 117th Avenue. Last year we
covered Mondays from 7 am to 7 pm and the other parishes of Miami
covered the rest of the week. We had such a strong and faithful presence
that the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Miami has asked us to
provide a more visible presence by moving our day to Tuesday.
As we approach Lent, the members of Our Lady of Lourdes
Respect Life Committee will be at the entrance of the church so that we
can sign up to cover an hour and so make this a part of our Lenten
journey as a parish family. I would ask that if possible everyone sign up
for one hour a week. If that is not possible, please choose at least one
hour for this Lent to join us.
Next week we will have the full schedule of Lenten Services in
the bulletin and on the website for easy reference, along with the schedule
for the celebrations of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. God bless.
Sincerely,
Msgr. Schwanger

Y si no
Sinceramente,
Msgr. Schwanger

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Snippets from the Catechism: The Gospel of Luke
Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
In the gospel reading today, Jesus proclaims the fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus is the one who is anointed to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom for the op-pressed, and a year acceptable to the Lord. Paragraph 695 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) points to this reading as it teaches that “Jesus is God’s Anointed in a unique way; the hu-manity the Son assumed was entirely anointed by the Holy Spirit.” The mis-sion of Jesus is the very mission of God. Jesus proclaims the passage from Isaiah as his own (see CCC paragraph 714). While Jesus comes for all man-kind, there is a special connection to those most in need of him – the poor, the blind, and the captive.
Again, the CCC uses this passage and others as the basis of our understanding that the Kingdom of God belongs to the poor and lowly (see CCC paragraph 544). In teaching about our call to serve the poor, paragraph 2443 of the CCC makes it clear that when “’the poor have the good news preached to them,” it is the sign of Christ’s presence.'
